    Whisky .com reviews the Lagavulin 8 years. The age of 8 years recalls an important milestone in the history of distillery. Around 1880 the famous whisky journalist Alfred Barnard tasted an 8-year-old Lagavulin during his visit.
    The nose:
    Smoke, citrus, bonfire, sea notes, malt
    The taste:
    Smoke
    The finish:
    Long with smoke

    The first thing I do when I want a whisky, is find Horst's review. I don't think tasting is a God given gift, but something that develops - and what a teacher. Thanks Horst.

    I was surprised how much I liked this one. It's quite different than the 16, but is pleasant in its own way. I liked the crisp, bright smokiness it offers, along with various spicy notes and a subtle sweetness. It reminds me somewhat of the Ardbeg 10 which is one of my favorites so perhaps I'm biased towards this type of scotch. And it is a nice value as well.

    This is a good review. Lagavulin is one of my favourite Islay single malts. Particularly the 16, the 8 is also enjoyable. This review is spot on. Kudos!!!

    I now prefer the 8 over the 16.
    Probably the higher ABV helps

    Great review! Loved it.
    And I tried it, I will not lie, it's unbelievably-smooth. In fact, I thought an 8-year old would be "rough and young", but this one showed NONE of that. Believe me, I was suprised by how smooth it is for a 48%. I believe the distillation has been very un-rushed, thus the smoothness! I loved it a lot personally. I rate 8.5/10.

    Thank you sir... That was a very good review. I just bought the 8 year old... I did not like it as much either.
    I will go back to the 16 year old, even though it cost 2x as much in BevMo.

    Is there another 8 yo from Laga on the market or is every 8yo a kind of successor to the original 200th anniversary 8yo? I just bought a bottle of 8yo without the 1816-2016 label on it. Are they the same? Are only the bottles from 2016 the anniversary ones or do they taste the same as the non-anniversary ones?

    Ahh, I share your preference of the 16 over the 12 and 8. For my next Lagavulin, the DE will be on my radar.

    After more than a year and half, this bottle is still available in my fav bottle shop. Priced exactly same as 16 yr old. Just get it for the heck of collection? if it is truly that limited?

      @jasoncoates1835 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a half dozen bottles here in town too, on the shelves collecting dust next to the 16s that sell regularly. I don't think this one is going to help the retirement plan much as a collectible.

    Now I've tried the 8yr, and I really like it.
    Normally I prefer the 16yr, and as Horst says thats more different flavours.
    But this one isn't that bad.

    With a 48 should you add a drop of water or only over 50%?

    • @Armstrong_Dicksmasher
      @Armstrong_Dicksmasher 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find ABV doesn't affect that very much. I've had whiskies above and below 50% respond either way to water, and so whether or not to add any seems to be a bottle-to-bottle decision.
      Try both, and pick whichever you like best.

    • @dallasl3688
      @dallasl3688 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both good pieces of advice. Always try it neat first. I add up to 4 drops of water (preferably distilled, but at least filtered) to a dram depending on the Scotch. Some whiskeys improve with a few drops, some degrade. You'll just have to experiment and possibly ruin a glass in the process.

    • @KillianDefaoite
      @KillianDefaoite 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say have a small sip with no water, and then add water one drop at a time, seriously. Even a tiny amount of water can really open up the flavors well.

  • @michaelkavanagh5947
    @michaelkavanagh5947 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Of the three ard beg, Laphroaig and lagavulin…I think lagavulin is the freshest. The 8 is bourbon cask they don’t say but no sherry tones. No fruit. Fresh, smoke, sea, you can taste the malt and peat as smoke is toned down. Soft nose. The three of these are equal in quality. Just different. How they keep it so gentle at 48 I don’t know. This is mouth wash burn territory over 50 for me. Takes skill to run a high abv.

  • @lachaineduwhisky
    @lachaineduwhisky 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Please Horst, don't encourage speculation on that bottle ! It's a "simple" but excellent dram to be enjoyed now. Definitely on the distillate side, but according to me, it's a tribute to the distillery caracter. It's not all about oak.

      @@slunkdowns22 Well probably the same as now lol. It's available everywhere. But you know that. Also since it's available everywhere in some areas the 16years old is much higher in price now than before. At least here.
      Also I prefer Ardbeg over Lagavulin.

    You guys swish that Islay Scotch around like it's freaking mouthwash....it's not, it's a drink. Very inappropriate mouth noises for God's sake nonetheless. Other than that, great review.

  • @lazyitus

    I wanted to like it. I TRIED to like it. But it just tastes like liquefied campfire ashes to me. I can't taste anything but smoke. For me, unpeated scotch is where it's at. (please forgive me Ron Swanson!)

      Give ur tastebuds some time, u might grow on the smoke once u try whiskies that have little smoke in the back of the palate like highland park or johnnie walker green label. I remember There was a time I didn't like smoke myself. And now It is my go to scotch. Cheers

      +Richard Barbat As Mr. Luning reads from the box at about 04:56, this whisky is artificially coloured. Why Lagavulin felt the need to do so with such a light whisky is more than I can understand.

      don't forget the nagging doubt the members of the board had about chill-filtration being worthwhile in this offering. they quickly realized they were owned by Diageo and decided to strip it of intrinsic quality just in case some noob got scared when his whisky turned cloudy after adding an ice cube.

  • @rolfgris5931

    Cut the crap with your PPM speculations please. The 16 year old with higher PPM is no longer available since the last time they used that malt is 1991 or 1993. I guarantee you that it is the same new make as always but the whisky is different, of course. And the ABV, you seriuosly believe they chose 48% to compete with ardbeg and laphroaig?

    • @grapesodapopinski571
      @grapesodapopinski571 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michel Barréra I think they decided on 48% because it’s delicious at 48%. If you add water it loses sweetness.
