I think Ren was feeling the same about his music career when he wrote this (obviously penned before "Hi Ren" blew up the whole internet!). I read the song as Ren reflecting on the physical and mental health issues that have held back his career; acutely aware of time slipping by; thoughts of ending it all, but instead committing to throwing everything into his career and his art "like Shaquille O'Neal with aggression" (nice simile for not holding anything back, BTW). Awesome song.

Ren i believe is influenced by ska which is heavily influenced by reggae and dance hall music of the late 70s early 80s in uk which in turn propagated uk hip hop uk garage and jungle through the late 80s and 90s also when i listen through his library i hear other influences ranging from jazz to house from northern soul to classic rock , which i think makes ren so unlike any other artist out there his willingness to appreciate music as a whole and take it for a ride!

My neuropathy came after a spinal tumor surgery, I've had broken bones, fractures, and head trauma and none of those campare to the pain of nerve damage, it's weird because parts of my feet I can't feel at all and thr parts I can feel are hyper sensitive, feels like those parts of your body are being burned, and it doesn't stop. Neuropathy is pure hell. I have it in my feet and legs. It's a sensation of numbness, like when you fall asleep on your arm hard, where it's just completely dead when you wake up, then the feeling starts coming back, and you have the pins and needles feeling, and then it can feel like your skin is burning. Eventually you start getting full feeling and your arm goes back to normal... With neuropathy, you just have the numbness, and the burning, 24/7. On a good day, my pain level is at a 6/10. And i usually compare it to standing in a bed of fire ants, and just letting them eat at you. And now that i have it, i understand why my grandpa was always so damn grumpy.😅
Time does everything. It takes time to make your dinner. It takes time for you to walk the street you live on. Time doesn’t leave. You run out of it….🤷🏻♂️🏴

Ren has a lot of references to god, or the divine in his work. He often seems to look to the heavens and implore for help or for evidence of the divine. He says he doesn't subscribe to one particular religion but he does spend a remarkable amount of energy thinking/writing about it. My interpretation of the heretic/heathen line is about his feeling like he's lost chances even though he knows he has the skills to be successful, but I feel hopeful for him that he's prepared to even go to hell to fight for himself. One of his skills seems to be to create conversations about god/gods/universal energy and leaves just enough space for each individual's beliefs and interpretation.
