Can You Beat Borderlands 2 with Only the Starter Pistol?

- My First Gun may not be a true statement of a mission title anymore due to DLC and updates, but it was true to me. At least in terms of Borderlands titles. I'm far from the first to try beating the game with the useless hunk of junk that is the Basic Repeater, but I can't say that I've seen someone else who dared ask such a stupid question in a more pure form.
In case you're wondering, yes. This is run number three in the ongoing saga of physically painful challenge runs. I think I need to stop ticking that counter up for my own health. But of course... the challenge must go on.

this is space fantasy with magic powers now showing up, several of those guns are high tech magic like the throw to explode reload
Who's to say the bullets are lead... or maybe the higher damages are more exotic metals
I miss the days where people would use the basic repeater with zero to one-shot hyperious the invincible
I never really got into doing raid bosses, personally. Most of the folks that I've known that got involved in the series just kinda migrated away from them outside of janky farming like the Gee door kill.
Now people have evolved to using two Maya's with antagonist shields and stacked broken kill skills to achieve same effect with any boss you can think of🤣
@@SpuddyCubeI have pretty much never killed a raid boss solo without the use of glitches (other than bore on hyperius) and to be honest I'd rather have it be that you need a crazy setup to deal with the boss otherwise it doesn't work because if it worked differently it would be a huge pain in the ass to farm the raid bosses... I'm looking at you haderax.

It was a tough fought battle... I had to walk a short distance without dying, but it was ultimately Handsome Jack's downfall.

My immediate first thought: Yeah probably with some nice amp shields
When you said no offensive shields: Oh.... well this really IS gonna suck
Was about to think that. Offensive shield usage (especially the Bee) would've helped massively IMO.
When you said put "the Invincible" after every enemies name my brain first thought of "normal ass psycho the Invincible"
With the bullet spread, damage, and how much they move their heads around, they might as well be!

it's dependent on frames per second that the game is running at, he opens it straight away at 30fps but on anything above that he just stands around for ages
If the warrior really has 207,000 health you shot him with 69,000 bullets which means you had to click your mouse 13,800 times if you were aiming to kill the warrior
Mouse? Is it not that clearly obvious from the very start of the video that author plays with gamepad?
I thought funny how nobody was talking about this, since it increased the difficulty of the challenge quite much, seeing how he struggles with aim in starting location already. Did nobody really paid attention?

About what you said about save editors for exp grinding, I totally support it. Challenges aren't about how long you can stand in fight for sanctuary or digi-peak, but about what you do after you get exp. As long as you don't immediately resort to something crazy like level 80 (unless that happens to be necessary), I think cutting grinding time down for more uploads and sanity is better. Keep up the great work!

I don’t I find it stupid because half the challenge in borderland’s is level difference
@@RevampReborn I get what you are saying, but I personally disagree. Even with save editors, he wont necessarily put himself on level or above leveled and can still try and clear areas underlevelled. Without save editors he could still just sit in fight for sanctuary for a few days and reach extremely high levels that way, defeating the purpose of not leveling with an editor.
I disagree too. Part of the challenge is the unique approaches that you have to come up with in order to accommodate the rules of the run. Relying on outside tools kind of takes the magic away yknow
I agree I mean what's the diff between waiting on skags to yeet themselves and just going ahead and immediately getting those lvls
Currently trying to 100% this like I did with borderlands 1. This came on my suggested feed and I put it on thinking I could fall asleep to it or something. But I couldn't bc I was fully invested in this video. Your play style, the idea, the dedication, time spent, tone of voice, and just generally how you speak was all so cool. My household has watched this video 3x now and every time find something more to appreciate. Thank you so much man!! You Def have a few fans out here in NY
Thank you so much! I'm really glad that you enjoy it enough to watch once, let alone more. It's still surreal to think about the things I've made being shared around, and it's really heart warming to hear about a whole household amused by my ramblings.
Also, I wish you luck in hundred percenting the game! Make sure to check that you've gone everywhere in each map. Filling them out and having to revisit them was responsible for some achievements I didn't get for a while. And also one that I still don't have on the Steam version. Similarly, best of luck with Challenge Accepted, because it's... a bit of a time investment.

But what if (and hear me out) you save yourself so much PAIN AND ANGUISH....by using another character to grab a SECOND basic repeater to put in the secret stash in Sanctuary?
This gun takes every enemy and turns each into a 6 hour war of attrition.
It's an incredibly fine line to walk between "admirable stupidity" and "stupidity." Congrats for threading that dubious needle.
Cl4P-TP IS a vault hunter though. He's playable in The Pre-Sequel. Not to mention that he used to be MINAC (Mega Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap)

Idk, but when you said it upon defeating the Warrior, it's like all this gigantic, and honestly sorta questionable effort at last truly payed off; and like heroes in "Hercules" get painted among the stars to be immortalized, you entered among other Vault Hunter legends as the one who used his basic freaking repeater to take down all the alien powers that no one could before you; proving you're not dependent on weapon manufacturers refusing to be just another cog in the machine, but rather using your own smarts, monk-like patience, and even the planet's environment to your advantage like some kind of insane sci-fi druid. What a Vault Hunter, honestly.

I think a lot of it comes down to finding fun in the parts that you can, and knowing how to find fun in the parts that you can't otherwise. For instance, talking to a friend/watching a video while spending several hours trying to kill an ancient Eridian monster. Honestly though, I was legitimately having trouble not falling asleep during that last fight. My head was getting really heavy.
I have also done this challenge, before any of the dlcs came out and holy fuck it was so slow and painful. Then the dlcs got added and kinda made it a smidge less painful but still
Im proud of you for not playing Maya and using Cloud Kill to kill everything.
Btw, you could have duplicated the starter pistol with the Locker and then gunzerked with two of them.
Nah, because that'd be pretty much just a Cloudkill run. And sure, you can duplicate a starter pistol, but I was using _The_ Starter Pistol.
Cloud Kill became cringe when it went from a funny joke to an OP cheese skill. This challenge is craaaaaaaaazy

The thing i hate the most about the basic starter pistol in this game is the fact that it gets a chocolate chip desert camo but the only time anyone ever uses it is in the frozen arctic that is the beginning of borderlands 2. you sir are the exception. I would have done this with an autoclicker on pc.

Im playing bl3 and got to Joeys fight on Mayhem 5.
That fight took me a solid hour, at least. A quarter of the way through his shield, i wanted to quit, but kept going.
I made it thru that shlog but i cannot imagine sitting in one fight for 6 hours.
Also great insight about Roland being married to conflict and needing therapy and a few other things that I haven't heard others say but were very on point

Fun fact: the starter pistol is worse than an equivalent white rarity dahl pistol with the same parts. The barrel it uses is a unique barrel that's just worse

Not necessarily a bad idea, but I think I'd need to learn more about Payday first. Framing the concept sounds like it'd be really fun. I've played a bit of the second one, but briefly and only solo.

The basic repeater is actually a unique pistol it has a hidden part called crappy starter
It really is. For some reason the first gun you ever get is a unique that isn't of rare or epic quality

At some point, it becomes a cross between a personal vendetta and the sunk cost fallacy. If you've made it all the way to the Warrior, then you've just gotta see it through.

Just for future weapon restricted runs, if you pick up any gun, you get some ammo from doing that. I learned this from watching a rocket launcher run. So, even though you can't use them, picking up pistols would be the same as picking up pistol ammo.
It's both incredibly helpful and also not, depending on your luck and how much you farm for proper drops. It tends to be why I favor Sal/Moze for weapon restricted runs. It just seems less fun when the answer is "ammo stops it dead."

It was only in normal mode, but I also have heard similar arguments made even for said normal mode. I think a lot of it comes down to a willingness to problem solve, and the time to do so.
Dang that bloodwing fight is crazy I'm completely mind blown
It's not a strategy that I'd recommend using throughout the whole fight unless you're in fairly dire circumstances, but it's comforting to know that there's a really solid fallback.

Man I won't lie, I was expecting a bore zero build with this for seriousness but I was like damn... he fr is doin it (I just got recommended this in my feed, December 2023)
I think it wouldve been fine to give yourself another repeater through claptraps locker so you can gunzerk but i respect your dedication
Should try this type of run with Zane's Shrike pistol in Borderlands 3. The one you see him holding in the skill tree menu IS a unique weapon and can be sold by the Black Market and can even found in the Diamond Chest room on Sanctuary. Though... I guess good luck on getting that variant because it's all RNG.
Possibly... The scary part of taking on a run with fixed damage in three is how it handles level scaling. Accidentally raise your level too much, and things get really bad really fast.
@@SpuddyCube All I know is I'm going to use one on my Dahl Allegiance Zane because I got one from the Black Market months ago, at max level too. Sadly not at Mayhem 10 but what ever.

I saw the title and about 10-20sec in the video I'm like he's going to use Salvador because he can regen bullets via gunzerk.
The game only gives you one without some shenanigans. So only one would I use!
