Fabulous. The mind certainly boggles as to how they put the original cornerstones up there 250 years ago! I look forward to watching your further progress.

Builders have known how to use cranes since the Roman era and have been able to lift even heavier loads. It isn't about brute strength but about careful leveraging and placement. The workmen used their intelligence more than their muscles. Brute strength wouldn't really help with one tone blocks like those you saw installed The workmen could work more slowly in the past because their lives weren't as strictly regulated by the clock. It would have only taken them longer to build a timber crane. That's really the only difference. Another thing the original builders would probably have done would have been to erect the timber crane within the building foot print before floors and roof timbers were in place. That way they would have been able to use a single crane to hoist the stones to the proper level and either set them where the boom can reach or roll them on top of the wall to set them next to each other. The walls are very think and even those cornice blocks don't actually cover the full thickness of the underlying masonry. They project out over the lower blocks about as much as they cover the brick and stone wall.
You should remember that people tended to be shorter and smaller a few hundred years ago, especially reflecting class or income. Meat was always expensive so they didn't tend to get as much if they were low to middle income. The diet of the wealthy was always richer in calories, protein and variety. The wealthy did tend to look healthier, grow taller and heavier, even to fat and were probably even a bit smarter. and tended to live longer too. Living conditions were a lot harder on them, of all classes. The medicine they had was practically useless.
The stonecutters use grinders and pneumatic chisels today whereas it would have been mallets and chisels only in the historic periods. Perhaps a lot more man power was used in the 18th century because they had to use human labor for everything we use power equipment to do. The could work slower but were more patient at many tedious tasks.
The owner says the Chateau was built of stone reused from a previous building but I wonder if she means the stones were recut to fit a new design? Could they have possibly taken an old building apart only to put it back to together again? I doubt that. Reusing existing stone and reshaping to fit the new design is far more likely and more common. Stone cutting of that quality is expensive and that white limestone is what was frequently used in palaces like Versailles.. But Versailles has a honey color.

I am a new subscriber and am very interested in your restoration process. Please make more content of the nuts and bolts of the restoration and less of the “danger”of the project. The crew seems well qualified to do this work and I observed a professional job.
I stopped watching HGTV due to the made up drama of home renovations. If you have an actual issue..walk us through the process to address the uncertainty and risks. A video of four corner stones lifted by a crane and easily sent into the cornice presented no drama or danger to this viewer.
I wish you all the best in the monumental restoration project. I look forward to more content in your posts.

I am very excited for you please historic moment, for this personal moment, for this difficult accomplishment to finally be finished, to be able to complete what has been an expensive task no doubt and a dangerous task to be completed as well. However all that being said I wish the camera footage could have shown better the cornerstones actually being slipped into it’s own place , so very meticulously. I’m sure this took hours and it was not something done in a matter of minutes and it would’ve been wonderful to have caught it up close. Yes! Let’s not diminish the value of this very very large crane that it took to carry that massive corner stone and then, get it into the precise place, & LEVEL!!! My father was a Masonary and he was passionate about his work and he was so loved for the quality of work he did, that when he passed away from an unexpected heart attack, people came from all over the United States to acknowledge his wonderful concrete work… He poured sidewalks in many counties & cities, in various states…Mostly the Midwest; he poured foundations for many buildings both commercial and private, both large and small, both standard and historical; etc. He never poured concrete walls, what is the station now in the Midwest anyway, but rather he was often called to repair new home walls that had been backfilled too soon because he was an expert at laying cinderblock and he could fix these walls and support them strong enough for a lifetime and look as if it had been poured when he was finished. It was hard work and he loved it and I loved working with him although I am a girl but it was his bag for building and precision that made me want to be an architect and then later interior designer. Anyway as I was saying when he passed away, the church was so full they had to put speakers outside the large church and more chairs outside because so many came to pay their respects to a very Loved & Hardworking Man….Cards arrived at my mothers house for over a year, Who is thank you notes in money for the unpaid bills or just acknowledging work My father did for free many times to help people out in desperate situations and he would tell him, “you can pay me later and one such letter came from as far as 2,200 miles to pay a 40-year old debt….My father loved, building you but especially renovating old and repurposing and reusing items long before it was ever fashionable. I wish she was alive he talk to him about your Beautiful château & Amazing work you are doing❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️Thank you to let me be a part of it with you!!
