[Something Out of Nothing Episode 21] COWBOY HATS: Chamois Anyone? CUSTOM/KITBASHED

  • I had made a leather hat a few episodes back with a matching leather holster. I tried my luck with chamois the other day and show you the results using a pattern I scaled down to 1/6 scale I found on the Internet.
The chamois is used to wipe down cars after they are washed. It is thin leather. I cut the chamois using a one inch top part and a 3/4 of an inch top part. The first hat when fabric black paint was used dried outside and the ends raised up like a modern cowboy hat. The 3/4 of an inch top dried with three folded up parts, surprisingly like real vintage cowboy hats. I was wanting such a hat, but I didn't know the hats would flip up in different ways. I kind of wonder if the length of the top of the hat made the flipped parts different or if the superglue placement produced the outcomes that occurred. In the end, I may never know the answer.
I want to make a holster rig with the chamois as well as chaps. That ought to be interesting. The only problem with this material is that, despite using fabric paint, the hats are quite rigid. I will experiment with bending the holster a bit around to see if I can work some of the rigidity out of the material. Hopefully that will work. I will also try to make a hat out of felt. That should be interesting.
Regardless, everyone please have a great day and have fun customizing.

Very nice job 😊👍 I love it when the materials cooperate LOL! I have made a few things where the materials have warped into a shape that I like, but sometimes the materials just want to get on your nerves and do exactly the opposite of what you need it to do LOL. I have no idea of how many times I have been cursing while trying to fix unwanted warps in the materials 😂😂😂

LOLOL I would have been so frustrated if the hats had warped in weird ways. I don't know why I wasn't expecting any warping; the material is very thin. If it had warped poorly, my only hope would have been maybe it could be re-shaped if I could somehow soften things up again. I was so shocked by what happened. I wanted the first look for both hats, but I eventually wanted the triple warp. The fact that I got both was really, and I mean really, weird. The bad thing is I probably will not know what caused it to do what it did in both cases. The differences are two . . . the height of the hat and how the super glue was applied. I will try to make another hat and just see what happens I guess. I guess I can't lose on that. I need to try to make a hat softer anyway. If it warps wrong, that will give me permission to mess with it in an attempt to soften it. Win, win, win. LOL You have a great day my friend! 🤗🤗💖🤗🤗

@@UndergroundActionFigures I don’t know how well the material takes in moisture, but it probably what happend. You could try to intentionally do it again. Just wet the material with paint in a very spesific place, and leave the rest unpainted and see what happens. The painted areas should start to curl up as long as there aren’t any other curls around to work against the one you are trying to make. You can also try to force the material into a shape by coating it with paint and curl it around a pencil or something untill the paint dries. It all depends on how well a material takes in moisture.
