  • Old Cinema To Reopen?
    7.00PM Wed May 19 2010
A campaign's been launched to get one of the region's traditional cinemas reopened. The Preston Odeon opened as the New Victoria in 1928 and showed some of the greatest films in cinema history. When it closed, nearly 20 years ago, the building quickly fell into disrepair. Now it's up for sale - and campaigners want to buy it for future generations.

Even big screen multiplexes are dull and boring. Old cinemas have a heart. New cinemas are cold blocks of concrete

When I compare going to the cinema. I always compare it to my experience of the Odeon in Preston. The entrance into the building and as you walked up those little steps from a small waiting area, where you went for a pee before those final stairs. Up the stairs you went. Confronted by that big screen and red curtain. You looked around, took your seat or went for a little jog around for fun on those steps. I would love to share with my children and grandchildren. Modern multi cinemas with tiny screens just don't have the same feeling of being somewhere special. This Odeon always added to the excitement of being somewhere special to watch a movie. A feeling you just cant get in any other surroundings. I hope someone breathes life back into her.

Id love to see more building like this in Preston - and less like the awful shithole next door to. Shops and tacky pubs chains is all Preston council seem to care about

I remember watching Back to the Future there when I was a kid. It would be great to see all of the old features uncovered and fully restored. Even if it wasn't used as a cinema it could still be turned into one of the best music venues in the North West. Just look at the Apollo in Manchester for inspiration! It could even have access to next door as I presume the old entrance is still there. Preston as always though always thinks short term and usually makes the wrong decisions. A damn shame

the odeon on south clerk street in edinburgh was originally called the new victoria as well until it was taken over by odeon it was called the gaumont then the odeon it was tripled in the late seventies then two further screens were added in the late 80's it closed in early 00's and is still empty though efforts are being made to try and get it reopened as a cinema the glasgow odeon which was also closed has had the auditorium area demolished though the frontage was retained and is going to become an office block it was the first odeon to be tripled in 1970 and was further expanded to six screens by the the time of its closure odeon usually put a deed of covenant in the sale of any of these cinemas which prevents them from being reopened as a cinema
