  • Saturday evening drive around Johannesburg South Africa, known as the City of Gold for its mineral rich surroundings, home to large-scale gold and diamond trades. If you're in Cape Town, don't forget to take an inexpensive 1 hour flight to Johannesburg! South Africans' speak English, Afrikaans (a language of southern Africa, derived from the form of Dutch brought to the Cape by Protestant settlers in the 17th century, and an official language of South Africa), Xhosa, and Zulu. Pro Tip. Write down 10 basic phrases from each language in your mobile phone note pad. It makes traveling so much easier. The locals always appreciate talking with someone who takes the time to learn a few phrases in their language.
    Starting Point: goo.gl/maps/ak... .
Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest city and capital of Gauteng province, began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. Its sprawling Soweto township was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now the Mandela House museum. - Google
Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or "The City of Gold", is the largest city in South Africa, classified as a megacity, and is one of the 100 largest urban areas in the world. According to Demographia, the Johannesburg-Pretoria urban area (combined because of strong transport links that make commuting feasible) is the 26th-largest in the world, with 14,167,000 inhabitants. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. Johannesburg is the seat of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa. Most of the major South African companies and banks have their head offices in Johannesburg. The city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of large-scale gold and diamond trade. It was one of the host cities of the official tournament of the 2010 FIFA World Cup - and it hosted the final.
The city was established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what had been a farm. Due to the extremely large gold deposit found along the Witwatersrand, within ten years, the population had grown to 100,000 inhabitants.
A separate city from the late 1970s until 1994, Soweto is now part of Johannesburg. Originally an acronym for "South-Western Townships", Soweto originated as a collection of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg, populated mostly by native African workers from the gold mining industry.
The metropolis is an alpha global city as listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. In 2019, the population of the city of Johannesburg was 5,635,127, making it the most populous city in South Africa. In the same year, the population of Johannesburg's urban agglomeration was put at 8,000,000. Land area of the municipal city (1,645 km2 or 635 sq mi) is large in comparison with those of other major cities, resulting in a moderate population density of 2,364 per square kilometre (6,120/sq mi).

Years upon years of corruption and incompetence of cANCer's government has left the once mighty Johannesburg dilapidated. Old buildings, filthy streets and crime have become Jo'burg's unpleasant hallmarks. I reckon, Cape Town is the most beautiful and clean city in South Africa because it is managed by competent people.

@@nataliekhanyola5669 You are so uninformed and ignorant. Dams are the responsibility of the National government. Again water scarcity at that time was as a result of lack of of rain. That's nature and nobody controls it. Right now in Jo'burg taps are dry, who do you blame? Cape Town is the best run metro in the entire South Africa even the Auditor General attest to that. You jealous because your corrupt ANC knows nothing about good governance.

There is a strange dystopia in this part of Joburg. The cars look new, they drive in their lane, all the traffic lights work, people dress well. But on the contrary, the buildings look neglected, it is not very dirty but it is not an example of cleanliness either. It's not terrible, but it's not great either. It could be solved with a good municipal policy, but I understand that this is difficult when work is scarce.

Locals don’t live in the CBD. Most drive through it to go to work and some work in the few remaining companies there. But mostly people who inhabit the Old CBD are illegal immigrants(asylum seekers) living in hijacked buildings. That is why you see little to no maintenance. It’s a very strange city.
When Apartheid ended, because the white government never allowed black South Africans to live in the cities, alotta African economic immigrants who had no homes quickly rushed into this city and they found empty buildings that were inhabited by white people prior and they just moved in illegally. And now this is the results of the Apartheid legacy. But it is an issue that has to be addressed sooner than later. It is not healthy to have a city in a country that is occupied by 80% foreign nationals. That is why no one takes pride in it.

I grew up in Joburg throughout the 1970's. I'm aware of the evils of apartheid and the era I was brought into as a child, but my God, this city was so beautiful back then. I can say, as children we didn't understand why black and white people should be separated - it made no sense to us kids. And now... here in front of our eyes is the result of decades of apartheid: This city was once so safe and functional. Clean and vibrant. Crime of any sort was not tolerated. I can't help but wonder - if instead of segregating the population back in the mid 20th century, they integrated everyone - if we all had to go to the same schools and learn the same values... I doubt we'd be looking at this sad crumbling crime-ridden relic of what was once such a functional city. I don't blame the people of today, I blame the people going back 60, 70, 80 years ago for setting the stage for this. Now visibly - I'm shocked at what this city now looks like. The ANC can also hang their heads in utter shame. Nelson is turning in his grave at your utter failure to take the fantastic city (and country) of gold and squander it into a crime-ridden imploding hell. I live on the other side of the world and would not return to this mess - "not for all the tea in China!"

I often get on google earth and tour SA and I have to say from what I've seen on it there is garbage strewn every where in the Johannesburg, it looks horrible. I also notice the vast majority of homes have walls or electric fences surrounding their property. I feel for anyone that has to live like that, it's just horrible. Good video as always. I've always been a proponent of city planning based on people's needs, instead of the 'NYC' effect every city tries to slowly implement by building huge brick and glass building that will not be maintained, since the economy can't support it. It's unfortunate that the result is a neglected-looking city where most buildings serve no purpose and can actually negatively affect simple living. These days, I think cities with public transportation and heightened security are better and more suitable.

Amigos Sudafricanos.

Whether you guys wanna admit it or not, the only reason this country has got a serious economy above most African countries is because of foreigners (mostly white). And am proudly black btw.

Makes you think would sa be better if they kept apartheid. There would be racism and division but much less corruption and money laundering

@@ngmn5402 I don't need to watch the video, I drive past Joburg every day. I know what I'm talking about. Majority of Joburg is nasty especially the cbd (downtown), it gets better when you go to the northern side of Johannesburg.
