  • Learn the CALLS and SOUNDS of a Red-shouldered Hawk! These beautiful raptors are very vocal every spring. They are so loud that most people hear them before seeing them.

Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) are fairly easy to identify by sound. Listen for a LOUD “kee-ahh,” with the second note descending in pitch.
The “kee-aah” call is often repeated. It is very loud and can be heard from many miles away.
Red-shouldered Hawks are most often heard between April and June during the breeding season. They use their calls to attract females and defend territory.
These raptors are common in the eastern half of North America. Interestingly, there is also a population that lives on the west coast.
Distinctly marked, Red-shouldered Hawks have a barred rufous chest, mostly white underwings, a strongly banded tail, and of course, red shoulders that are visible when perched.
Red-shouldered Hawks are primarily forest dwellers. These raptors are common in suburban areas where houses have been mixed into woodlands.
    Length: 15-19 inches / 38-48 cm
    Weight: 1.1-1.9 lbs. / 500-860 gm
    Wingspan: 38-42 inches / 96-107 cm

We had a family of Red Shoulders in a Sycamore tree in Alpine,CA. One season, they had 2 chick's and fed both of them. They were awesome parents. I watched them fledge and I hope both survived. A memory I will never forget.

Keep in mind that bluejays are master impersonators of raptors. I constantly hear them mimic red shouldered hawks, Cooper's Hawks, and recently I've heard them as Mississippi Kites! If you hear a red shouldered hawk call coming from a tree and don't see a large bird, chances are it's a bluejay!

This comment omg! I really thought I was the only one hearing bluejays mimicking red shouldered hawks like I thought this only happened in my backyard wow why do they do this? I haven't heard them mimicking any other birds of prey but that's really interesting

Thank you for this comment! We heard the loud call and used a bird ID app from inside and it said red tailed hawk, but upon excitedly looking outside I couldn’t see any. However there was a blue jay digging in one of my raised bed gardens right outside the window. Interesting!

I live in Tennessee, in the foothills near the edge of the Cherokee National Forest.
I hear these quite frequently, but I’ve never seen one until today!
It was in a field at the edge of the woods, bent down drinking from a small marshy stream in the grass. It was beautiful, and definitely the highlight of my day!

I just watched two males fighting on the hillside behind my house. This helped me identify them because of their high pitched cries. I live in a coastal town within Los Angeles, CA. We have several types of hawks but these were smaller than what I typically see so I wasn’t entirely sure. Thanks for the video!

We live in Southern California on the edge of the city/open space and have MANY red shouldered (and red tailed) hawks due to the large ground squirrel population (they are a PAIN). Only today we had a hawk in our yard standing over a dead squirrel. We love to see them and hear their calls most days. 2 years ago our neighbors had a family of 5 nesting in their yard and teaching the young to hunt etc. What a treat that was. Thanks for the video

I just had a Red-Shouldered Hawk in my backyard in Houston, Texas. I am near Bear Creek Park in the Addicks Reservoir. It was the call that caught my attention from inside my home. It was absolutely beautiful, and I feel honored to have watched it closely through binoculars as it was perched so strong and majestic calling from atop a telephone pole. What a perfect place to make its call!

We live just south of Tampa, Florida, less than 5 miles from the Alafia River and Tampa Bay. We're in the middle of 6+ acres of woodlands with many mature oak trees and a variety of others, including pines and palms. We hear these beauties literally daily, especially this time of year, and see them often in our backyard, occasionally with fresh prey in their clutches. They are almost as common as the Spanish moss ithat hangs off the oak trees. They are truly magnificent creatures, and we love that they have chosen to seek refuge here from all the (what we consider to be) overdevelopment of land. We would love to purchase surrounding properties and make it a nature preserve that could never be cleared to build another strip mall, apartment building, etc. These guys and many other wonderful species are running out of places to live, and that makes us both sad and angry.

I'm in the NW part of San Diego about 7 miles from the beach. We have two red-shouldered hawks that fly back and forth from our Eucalyptus tree to the giant palm tree about a block away. They take turns swooping down about 15 feet above our heads! Certainly much more noisy than the rooster in our neighbor's backyard. But we love having them!

We are lucky enough to have a pair of red shouldered hawks nesting nearby. We have been watching them for months. One day , one of the hawks sat on a low tree limb to watch us. We were in a covered lean-to back porch. My daughter and I were able to take several pictures through the plexiglass . It was amazing to see this hawk so low and so close to us.

I've only started hearing it in the past few years, so I think they're new residents, hehe. More than that, I think I SAW this hawk today--the size, the striped wings, and the brown/red belly all match! I live in Northern Kentucky, approximately 15 miles south of Cincinnati Ohio. I have had a hawk hanging around here for a few years now, but have never been able to see it close enough or hear it’s call to be able to identify the type of hawk.
After watching and listening to this- AND the fact it flew out of my very large magnolia tree in my backyard yesterday, I can definitively say it was a red-shouldered hawk. It was truly magnificent to see and finally be able to properly identify it!!

I live in Louisville, KY and am visited by one and possibly two red shouldered hawks about 3 to 4 times a week soaring over my backyard and through the subdivision. We live near forested area named the parklands of Louisville that also has a large creek named Floyds Fork running right through it. I have a one year old and 10 week old pug puppies that I let out in the morning in my backyard around 7:00 to 8:00 am when I usually see the hawks. So I walk with them to protect them as my smallest puppy is only 7 pounds. One morning as I was walking with the puppies the hawk actually flew about 30 feet right over my head. I always go out into the yard when I let them out. I only see the hawks in the morning but occasionally hear calls in the afternoon. So it must be nesting somewhere near by. We have so many trees and houses that I only get about 3 to 4 seconds of seeing them before there gone. Love seeing them soaring overhead!

I have two red shouldered hawks in my backyard, calling back and forth. I am located about 50 miles east of Kansas City, MO. I was lucky enough to get several pictures today, although they were grainy because I was walking the dogs at the time. We got within 30 feet of one before it flew away.

We live in Southeastern North Caolina very near the Atlantic coast. We are in a neighborhood surrounded by tall pines with a creek nearby. We have seen several of these hawks flying around. One landed on our fence eating a snake he had caught. Thank you for the video of their calls that confirmed our identity of these beautiful birds of prey!

I’ve been hearing them for about 3 weeks now and finally saw two flying around in the trees surrounding my back yard. There’s a huge nest as well! I live in Butler County, PA!

So glad I found this video. We've had the same one doing this around our house here in Gatlinburg Tennessee for over a year now. I always thought it was a red tailed but now I know. Thanks

I remembered back in Arkansas, at our lake house when we were visiting my son whose in college, there was a Red-Shouldered Hawk on a wire perching with a dead dove on in it’s beak. I remembered how all my of kids were so amazed by it. What a Extrodinary sight, amazing video.

There is at least a pair of red shouldered hawks living around my house on the central coast of CA. I try to get a look at them whenever I hear them calling.

Had one in our backyard in Texas that tried to grow up too fast. He was on our metal fence so I put a welding glove on and carried it to a low branch in a tree. He left the next morning after a peaceful night's sleep. He's still getting the hang of flying so as I watch him do that I stumbled on this video. I'm using the recordings to keep tabs on where he is because he answers the calls. He looks quite magnificent in flight. I think he'll do just fine.

I’m in Westwood, MA and have been hearing and seeing the red-shouldered hawk for several days in the woods off of my balcony . I downloaded the Merlin ID app and was able to identify it by its call.

I frequently hear red shouldered hawks in the neighborhoods and parks in the East end of La Mesa, San Diego County, CA. In fact I am hearing one right now as I am sitting at a large park in La Mesa. I've also heard them at a park in nearby Spring Valley, CA.

North Texas near DFW. It was eyeing my chickens. He was enormous too! I’ve had to add netting over my chickens as he got at least one of them. I hear him and his friends quite often.
