    A year old and still so nice to watch. Thanks Dave. Love to Mo.
    it would be funny I’d you could compile a video of bloopers. Things that have gone wrong. Well keep the blue side up!

    • @daveoutdoorsscotland2854
      @daveoutdoorsscotland2854  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Gary, I think the bloopers would be fun. I've certainly made a few. It might take a while to dig through old footage to find them though. I think I'll open up a bloopers folder and drop stuff in as it happens, that way it will be easy to retrieve. Then, when I've gathered enough for a vid, I'll stitch something together. I've canoe camped on that wee island many times, mostly in winter. This is the first winter in many years that I've not been canoe camping. Missing it terribly. Keep blue side up too Gary. Mo sends her love back....we were out on the bikes today, doing last weeks route but without the cameras. Dave

    It’s too bad that you couldn’t paddled your canoe closer to your camp site. Just for more convenience . Well you don’t have to worry about bears like we do. 😅🇨🇦👍. Good job thanks.

      Hi Tom, thanks for viewing and commenting, very much appreciated. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. When the water level is low, there are more take outs, one of which is closer to the spot I camped. Heavy rains and beaver action meant that this take out was tricky, hence the hike. I'm guessing you're Canadian? I absolutely love the Canadian canoe culture. You have some amazing landscapes and some highly skilled canoeists. Once the world returns to some sort of normality, I must try to revisit your wonderful country (I'll seek your advice on the bears :). Stay safe and thanks again for viewing. ATB, Dave

      Hi Billy, island camping is great fun. There are lots of good spots in the highlands. Some of the best spots are not too difficult to reach, which is useful if the weather changes. I've been locked down by wind a few times on the big lochs but the sheltered lochs are pretty safe. The damage was caused by beavers. Quite an emotive subject and I've not really formulated an opinion yet about whether its a good thing or bad thing. They can certainly be destructive though. Thanks for viewing, very much appreciated. ATB, Dave

    Thanks Dave, another good video. I have just bought myself a second hand Old Town Guide 147.
    I canoed the Caledonian Canal last year, wild camping on the way. But it was with a group, so I hope to return with my own canoe one day.
    In the mean time, I will have to settle for the Thames, the Medway and the Wye in the South East where I live.
    Keep the videos coming. Could you list your equipment in your comments please. I'm sure many of your watchers would appreciate it.
    E.g. Canoe, Paddle, Wellingtons, Kettle, Tent, Sleeping Bag, Mattress etc.
    Thanks. Be safe.

    Might be a daft question....but can you paddle back up river to Killin?

    • @daveoutdoorsscotland2854
      @daveoutdoorsscotland2854  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ov, thanks for viewing and commenting, very much appreciated. It is relatively easy to paddle back upriver to the take out (the take out is by a wee ramp that the boating club use and they don’t seem to mind if you reverse a car down to load up).The river is pretty wide and deep and although there can be a strong current at times, it is quite easy to find slack water away from the main tow. The lochay and dochart converge quite close to Loch Tay. Be careful at that point, especially if the rivers are high, since there can be sub-surface turbulence and small whirlpools. You can avoid the difficulties by hugging the left bank of the lochay. Overall, it is an easy paddle (in both directions) and a lot of fun. There is plenty evidence of beavers too, although they can be difficult to spot. The closest I got to one was on the road in Killin, which tells me that they are not all shy! Hope this helps. The Outdoor shop in Killin is also a good source of info’ (it’s worthwhile popping in to check out the shop and have a chat). Shutters Cafe in Killin do some lovely coffee and baking for a post-expedition treat. ATB, Dave

      @@daveoutdoorsscotland2854 sorry for the delay in replying Dave, and thanks for your help. Pleased to say I'm now ready and will be kayaking the perimeter of Tay over 3 days end of March, wild camping at night out if sight. I am considering finding somewhere to park either at Kenmore or Killin. Wondering where you can park your car safely at Killin, perhaps the boat club would allow me to park there if I called prior to the trip to arrange? Where did you park up on your trip?

    • @daveoutdoorsscotland2854
      @daveoutdoorsscotland2854  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ovrobinson7780 Hi Ov, you can easily park in Killin. There is a decent sized carpark on the opposite side of the road to the boat club access lane. It is free to park there. I've left my car there many times and never had any trouble. There is a fish n chip van in one corner of the carpark; I usually park at the opposite end, where there always seems to be plenty of space. I think I mentioned that you can easily drive down to the 'put in' and offload your gear there but there is not much space and parking by the waters edge is not permitted. In the very unlikely event that the carpark was full, you could ask to leave your car at the hotel, but I'm sure you will easily find a spot in the carpark. If the outdoor shop is open when you arrive in Killin, pop in and have a chat with the owner and tell him your plans. He is a really nice guy and can give you some local knowledge. His shop is just 100m up the road from the carpark and he usually has hire canoes stacked outside. Hope you have a great trip. Stay safe. ATB, Dave

      @@daveoutdoorsscotland2854 great thanks Dave. I think I know where you mean, although I'm only using Google maps to zoom in and out. I can see there's what looks like a large car park, coach parking, public toilets, big green building/shelter etc. I might have a word with the hotel and offer to pay in return for parking there for a few nights, might make me feel more assured that the car is there for a few nights. I'll take some video footage and upload ro my channel to shoe you how we get on. Thanks mate 👍

    Thank you for sharing! Cool to see canoe tripping in the UK. I already have plans to come to Scotland to hike, maybe I’ll tag on a canoe trip! I’ll have to find an outfitter. If you have any recommendations for 2-7 night canoe routes in the highlands, that would be much appreciated. Much love from Canada 🇨🇦

      Hello Steph, welcome to the channel. Thank you so much for viewing and commenting, very much appreciated. Ah Canada, what a wonderful country indeed. I'd love to visit and enjoying paddling your lakes and rivers. I've given a few lectures in Canada but haven't had the opportunity to visit in a long time. I hope to rectify that at some point and spend my time holding a paddle rather than a microphone. There are lots of canoe trips you could take. Keep in touch and let's see if I can come up with a route for you. But, my first thoughts are; hire a canoe and some gear and then travel round the country by car, using the canoe to access remote and beautiful wild camping spots. These could include the islands on Loch Lomond, the islands on Loch Marie, a bonnie wee island on Loch Ba, close to Glencoe, the remote side of Loch Arkaig etc etc. In that way, you can see so much of the country in relative comfort but still experience the wild-side of Scotland by camping in locations that most folk simply can't reach. There are also a number of Mountain Bothies (check out the MBA's website), where you could paddle in with some fuel for the fire or stove and have a lovely evening in an ancient dwelling. Lots of opportunities for a memorable visit. Most of the islands and shorelines I've mentioned can be reached in a few hours but there are some locations that would require much more effort; all depends on how much paddling time you want in relation to camp/hike/explore time. In terms of timing, I'd suggest May or June, to avoid the midges. Scotland is windy so be prepared to hug shorelines, especially if you're planning on solo paddling. Hope this helps; keep in touch. ATB, Dave

      @@daveoutdoorsscotland2854 Thank you so much for all your advice Dave! I will definitely look into your suggestions:) Accessing remote areas that are less travelled would be incredible and I love the idea of staying in a bothy. I hope you will have a chance to come explore Canada, it’s a backcountry paddler’s paradise.

    Great video! Did you leave your car overnight, or have a driver to take it back and pick you up next day? I'll need to see if you've posted other videos of other lochs. We're really lucky up here with the wild outdoors!

      Thanks for the feedback Chris, much appreciated. I parked the car in the public carpark in Killin. I usually pop in and have a chat with the lad in the outdoor store and let him know my plans. On this occasion the store was closed so I mentioned my plans to the staff of the Post Office. Generally speaking, it is safe enough to leave your car (legally) parked for overnight camps throughout much of Scotland.

      Hello David, welcome to the channel. The 'long shots' have become a feature of my filming. I'm trying to give the viewer the feeling of space and scale that I enjoy during my outdoor adventures. Basically, I just have to turn around and paddle back to collect the camera. When I'm hiking, I sometimes search out routes with parallel ridges. I setup the camera on one ridge and climb the other. It takes time but I enjoy the results. Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. ATB Dave

      Hi Andrew, it is a Crux. It is a pretty old one. I think the Crux x2 Storm is pretty similar and, as far as I'm aware, is still available. Try searching online for Crux UK. They also make pretty good rucksacks. I was using a Macpac on this trip but if you check out some of my day hike vids to the hills you will see a Crux AK47 sac.
