Hub’s orders to Misawa just got posted today so I’m now. We were in Atsugi yrs ago but that was a totally different time and place than Misawa and now post pandemic so I’m very thankful that I came across your video! Thank you for this!
We lived there from 1974-1976. We lived off base in the W area and moved on base within 2-3 months and it was right inside the main gate. I loved it there and still in touch with ladies I met there. We all loved it, we are Misawa sisters for life. We all met in 2014 for a reunion and it was wonderful.
My wife and I definitely prefer it here on north base. Althought it would be nice to be a walk away from everything like in main base. Also your videos has us figure out where to go next for our trips in Japan!
Im jealous! I was there when they just started the renovation of the H styles. We had no a/c and would have to run four or more fans with a dehumidifier and it still wasn’t comfortable. We also had stainless steel countertops. Another thing we had to do was purchase and install a wood fence and you had to remove it before you left. Even with all that I would still go back in a heartbeat
So, I was a kid when I was there. No idea where exactly I lived on the AFB. It was a house. Two story. Kinda wish I could find a video of Misawa AFB like a drive around to see what it all looks like now. Ha ha! Snow! Yeah, it does snow there!
@@mattanddags OMG I arrived in Misawa mid April and had just brought a sweater, I froze. Then it began snowing around the first of November! At least then I had all my stuff.
North Base used to just be called the Hill and that's where all the 'security' people worked...used to bus/drive there from main base....Is the ski lodge still up there near north base?
If it's just a family of two, plus dogs, this is the default option for enlisted, right? I see Misawa also has a 2-bedroom tower option (apartment complex) but I doubt it's pet friendly?
It really depends on what is available when you arrive in Misawa. Most likely you will end up in a two-bedroom H-Style or a two-bedroom tower. There are people with pets that live in the tower but an H-Style would be much easier with a dog!
That's immaculate compared to the little off-base cracker box we had in the 60's. Don't get me wrong, we loved it, but for a family with five kids it was tiny.
So can married couples live off base now? I just got my orders and I’m struggling to find any resources for house hunting. Do you know any websites where I can look around?
Yes, they've changed the rules since this video was made. Married couples can live off-base and single Sailors will have to live on-base. I don't think you can start house hunting until you get to Misawa. And if there are no houses available off-base they will put you on-base. The housing office website might have more info. I also recommend joining "Misawa Asks" on Facebook and looking for posts about the housing.
You are allowed to paint the walls, you just have to get it approved by housing before painting. And as of now, you don't have to paint them back but housing is constantly changing rules.
Thank you for sharing this info. I would like to know if it’s comfortable and doable to live in the base without owning a car? Does Uber work well in Japan? Do you need a car to be comfortable at the base during the day to day life?
Hi! Your video was really helpful :) I found out I’ll be PCS’ing there soon too! I’m an E4 and my bf and dog would be coming with me (he’s just separated from AD so now a civilian) by any chance do you know if they will be able to live with me if I’m on base?
I'm not 100% sure so I would contact the housing office in Misawa. If he had a job on base it would be a lot easier for him to enter base and potentially live with you on base. But if he doesn't have a job or a way to get on base without you it would be very difficult!
Do you see any people who own motorcycles at the housing you are at? I'm hoping to bring mine but have no clue if there would even be a place to put it.
Yes! There are few people on our street who own motorcycles. Each H-Style house gets two parking spots and there's also guest parking on each street. If you live in a tower there are no assigned parking spots so that shouldn't be an issue. :)

Hello from a fellow north baser! Watched your vids before I arrived in Misawa and it’s super cool to see this now that I am all settled in!!!
That's awesome! Say hello if you ever see us walking around North Base! :)

I know it sure would be nice to be able to walk everywhere! And I'm glad we can help! :)

That sounds AWFUL. We're very grateful to have a renovated H-Style! I know others are not so lucky. :(

Thanks for the tour. I kept wondering about the need for a/c, in the 70's there was no need for a/c, so thanks for the explanation.
It's crazy how much has changed! I couldn't imagine living here without AC! We run our AC from May to November haha!
@@mattanddags OMG I arrived in Misawa mid April and had just brought a sweater, I froze. Then it began snowing around the first of November! At least then I had all my stuff.
We just got orders to Misawa and its a huge bummer about off base housing.. But probably better for the cats with how strict they are about things.
They just changed the rules for off-base housing! Now families get to live off base and single airmen have to live on base.
Beautiful home, I feel like I’ve been there before
Only thing I hated about Misawa were the earthquakes, especially in the towers.
Yes! We're glad we don't live in the towers.
North Base used to just be called the Hill and that's where all the 'security' people worked...used to bus/drive there from main base....Is the ski lodge still up there near north base?
Yes! The ski lodge is still there and gets used. :)

I’m Japanese by the way!!
I'm planning to visit to Misawa this winter🤍🤍🤍🤍
Thank you! Misawa is beautiful in the winter!
hi nice meeting you. keep n vlogging. izakaya yume at misawa

I couldn't imagine! We'd rather live off base but we still feel lucky to have gotten a decent place on base.

Hey, I’ll be getting stationed there in the near future, do you know if single E4 airmen stay off base or in the dorms?
Single E4's can live off base. :)
Now do the townhouses in Misawa
The houses were so different in every area
Yeah they are!
Are you allowed to paint the walls and if so, do you have to paint them back to its original color before leaving?
You are allowed to paint the walls, you just have to get it approved by housing before painting. And as of now, you don't have to paint them back but housing is constantly changing rules.
What's the deal with hanging/mounting things on the walls? Do they still advise against it due to asbestos?
They've never told us not to but we're still careful when we drill into the wall.
Were you able to ship your vehicle there?
Hi! Thank you for sharing on base housing! We will move to Misawa soon. I have a kid. Do you think we live 2BR? Can we choose tower or town house?
I think they are sending families off base now but you might have the option to stay on base in a 2 bedroom tower or town house.
@@mattanddagsThank you so much 😊
Thank you for sharing this info. I would like to know if it’s comfortable and doable to live in the base without owning a car? Does Uber work well in Japan? Do you need a car to be comfortable at the base during the day to day life?
Hello! Sadly there is no Uber in Misawa. Personally, I don't think it's possible to live here without a car, especially if you live on North Base.
@@mattanddags thank you for your answer, good to know, very helpful

Do these homes have air conditioning? I heard the towers dont just wondering if these do
Most of North Base (towers and houses) have AC! A lot of Main Base doesn't have AC but they're currently renovating a lot of them.
Do you see any people who own motorcycles at the housing you are at? I'm hoping to bring mine but have no clue if there would even be a place to put it.

@@mattanddags Thank you so much! I'll be moving there next winter so I'm trying to get as much info as I can!
What rank is this housing for?
Hey to get this type of house, can you get it as a enlisted or is it just for officers ?
Enlisted! It mainly just depends on the size of your family.
Do families live on base? Singles off base ? Thank you
If you are married or have children you are required to live on base. If you are a single E4 or above you are allowed to live off base.
may i ask gow much for the housing rent
We live on Misawa Air Base so the U.S. military pays for the housing. :)
