Thank you for this tutorial! I changed the default location via the Windows 11 settings but that created two locations and some programs would store screenshots in the Pictures folder on C and others in the pictures folder on the D drive. Now all screenshots are saved on D :)
the move button as well as the other two options arent displaying when i go to location in properties. I just bought this laptop and I am not tech savvy at all. I tried following the instructions on microsoft but it's way too complex and confusing for me. Should I go to an IT expert? What should i do?-+
Thanks, Jamie; clear and concise. I don't know if this is a Microsoft thing or a custom builder issue; I had my computer custom-built, but all of my photo, document, video, etc. files defaulted to the Microsoft One Drive! Ex: C:\Users\UserName\OneDrive\Documents and etc. On a new machine with a fresh install, the OneDrive is not set up yet, or the user is blocked from changing this for some unknown reason. Nothing short of a regedit to restore the location to %USERPROFILE% will get control back to the user to do what you did here. Fortunately, Microsoft doesn't hide this information, and if you search for the error you get when trying to do what you say here, Microsoft does have a help page, easy to find and not for the faint of heart, to edit the registry and fix the problem so your method works. I'll say up front; do not just delete OneDrive and go that route, or delete and try redirecting afterward. That's a death knell. Losing my Desktop and other %USERPROFILE% folders/files was not fun. Fortunately, I have a good repair tool. For anyone curious and familiar with the registry, here is the location in the registry where %USERPROFILE% is used. Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders. And for newbies to the registry: WARNING! HERE BE DRAGONS! Know what you're doing before you attempt this. 🙂 Thanks again, Jamie. If you don't already have one, you might want a video of fixing that side of the problem. TH-cam is a great source, and this is an excellent video! And here is that Microsoft Help to fix it, so a user can use your video in the future, if they buy a machine defaulting to OneDrive: support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/operation-to-change-a-personal-folder-location-fails-in-windows-ffb95139-6dbb-821d-27ec-62c9aaccd720 I think for some people using OneDrive or some other as a backup solution is great, for those who want to go that route; but, for most of us, especially the new machines using SSD drives; we don't care to incur the extra expense. For forcing this on people, Microsoft gets a well deserved shaming.
yeah thanks for the comment, this can be really confusing to people way more than they want to get into, I do feel like Microsoft does kind of push one drive on us, I know this because this happened to me after installing a fresh copy. But yeah I hope my video lives on to help others out! Have a good one!👍
Hi, so, according to your filing system (year by year), when you want to create a new destination for, say, 2025 music files, do you go back to 2024 music folder and change its location again? If so, then, wouldnt that remove 2024 music folder all together and move to 2025 and kindda beat its purpose in the first place?

No matter what I click on I never get the option to where it shows "location". I am trying to move my Apple folder backup which is under C:\users\my name\apple.
I am unable to restore the pictures folder to C Drive again , its basically giving this type of error - "Failed to build subdirections under "E / System Volume Information" . Accessis denied ."
@@Naz1970-e9j It means you arent clicking on an official Users Shell Folder; you can only move Users Shell Folders this way. Documents, Music, Videos, Pictures, Favorites, etc..
If my windows damage and i format only windows particion the new windows installation will be redirect or do i have to configure one by one again kind boring.
Im just learning this, but from what i saw, i think, you should redo all again. I would make your windows backup image with acronis after you finish installing all updates, apps and other settings. Works for me. But im looking to redirect alluser data and programs and registry if it possible without having a server
I already follow your instruction with the other video, but for some reason after i stop backup with one drive, i can't access the location tab of my folder 😢
What this TH-camr failed to address is the reason why your location tab is missing. When Microsoft OneDrive, Windows 11’s cloud syncing app that is preloaded, is running, whether it is in use or not, it prevents the location tab from showing up. If you are willing to delete OneDrvie, after rebooting your computer the location tabs will return.

Misleading video title. Anyone can do what you showed in the video. When people see the title of the video they are interested in relocating the complete USER folder to another drive so that they for instance don't have to backup all games saves and other saves before they (re) install Windows. Clickbait title...
I did not title this to be click bate. So I apologize If you feel it should be titled something else then please suggest it to me and I will consider changing it,

I use to do the music folder and move all the music to the new year but I don't do that anymore. I just use TH-cam music
Quick question, do the files work like they would in C drive? as it would be stored in another place but work completely fine
Yes
thank u bro that was great

Try clicking on the root folder, make sure it's not a shortcut

I'm not sure what is causing the issue, but have you tried running it as administrator?
What if you dont see the location tab?
Yeah i don't see a locations tab either

Could I do the same for the OneDrive folder
If i click quick acess tabs if take to my new location drive or do i have to go all the time manually inside d drive 2023 etc to acess files ?
it should use the relocated folders. I do this every time on a new Windows install for the Downloads folder!

what if oyu wanna undo it but the location option isn't present anymore? what happens? thanks!
Yes you can undo it easily, you have to make sure you right click on the actual root folder to get the location tab back again
How about moving the document folder?
you do exactly the same! (i did it for all my folders)
