I bought this today, and I am EXTREMELY satisfied. The build quality isn't that bad, and the reception on both bands is AMAZING, especially at night. My only complaint is the mono output through the headphone jack. I mean, I don't mind mono, but when I plug in most headphones it only comes through the left ear. I would have appreciated that the mono output at least be send to both channels. Oh well, it's just something minor. Fantastic radio for a very good price.

I've had one of these for many years and got it at a clearance sale for $4.99. It's performed flawlessly and has superb AM reception. This radio pulls in stations better than some much more expensive radios. Superb performer.

I own one. I love it. The dial is not calibrated in any practical way. Tuning is very critical, so you have to tune carefully. The external antenna extends and swings in an arc, but does not swivel. You may not be able to get best reception on FM without turning the entire radio. The AM antenna is an internal ferrite rod similar to many other radios and you will have to turn the radio to maximize your received signal or null out an interfering signal. The battery cover comes loose when open so you have to be careful not to lose it or break it. Once again, I love mine and it does its job!

This little radio is just like the transistor radios in the 1960's. Eleven dollars and change. This would have cost about a dollar in 1961! It is made in China but Sony seems to watch them closely as the quality is very good! Fine fit-finish etc.,it
has a tuning light that glows when you are on station.
Now the good part: Reception. Un-aided [ no external antenna] this radio is impressive!
That tuning light is on all the time at night. There is an AM station at every position of the dial!

This radio is totally old school and really rocks for the price. I've had them for about 5 years now and they work fine. Reception is good, sound is adequate and is a good to take just about anywhere.

@Dronston The tuning indicator LED seems to stay on a lot of you are quickly scanning through the stations, but I think that is because I have a lot of stations available. When you cycle through slowly you will see it go on and off depending on the strength of the signal.
I am looking forward to reviewing the Etón. Having the renewable energy of the crank will be nice, but I want to make sure that 1) the crank doesn't break & 2) the cranking doesn't take more energy than it's worth.

This is an absolutely GREAT radio. I have the SONY ICF-S10 an been using it for years. I have taken it hammock camping. What I use it mostly for now is when I go juggling in the parks for tunes. The nice feature is that long wrist loop. You can use it to hang the radio from all kinds of thing. When I juggle in the parks I hang it from chain link fences a lot.

I bought one of these things in January '03 for a security job I was working at the time. Just found it in its box in pretty much factory new shape. Looking at this review, it would seem they haven't changed the design in the slightest, except that mine is black, although I'm fairly certain grey was an option back when I purchased it as well.

The only "con" for this radio is that it is only AM/FM ! Get a radio with the NOAA Weather Band ! The AM/FM/WB radio I have is from La Crosse 810-805 that uses three "AA" batteries. And Lithium batteries are better for Winter cold weather operation. The radio has a LED light, external power and an ear phone jack to extend battery life. You can extend the range of the AM radio by adding long wire antenna or build a "Loop Antenna" from a TH-cam video. I have seen the radio at Sportsman Warehouse and at Target stores. And have carried this radio for over a year for my EDC Go Bag/Get Home Bag or 72 Hour Bag. Thank you for the video ! tjl

So why is the tuning led always burning? I think you will like the eton better. (sure, different prices) Obviously the hand cranking is a feature you just can't beat, no matter how cheap the sony is.
I have a Etón FR-350 for emergency/black out situations. A lot bulkier than your eton but it has short wave (world receiver) and is water resistant. (and light and charging options) It has an annoying alarm mode (loud) whitch switches on too easily, not a good thing when trying to avoid attention.

SHORTWAVE ! If an emergency happens i want all options and overseas or distant stations might not be effected.
    so....smaller...more options....thats my 2 cents...thanks for the vids.

I keep mine in a plastic bag to keep it clean and to keep the dirt out of the tuner and volume control. It's a tough little bugger as I have dropped it several times with no damage (just lucky??). Mine got dirt in the volume control and it got very scratchy and difficult to smoothly change volume level............so...... using my tiny screwdriver set I removed one screw in the battery compartment and slowly and carefully pried open the back. If one is careful, the volume knob can then be removed undoing one screw. The small, white plastic disk which covers the innards of the volume control is thus exposed. Squirt and little rubbing alcohol in there, twist the control back and forth and blow it out with compressed air or just blow on it. Do this 2 or 3 times. Voila !!! the dirt gets washed out and the little sucker sounds brand new again !!!! Caution: do not move the station index (pink strip) or change the station while working on it or the index will not line up with the correct station when reassembled. It is and ideal emergency radio and so cheap that it could be used as a trade item or gift when times get weird.
Pair this up with a small solar charging set-up for the required batteries.
