    The only thing missing which would have knocked the nostalgia up a few more notches is the sound of fish-plate joints under the wheels...
    Lovely vid. Thanks

      Hi Peter, thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the video.
      I mentioned in the description as to why the footage stopped:
      "Unfortunately the battery ran out just as we were pulling into Portsmouth Harbour so that's why it ends slightly early."
      I've now got a bigger battery pack which will hopefully make future videos a little more stable.

    Of all our steam locomotives I think this class has to be my favourite. Yes it was common and produced in high numbers but there was a really good reason for that, thank goodness some were preserved so that the likes of my Grandchildren can have the thrill of steam. Great video, excellent quality and inspired placing of the camera, thank you.

    Seeing railway staff take pictures and be in awe as well, that to me is extraordinary. I remember when I first went to a station to see a heritage unit pass through, the platform staff didn't have a clue it was coming. Luckily, they know me enough to know that I'm not going to just jump on a train without paying. It came through, there wasn't many others watching but a handful. Nowadays, I think - and hope - that the communication is a bit better ! I don't think I've ever seen Petersfield as busy as that in daytime, or ever!

    This is a real good place to put a camera....for a 1st class steam engine train ride. Lovely countryside scenery.
    Still feels very windy / blowy; in which cuts out the sounds of the steam train engine...from time 2 time. Especially the whistling effect.
    but nevertheless....excellent video footage. Even better than some of the other train cab rides I’ve been on. Some train cab windscreens get dirty. But this camera ( Go pro ) was placed outside. Even better!
    I seem to like this steam train video very much. 👍👌 anymore like this?

      Hi Peter, many thanks for your kind response to this video. Regarding the wind noise, due to completing a couple of other videos like this, I have now made a small black plastic box to place the microphone into which will hopefully cut out the sound of the wind but still pick up the noise from the loco. The only issue I’ve had with this is COVID as it hasn’t allowed me to try it out so fingers crossed it will settle soon & I can see if the box works.

    Very enjoyable, well done. I couldn't detect any vibration or movement of the camera relative to the engine. How & where did you secure it?

    • @Shoddy127
      @Shoddy127  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris, many thanks for enjoying the video and your kind comment.
      The GoPro is secured inside a small plastic case and is connected to and fixed into position by a magnet, which sticks to the running board of the engine. The camera settings on the GoPro are already set up to remove any shaking whilst videoing and it clearly does the job well as the footage shows. The sound is picked up by an external mic that is connected to the GoPro.
      Further sound testing will be carried out on future runs to see if I can improve the sound when the loco is running fast and all being well remove any wind interference by placing the microphone into a small black box. I can only do this when we can haul tours again. Fingers crossed that will be in the short term and not long term!

    How did you get permission to film this kind of video and how did you manage to get the gopro to stay in one place without moving about and falling on it's side or even fall off.

    • @Shoddy127
      @Shoddy127  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David, the GoPro is attached to a stand that has a magnet fixed to the bottom of it so it sticks to the running board of the engine. I'm a support crew member and have always wondered how this would work so I ensure the camera is fixed into a sensible position where it isn't (fingers crossed!) going to get knocked off but provide a good view of the line ahead.
      When I place the camera onto the loco its always done in a safe position so it doesn't interfere with the footplate crew's vision and also check to see if they are happy with me placing the camera into position to film.

    • @Shoddy127
      @Shoddy127  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi pmjd42, thanks for your comment. The rattling noise is the loco snifting valve working when the engine is coasting or not applying power. This link explains how it works:
