- Pittsburgh Pirates 2 at Baltimore Orioles 1, F -- With four 20-game winners and a powerful lineup featuring Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson and Boog Powell, the Orioles were expected to dominate. But with the help of a Roberto Clemente home run in the fourth, and a Willie Stargell run in the eighth, Pirates starter Steve Blass went the distance for the World Series champion Pirates.

What a blessing that we have this entire broadcast for baseball fans of every generation to see.
Blessing indeed! I'd never seen it before and was on the edge of my seat. Clemente, Stargell and the Robinsons are true immortals. Blass must have jumped 5 feet in the air when the game ended!
This was half a century ago, and all the heroes of my youth have either grown old or are no longer with us. All except my greatest boyhood hero: Roberto Clemente. He did not grow old. Nor did the years condemn. We know him today as he was. And he will be forever young.

Roberto Clemente was my granfather's cousin. They both grew up together in Carolina, PR. I was born in October of 1973 so i never experienced the greatness of Roberto in real time. I have always been very proud of the kind of human being he was. Thank you so much for this upload.
Saw him play many times also visited Roberto Clemente Museum here in Pittsburgh. I was born in June of 1955.

It was the last game Frank played as an Oriole.

Roberto Clemente was my favorite baseball player growing up. I always had to have my Roberto Clemente signed Louisville Slugger baseball bat whenever I played baseball with the kids in the neighborhood
Mr. Clemente's homer from 51:40 on is the sweetest hit in this World Series during an era where the Fall Classic was being played in the daytime.
Steve Blass is a wonderful person! And of course he was one heck of a ball player in his day!

Even the Orioles fans clapped for him. Back then any player made an outstanding play even opposition players, the fans gave them a hand. Rarely booed, even a player that killed your team.(Yankee fans & Phillie fan were the exception). But I still appreciate a great play & player. Old school!

What a treat to watch this game. I'm a Detroit TIgers fan but I have always been a Roberto Clemente fan and I have always been a fan of Steve Blass, what a nice man. This game featured a lot of familiar players and what a fun game to watch, played in Baltimore's historic stadium. I loved the announcers too. What professionals.
Was at that game as a 7 year old 1st Base Upper, which would have been Sec 32-35, not a sellout Pirate fans the son came out after the last out.
Glad that I was able to see the great Roberto Clemente in action. I have to say that as an all-around ballplayer and human being, I don't think there's been anyone better than Roberto! The world could use more men like Roberto Clemente!

The left field bleachers were the cheapest. I grew up there, too.
65 Cents for children every game. $1.00 for adults. You're right about the Knothole Gang, we were usually out in right field, 2nd level if a big crowd.
We would sit in the left field bleachers for $.50! On the hottest days, you got the best seats because you cooked out there. At the 7th inning stretch, they would open the door between the bleachers and the stadium proper. Of course, we would race around to right filed to see our hero, Roberto. The best games were when there was a rain delay or the Pirates were way ahead (or way behind), then we could sneak into the box seat areas.
Dale Murphy was a great ballplayer & a humble man. he didn't have that ego, like many of them had & have.

I was only 10 when this game was played the first world series I followed rooted for the pirates because my grand parents may the rip lived in pittsburgh or near there.
The Baltimore Orioles of 1966, 1969, 1970, and 1971 were one of the greatest teams in Baseball history. They were upset by the New York Mets in 69 and by the Pirates in 71. The Mets had great pitching and deserved to win. The Pirates were led by Roberto Clemente who showed why he was the greatest baseball player I ever saw.
I was 13 when I saw this series, Indeed at the time I hated the Orioles because I was a Tiger fan at that time the Tigers and Orioles were in the AL east. every time they came to Detroit they would beat the Tigers, except in 68 but even in the 80's the Orioles had great teams The Tigers finished 83 right on their tails no pun intended bu even in the 80's the Orioles had great teams too, So what Oriole team do you think is better the 66- 70 team or the 83 team? The Pirates also beat the Orioles in 79 as well. I grew to appreciate them however when I got a bit older. Always liked their uniforms very sharp.

At least they won two championships. They also won another one in 1983. The Atlanta Braves went to five World Series in one decade (1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1999) and only won it once (1995). They haven't been to a World Series since.

I was a 6 yr boy at this game, my dad took me to 7 pitt games to see Roberto Clemente. I remember him saying a cpl times that i'd be witnessing the greatest baseball player of all time. No one expected him to pass so soon R.C. was a great human being !

In October of '71 I was a young 13 yr old experiencing Jr Hi School for the first time and I LOVED Baseball. I watched game 7 on a Sunday afternoon on a black n' white TV. This brings back memories......
So did I. It was a b+w 13" TV in the front room if my parents house. The bigger TV in the back room could not receive it.
I was also the only one who watched it. Mom, who was a huge Pirate fan, and Dad took the rest of the family somewhere that I do not remember.
What an incredible treat to hear Orioles PA announcer Bill Bolling. One of the great voices to anounce the players, he was as good, if not better, than the more acclaimed Bob Sheppard (PA announcer for the Yankees and Giants). I would go to a many Oriole games just to hear him announcer the players. I remember telling Rex Barney, who replaced Bolling, how disappointing it was hearing his voice and not Bolling's. RIP Bill, forever missed.

What a beautiful baseball game, both in way it was played and the way it was broadcast. Pitchers working quickly, expecting to go nine innings. Minimal chatter by the announcers, letting the sounds of the game tell the story. Just a pleasant afternoon at the ballpark, which just happened to be the seventh game of the World Series.
So much has changed, hey?

How heartbreaking to think in a little over a year Roberto Clemente would die. What a heroic man.
Several of these players on both teams were well on their way to legendary and Hall of Fame careers. It's fun watching these again. Boog Powell was a mountain of a man. That one foul ball was a mammoth shot.
This world series gave the baseball world the opportunity to see what a formidable player Roberto Clemente was in his day... he went on to win MVP of the series... keep in mind that he was 37 years old at the time, the announcer makes note of what great shape he's in and that "he could play for another 2 or 3 years at least..." barring any injury.
When I am asked where I want to go I usually say "the 70s'". Baseball like this was great.
I wish the Pirates still had those uniforms.
I watched the entire series, back in the day, and while I was an Expos fan I also rooted for the Pirates. First game I ever saw live was Pittsburgh-Montreal in 1971. Came away loving guys like Stargell, Blass, Sanguillen and of course, Roberto Clemente. :D

My first Expos game was a double-header with the Pirates at Jarry Park in 76. Bombo Rivera hit an inside-the-park grand slam for the 'spos but I think the Pirates took both games. Like you I grew up cheering for the Expos throughout the 70s and 80s, and also had a soft spot for the Bucs. Good times!

I was a huge Pirate fan at the time. I remember running home from the bus stop to catch the playoffs and WS games. I really liked this Orioles team also.
It's amazing how quick the pace is compared to today. The batters get in the box ready to hit, and the pitchers get on the mound, ready to deliver the ball. None of the constant stepping out of the box, and fiddling around on the mound that causes games today to last forever.
The first MLB game I ever attended was a Baltimore-Detroit game at Tiger Stadium in 1972. It was an NBC Game of the Week. Detroit won 2-0. It lasted less than two hours. There's a very brief clip of it somewhere on TH-cam.

Roberto played with severe neck pain most of his career. If he would have been 100% healthy, his statistics would have been even more amazing. A real life hero !
I remember this game. The whole Series. Pirates fought back. Roberto was fabulous as always. It's such a shame he only had 1 more season. But at 37 yrs old he played like a much younger man. I don't know why I thought Blass threw a 3 hitter in this game,but it was his previous start he did that.(As one gets old the memory isnt as sharp as it once was). It was so great to watch this game again. I didn't realise Manny had such a great Series too.(I remember him getting the game winning hit in 1979,though,& him saying "That was for Roberto!") For Pirates fans we've waited a long time, for another WS championship. You never know . I miss Roberto, & still say he's the greatest I've ever seen. Nothing against Aaron, Mays, or Mantle,but (well you saw a 37 yr old Clemente, he'd lost nothing, most players are in decline at that age, not Roberto). Plus a hit in all 14 WS games he played, the man was amazing. On & off the field. This brought back great memories. Go Bucs!
The Orioles were my heros back in the 70's and 80's. I was 11 back when the Pirates beat the birds and after Merv Rettenmund grounded out to end the game....this 11- year old cried his eyes out!
That is a cute story. I wonder if any little kids still get that invested in the game. It sure is a different world today.

Watching game #7 on TH-cam. Classic matchup in pitchers. Cuellar vs. Blass. Refreshing the pace of the game. When Baseball was good. Lifetime Orioles fan. Pirates and Roberto Clemente summed up in 1 word. Class.
Nobody stepping out of the batters box to adjust a batting glove with each pitch. Oh, that's right, there were no batting gloves!
Also notice how many batters swung at the first pitch.

I always remember his name as a young baseball fan that day and my dad taking me to Fenway Park and he was there for games there too. What a great unique name. Nestor.

Roberto Clemente may very well be the greatest baseball player of all time. Hitting fielding and speed. He had it all. Saw him play in person and was awed by his ability.

This was baseball at its finest back in the day! Led by the great one Clemente the Pirates took the series from Baltimore and the two Robinsons...and what a display both offensively and defensively Roberto put on to confirm his status as one of the all time greats. Vive Clemente!!!

As a kid living in Pittsburgh, I became a sports fan that very year, 1971. First a Pirates fan, then the next year I became a Steelers fan. The 70s really spoiled me. Two World Series championships and four Super Bowl championships. In 1979 both teams won championships. Doubt that Pittsburgh will ever see that again, at least in my lifetime.

My first recollection of a world series. Day time World Series were great. Great for the fans and the players. We all have more energy during the afternoon. I know many players /fans don't appreciate having to play at night
If I remember right tbis was the first Series with night games, on week days. I was really happy as before this all the games were day games. I was in school & couldn't watch. Now all the games are night games.
Wow! What a blast from the past this is !! I just stubbled upon this video and it brought back some AMAZING memories for me! I was a 9yr kid at the time (from Greensburg) and a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE Pirate fan as was my Grandmother. I will never, ever forget that she took me (by train) to a Pirate game that year (1971). We were 2hrs early to Three Rivers stadium..... as she and I were walking towards the stadium, we had stopped at a cross-walk and then a BRIGHT YELLOW 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner SUPERBIRD came around corner real slow coming right in front of us. It was BOB PRINCE himself driving that fabulous car! He tapped the horn (Roadrunner BEEP! BEEP!) and then reached out the window and gave us both a very warm greeting !! I will cherish that memory of forever! What a day memories I have of my Grandmother and those 70s Pirates! My Grandmother would sit and listen to ALL the Pirate games on her tiny transistor radio......
Great post. I was a 9 year old living in Uniontown. My cousins lived in Baltimore.
I remember us calling them up and ribbing them after the game. The following year I seen Clemente's 3000 hit it person vs John Matlock of the Mets. Never forget it.

What a great World Series that must have been, I enjoyed watching snippets of this game. Steve Blass shut the door on the biggest stage and it's inexplicable to me what happened to him later. He had a huge 1972 and then couldn't throw a strike in 1973. Hard to reconcile the incredible mental strength you see in this video with the mess of two years later. Baseball's a cruel game.

The Orioles came to Japan a week later and played 18 games against Japanese teams in one month.I don't remember because I was a baby, but thank you for being tired.

Thank you for uploading. This is awesome. Seeing the early days of THE LUMBER COMPANY is so cool. The Pirates were the best team of the decade of the 70s. Stargell, Clemente, Oliver, Sanguillen, etc... and pitcher Steve Blass, one of the classiest men to ever be part of this great sport.
The Reds have to be considered the best NL team of the 1970s. they went to WS in 70 and 72, won WS in 75 and 76. Pirates beat orioles in 71 and 79, both in 7 games. Orioles arguably had the better team in 71. hose Red teams were more dominant in mid 70s.

@@loyaldude10 I am a Pirates fan and would have to agree with you that between the Reds and the Pirates, the Reds had a better decade in the 70s. I was glad when the Bucs beat the Reds in 1979. I hated the Reds back then! I think it might be fair to say the Pirates were the best team in the NL East in the 70s. Won the division 6 times (70, 71, 72, 74, 75, & 79).
I am more than ten years younger than this game and I still love it.

The beauty of the World Series back in those days was that it was sometimes won by the hot team in a short series not necessarily by the best team over the course of a long 162 game schedule over the course of six months .

Great players, imagine the amount of money some of these players would command in this day and age. Clemente, Palmer, Robinson, etc.

Maybe, maybe not. Remember way more Americans played baseball back then, including inner city black kids who now mostly play basketball. Players in the 1960s and 1970s might not hit the weights, but they're probably more skilled.
Ben Moore Good theory, but it doesn't pass the eye test. The players today are way better, not just in terms of size, but also skill.
Agree about some of the physical changes in general over the years, but I have no doubt superstars like Clemente and Robinson would be equally great today. Because pitchers are throwing harder, it actually helps batters when they make mistakes. Also, many of today's stadiums have smaller fields, also helping the offense.

Yes, but the plane crashed in Puerto Rico's northern shore (Atlantic Ocean), just minutes after taking off from the Puerto Rico International Airport, which is located - ironically enough- in Clemente's hometown of Carolina, just west of San Juan. The plane was headed to Nicaragua, so it would go nowhere near the Gulf of Mexico.

what's very sad is that watching this series along with the 60 and 79 series it's the closest pirates fans will ever come to seeing the pirates in the world series.

I love this video. I was living in Spangdahlem, Germany on an air force base. I think this might have been the first world series that was broadcast live there via satellite. What a treat that was. In Germany it was about 11 or 12 at night at then end of the game. Every single kid who played little league on base watched every single one of these games. It was such a pleasure to see it. Instantly, our heroes were Blass, Sanguillen, Clemente, and it didn't matter who won. We also became fans of Frank and Brooks Robinson, Boog Powell, etc. My parents and I are from Minneapolis, so I am a Twins fan, but this World Series to me is right up there with the two my Twins won.

Watching games like this from when I first fell in love with baseball as a 9 year old makes me hate today’s game even more
The Pirates in their own division faced 20 game winners of Seaver, Carlton, and Jenkins. Thats not mentioning Gibson, Koosman, Wise, Bill Stoneman, and Milt Pappas who won over 15 games that year.
I would agree that the early 1970s were the era of the pitcher in Major League Baseball with all those fine hurlers on the mound.
