  • You can drive around it either way and it's put Swindon on the map. Recorded on a Swindon Town Football Club matchday (hence the police presence).
    One for all you roundaphiles!

I agree with Lord Moredon, more or less. This video illustrates the principle, but the driver made the mistake of following some 'scaredy custard' drivers and hadn't taken the time to learn to 'do' it properly and use all (3 or 4) lanes available at each circle.
I discovered this roundabout in 1980 when we moved there and soon realised that if the traffic 'locks' on one route, you just have to take a different route and it not only gets you ahead but unlocks it for everyone else.
But I agree - you either love it or hate it.
Those who hate it avoid it - reducing the volume of traffic - job done! [last part only joking!]

In the pre-industrial era, horses kept to the left so riders could draw their sword (as most people are right handed)
Napoleon changed Europe to the right (as he was left handed)
    The US followed France
But British influenced India, Pakistan, Australia and the Republic of Ireland

@@dumpit3583 You say that, but we drive the vehicles (car, bus, trucks) on the right side, the correct side to operate a vehicle. So could argue it is you who drives down the wrong side of the road for operating a vehicle on the wrong side.

its a brilliant junction controlling 5 major roads, i have lived locally all my life and never once seen an accident there, neither have i seen any major delays, not even on match days. The main problem is drivers like the one that filmed this, navigating it in the wrong lane EVERY time just for effect is what causes accidents.

The records of their roundabout are very convincing. It has a higher throughput of cars per day so there is less congestions. The number of accidents and their severity is much lower than on regular crossings and the cars spend less time on the lanes of the roundabout than on regular roundabouts as you can take shortcuts- that's what the smaller roundabouts are for.

It's easier than it first appears, though a lot of people find it scary because they don't understand how it works. I'm sure there have been a lot of accidents though I think people give each other a little more tolerance because of the unique layout.
Most roundabouts now have a curve before the entry so you are guided in the correct direction. I drove straight onto roundabouts in France the first few times I drove there. The village ones are the worst! : )
