Hagler used to isolate himself at the very tip of Cape Cod (near his hometown Brockton, Massachusetts) in a remote beach hotel. He would wake up at 3 AM every morning and do sprints on the beach at Cape Cod in heavy combat boots- half of it running backwards. Sprints are a great way to build up your endurance and body. Sprinters maximally contract their muscles, which requires a lot more work than a slow, staggered, constant run. Not to mention, your testosterone and hormones are released in greater amounts with short maximal energy bursts.
During the winter, it was said to be one of the coldest places on Earth due to the heavy wind. Marvin would actually be screaming due to the pain of the cold and the pain in his legs and lungs. Then he went into "solitary" till six in the evening. At six, he went to the gym they'd set up alongside the pool at a hotel nearby. Your body tends to burn even more calories in the cold, as your energy expenditure increases. Therefore, this could be part of the reason why Hagler was extremely lean.
There, they would perform a circuit of jumping rope, heavybag, speedbag, and situps (where they'd do several rounds each), but one strict rule was adhered to: three minutes work, one minute rest, for all of it. This mimics that of a typical boxing match and will get Hagler ready for his matches.
After that they would do their sparring routine. Marvin had to have several sparring partners in camp with him because he used them up with such regularity. "Marvin don't ease up on you," said longtime sparring partner and world champion Buster Drayton. There's no play when it comes to Marvelous Marvin; "he comes to work". This is another great way to get him ready for his matches.
Marvin would spar with three to four sparring partners, where he went two rounds each before moving on to the next fresh partner. This dramatically improved his conditioning and taught him to remain in great position even while he was tired. Drayton also said that his sparring partners would leave the ring with the insides of their mouths so chewed up from Hagler's blows that they couldn't even eat dinner that night.
After that, he would rest, eat, and watch film of himself and his opponents. The workouts were open to the public, so he'd remove his gear, toss a nod to the audience, and return to the self-imposed solitary confinement. Those working with him in camp have said that he wouldn't even socialize, because he wanted to remain so focused on his goals. He stayed in his room, and could be seen frequently sitting alone on his balcony staring out at the Cape water for long periods at a time. Marvin made sure that he worked out 7 days a week and got atleast 100 rounds of sparring in every week, but most importantly, he was always fast asleep by 8 PM to get his 7 hours before his 3 AM run.

Both Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler are from Brockton. Hagler heard a lot about Marciano's work-ethic and determination from Goody Petronelli. Who is Goody Petronelli? He was born in Brockton, Massachusetts and grew up as a close friend of Rocky Marciano. Both their fathers had emigrated from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Petronelli was also a friend of Marciano's trainer, Allie Colombo.
The Petronelli brothers opened their Brockton gym in 1969, the same year both Marciano and Colombo died (in a plane crash and an auto accident respectively.) Guerino "Goody" Petronelli with his brother Pasquale, managed and trained world middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
Marvin knew so much about Rocky. Notice the similarities. Their daily year-round workouts and the solitaire confinement with little interaction. What I'm trying to say is Hagler adopted a lot of Marciano's monk like training methods and it paid off tremendously.

🏃Rocky ran at least 5 miles a day, 365, with several pounds of sand built into each leather combat boot designed by a local shoe mogul. When a fight was signed he'd run 8 to 10 miles, and usually the last week up it to 12 miles. He said, "if you train like i do, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." Rocky would also include running uphill forward, downhill backwards, repeat. I remember reading that quote several decades ago. Then out of nowhere i recently stumbled across an isolated vid and Rocky said, "this is where the road work pays off. If your up at the bust of dawn everyday while your training, running up and down hill, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." On top of that Rocky liked to walk another 5 to 10 miles in the late afternoon or evening. And he did all this in the hilly country around Grossinger's, where he trained. It was Rocky's obsession with conditioning that kept him training 365 days a year and this dedication gave him stamina never seen before in a fighter. It allowed him to set a blistering pace that no opponent could match🏃

@Senior David M Anderson that was enthralling reading , my late fathers hero Rocky Marciano and in later life Marvelous Marvin too who we used to watch together saturdays on a small black n white set in the kitchen , fond memories indeed , I never knew just how much dedicated training these 2 guys went through to get to the top , for my money the plane always seemed a bit iffy , I knew about the mafia connections etc etc and then you tell me his trainer also died the same year? Wow was that a genuine accident? I know it’s a long time ago now , hagler dieing last year from complications of the COVID jab actually bought me to tears, I was so mad and sad at the same time that all the wars that he fought in the ring and the fact that he was retired and enjoying life and then an injection that was supposed to protect you kills you - absolutely crushing news

@clark kent I was born and raised in Newton, Iowa. This is a synopsis explaining how Rocky perished in my hometown:
Aug. 31, 1969, the eve of his 46th birthday, few recall that Marciano perished in a plane crash near Newton that also claimed the lives of two men from Des Moines: pilot Glenn Belz, 37, and family friend, Frankie Farrell, 22.
Marciano, Belz and Farrell were aboard a 1967 Cessna 172-H when they left Chicago's Midway Airport on Aug. 31 at 5:58 p.m., “despite warnings of stormy weather on their flight path,” The trio was headed to Des Moines where Farrell, a former Dowling High School sports star, was opening an insurance business and the former champ was slated to make an appearance. Farrell’s father, Lew, a former boxer in Des Moines, had known Marciano since his childhood. The Rock planned to return to his Florida home on the morning of Sept. 1 to celebrate his birthday that day with his family.
Sadly, he never made it home alive.
At 8:50 p.m. Belz, with Marciano sitting alongside him at the front of the Cessna, contacted air traffic control at Des Moines Airport to say he was in the area but could not see the city because of the cloudy and drizzly conditions.
It was nighttime and Newton was experiencing bad weather. The pilot - who had logged in 231 total hours of flying time, with only 35 at night, and had no instrument rating - asked for a radar position “fix” before announcing that he could see the lights of Newton and that he would land there to refuel.
At 9:05 p.m. the Cessna descended and hit an oak tree in the middle of a pasture about two miles southwest of Newton Airport. The impact ripped off one of the wings and sent the now out of control and disintegrating plane bouncing across farmland for nearly 250ft before it came to rest in a creek bed.
Colleen Swarts, who lived near the crash site then told reporters that she heard the plane “sputtering” overhead, adding: “It sort of stopped right over our house and i was scared to death it would fall on us. I could see the lights on the plane. It sort of drifted away and I heard an awful thud. I knew what had happened."
Another eyewitness, who remained anonymous, described seeing the aircraft flying at not more than 1000ft before pulling up into low clouds and then reappearing, descending, climbing, banking, and then falling towards the ground.
Both Belz and Farrell had been hurled clear of the Cessna and their bodies were found around 30ft from the main body of the aircraft with the engine lying on Belz's chest. The Rock's body was found underneath the mangled fuselage, his head was decapitated. The Jasper County medical examiner concluded that all three men had been killed instantly.
The National Transportation Safety Board released a report which pinned the blame on the pilot, “The pilot attempted an operation exceeding his experience and ability" and had become confused amid the low clouds and darkness, experiencing "spatial disorientation" before the plane plunged into a pasture at a 30-degree angle. No evidence of airplane mechanical problems, or health issues with the pilot were found.
It said: "The true tragedy of this accident, in addition to the loss of a nationally known and respected sports champion, is the tragedy of hundreds of other similar accidents: it could have been prevented.
      R.I.P. Champ

Not just was he an amazing boxer his determination was out of this world, he had to have the US senate to step in because they wouldn't give him a world championship title fight and in that one he lost due to poor judging, it then took him many tries before he could get a chance again and when he did, he won in spectacular fashion but the people in the stadium started throwing drinks into the ring and he had to be escorted out. My uncle met his father in one of those great moments of happenstance, as when my wife sparred an amiable Ray Leonard at a karate dojo in the Palisades. Leonard went gentle as hell and was not a crude "hit on you" fellow; this is no humble brag, only truth; at an airport, Mike Tyson asked for her number; Tyson, while fine, was more "Come on," etc. She was a young kid, not tall at 5'4" and thought, due to his entourage, he was a basketball player!

Will probably get slammed, but I watched the fight with Leonard back in the day, I'm that old! Also rewatched it again recently, sorry, I still feel Leonard edged it. He knew he'd get absolutely pulverised if he was stupid enough to go toe to toe with Haggler, so he did what he had to. He avoided getting hit and landed eye catching punches. If Haggler had caught him and trapped him once, it could have been all over real fast, but he didn't. Watching it back recently, I really did feel for Haggler, he certainly was one of the greatest of all time, and Leonard couldn't physically hurt him, but he used his own unique skillset better that night. I know I seem to be completely in the minority regarding that fight, and Haggler was furious about to the day he sadly passed away, but he's still one of my all time favourites, one of the best ever and completely underappreciated throughout his whole career.

I don't know that I would say "he had no weaknesses." Being an economical fighter, he could be outworked. Thats what usually accounted to his decision losses. He'd land fewer but more effective punches, but his opponent would land a more flashy, standard work rate, so the judges could be swayed.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler was in evrey word a beast in the ring. The strenght, the power, the killer instinct, the psycological strenght and his concrete chin made him to an deadly opponent for any man to face. Just to sad how he was so desrespected in his career with robberies, getting denied, getting cheated and rejected countless times but still rose to the challenge and didnt give up. Not until the final strwa that broke the camel's back in 1987 with the "Sugar" Ray Leonard fight it was it for Hagler. The dissapointment was to much and he wanted no more part of bad politics any longer. It is sad though because he could easily have jumped up to light heavyweight division and won a couple of world title belts = 2-time weight division world champion due to the division was weak at the time. But like said, he had had enough of boxing.

Marvelous was incredible, not only did the man offer serious competition to holyfield in the "nicest physique of all time" department but he was an incredible warrior and a great boxer with versatility, switchhitting, stamina, he fought long better than anyone, had unheard of cardio and conditioning (maybe rivaled only by Holyfield), great straight shots and shot selection from boths sides and an ungodly chin. He had it all, even his style was cool with those high socks and short shorts.
I heard about his temporalis muscle in another video about him, very interesting.
It's also cool that a right-handed fighter fights southpaw preferably, that puts emphasis on power in the lead hand (obviously) and makes that leaping jab from southpaw way more dangerous.

Hagler has ALWAYS been in my all time top 5 and he' stays on the list, always, just like Duran. The greatest "switch hitters" I can remember off the top are Marvelous, Ricardo Lopez (so subtle with his switches) and the current p4p inmho - Terrence Crawford. Miguel Cotto was pretty good at it too but never really utilized it like those other guys. I keep trying to explain to dudes at work that fighting an ELITE switch hitter is a nightmare. It's like being in the ring with TWO elite, but distinct boxers who are tag teaming you at will. It would take an equally skilled fighter to counter such an advantage. This is why Hagler, at least in my mind, NEVER LOST. Neither did Ricardo Lopez. and no one has been able to take away Bud's 0 in the loss column either. Being an elite switch hitter in boxing makes you almost unbeatable.
