  • Kids are rotting their minds by spending hours upon hours in front of screens. That's what parents say anyway. But what impact does all this screen time really have? Trace spent hours researching- in front of computer screen- to get a definitive, scientific answer.

I'm very eager to see how kids who grew up with smart devices in very young years will develope. Seeing only 2D in the first years where you're supposed to understand 3D could make a very big difference in later life, or maybe non at all. There are people with whole parts of their brain missing and those people are still able to live (more or less) normally. I actually hope that it won't make too much of a difference as they didn't really have a chance to say 'No, I don't want that tablet because it will make me dumb.' or sth like that.

I agree, it's become more of a pandemic with each passing year and we wonder why new generations are so lost when it comes to the everyday world. People in third world countries are more knowledgeable of the real world around them and how it works because they live in it and struggle for survival everyday compared to these kids with so much information in front them but little direction to what is correct or how to discern what's plausible.

I think this question should really be looked at hard when people start using AR like hololens in earnest because I could see many people spending all their waking hours using something like hololens because AR promises to become the true personal assistant we all want our smart phones to be.

The problem with computers is that you can do SO much on the computer. You can learn languages, chat with friends, watch movies and tv... You can have almost all of your hobbies on the computer. It feels bad being so dependent on a screen, but it's so convenient.

Up until I was 10 I didn't really use technology much. I had a Nokia phone to call my parents and a Nintendo ds. For my eleventh christmas I was given a laptop, for the twelfth a tv. For my thirteenth (this year) I was given an iPad. I think it's good when kids aren't into technology until there about 10 or older. I still go out with my friends most days and cook, paint and read

I was always on the PC since I was 5 years old and I think it has aided my development educationally in almost every way. I've dedicated my time to learning programming languages, expanding my vocabulary and knowledge in computing and biology and the universe. As the DNews reporter suggests, it can potentially ruin social development through developing anxiety and depression disorders, be careful how you regulate computing time but remember computers are great aids for information and discovery.

At the beginning, I wouldn't ask "what's wrong with this magazine?", I would ask why the toddler has it in the first place. it's literally an Marie Claire magazine. they shouldn't have it in the first place. also, that kid's like 1 or 2, so they probably don't know how to read one yet.
also, when I see something interesting on TV, I just watch it. nothing else to it.

I think kids shouldn't start dealing with technology until they're like 6 or 8. I didn't touch a computer until I was 12 and I was happy... I used to go out and play with the kids in my neighborhood. Now parents like Trace said use technology as baby sitters and kids grow up alongside artifacts instead of friends... I just think parents should pay a little more of attention to their kids instead of their responsibilities.

There's a lot of good learning games/apps on the ipad, tablets, smartphones, and computers and on TV there are shows like Sesame Street that help kids learn too. I think it's about moderation. Give them blocks and other physical toys too and make sure their screen time is limited. Also I wouldn't let kids have their own device until they're older and understand the responsibilities that come with having the device.

at age 2 or under, a kid is more likely to throw something of the ground or put it in their mouth. so, toys it is. Plus, kids need outside time and time with other kids actually interacting with eachother, not playing 2 player on a game. kids definitely get too much screen time.

That is not good! Granted these are older children/teens that I am referring to. I just don't understand how they can spend so much down time not doing something physical or mental.

I watched one hour of TV this week: Justin Warner's Rebel Eats. Now if we're counting TH-cam... I don't honestly know. I can say that having TH-cam has many me mostly uninterested in "traditional" TV. TV has more commercials and worst of all, it too often entertains to such a large audience that it's never tailored to all my interests. What I wonder is if these studies took computers into account too.

I don't spend much time watching TV anymore, nor do I have any kind of mobile phone, or device like and ipad, ipod, ect. In my opinion, kids are getting too much screen time, at too young an age. I've seen too often kids who don't understand things, or think they know everything because they'll have an iphone at 7 years old. Personally, I don't think a kid should even be able to try owning an iphone, ipod, ipad, mobile phone, ect. Until at least 14 or older. This is based off my experiences.

What If we create something JUST/ONLY for reading, sharing E-Books, safe search browsing, etc. No Games, no Music, no videos can be saved in the device, (browsing videos and music are still available).
Design it so it looks like a book, Folio size, can be flipped open, Stylus pen included. Auto save anything you write just Like a book, very similar.
Make it as cheap as possible, make paper expensive so tree cutting also expensive. Papers only used for Inter/National archive.
