- Nikon is announcing the $1,999.95 Nikon ZF, a modern mirrorless camera packed with fairly high specs - like a 24.5-megapixel full-frame sensor, 299-point tracking autofocus with subject detection, in-body image stabilization, and dual card slots (of a sort) - in a body that looks just like one of the camera’s analog forebears. #Photography #Nikon #Technology

I didn’t say “Fuji” in this video… thumbs up if that’s fine, comment “Fuji” if it ain’t.
-becca
It does feel weird to talk about the ZF as a photography hobbiest camera, and not acknowledge Leica or Fuji who have been filling this same niche for years.
Fuji! Come on, it’s the competition.
I'm bothered by the fact that this video is just an ode to the two 35mm Nikon cameras I inherited from my dad in 1998. I'm not a pro photographer, but I feel like if 25 years later we don't have cameras that "feel" better than cameras first made in the 1950s, then photography in general has a major problem.
Fuji
How could you mention fuji on a show called Full Frame?
I wish you had talked more on "Why 24-megapixels is better than 200-megapixels".
I'll give you the short version: smartphone sensor tiny, full-frame sensor big.
Interesting that you've changed the title of the video.
@@dltjdmswhat was it originally
@@tyyamnitz8408The original title was something like "24 megapixels are better than 200 megapixels."
Frankly with the size of a smartphone sensor I can't understand how they can get 200mp. I have been involved with digital photography for 16 years, sensor size has always been the #1 thing photographers talk about, MP are #2.When Fujifilm came out with the XT5, a 40mp crop sensor, many people stated it was too many MP for a crop sensor camera and image quality would suffer, yet people talk about a smartphone with a super small sensor and 100 mp as something great. I will just finish with this, I started with a point and shoot Canon camera, and I now own multiple cameras from four manufacturers, when I receive the Nikon ZF, it will be my first Nikon and last camera, I have enough cameras to last a lifetime, and being 66 years of age I will be passing some on to my four grand children if they become interested in photography. Even though a smartphone can take good photos under the right conditions, I don't consider it a camera, but I see it as a camera function. A smartphone can do a lot of things but it doesn't replace my desk top computer, my Garmin navigator or any of my cameras, it lacks everything that I feel makes a camera, a camera.
Becca, don't ever change! Watching you geek out over cameras is one of my favorite things on the internet. Love your videos!
They can change however they want to, don't be oppressive or toxic if you appreciate them.
@@kil-roy wtf? how is a compliment about their work even remotely toxic?
Literally same!!!
Very simpy 🥴
The good thing about this camera is, it’s not just a good looker. The IBIS is new and is now rated to 8 stops, it has pixel shift, and the processor is the Expeed 7 from the Z8 and Z9, which brings many AF improvements and even allows it to do precapture.
And THEN, there is the body styling, the satisfying experience, the shutter noise (thanks so much for recording it btw).
Plus it has a fully articulating screen and indeed, the touchscreen to move your focus point around.
I think there’s verrrry few people who don’t like this camera.
I can get review on spec anywhere - but Becca gets the spirit and art behind photography and I love watching her speak on these subjects.
I think we are slowly forgetting how great pictures can look with devices like these. Great review and great pics!
A classic full frame banger from Becca as usual
davidddd! 🥰
Oh man.... this is what the XT-5 SHOULD HAVE BEEN... a full frame digital retro design camera..
I love the bulk/heft of a well made camera and as impractical as it is for me, someone who isn't a photographer, not even in the slightest, i definitely agree that taking pictures with a dedicated camera is way more fun and i take more time and effort to frame and take my shots than any smartphone camera. I was in NYC this Summer for the first time and i would have loved to have had used a dedicated camera instead of my Pixel 7 Pro even though i got some great shots. Maybe it's just me but i feel like pictures from a dedicated camera somehow always look better. But for me it just comes down to practicality. Obviously i have my phone on me most of the time apart from jyst the sheer cost of a standalone camera that i don't think id use enough to justify the cost and i think many are in the same boat. Id love more reason to use it to make it make sense for me cause i love the mechanical nature of a mirrorless or DSLR camera but sadly I'd have to go out of my way to find an excuse to use it.
Spot on! The experience of using a well-made camera is part of the joy of photography.
It focuses the mind on the moment. It slows us down just long enough to observe what we're doing.
Great video! Facts and feeling.
I want to add that this actually quite a good and compelling camera for video as well. 10 bit internal full frame with flippy screen? That's great. I wouldn't be afraid to use it for client work.
Nikonians rejoice.... We asked for it... And now it's here ❤🙌🏻
Why does the title have the 200mp in the first place....this video was all about the Nikon
I have a feeling the title of this video might change....
Why?
Agreed
Why
Agreed
@@travelguy8431Genital joke.
When people start saying you pay extra because it feels nice then you know discussion has shifted from product category to luxury category. And in luxury everything is subjective.
So creating a objective product review video was pointless from the beginning.
Exactly, it always feel like they're trying to SELL ME SOMETHING
Like it or not, this is where the consumer end of cameras is going, for the average person cameras have reached optimum image quality and people need a reason for using a dedicated camera over a smartphone or to upgrade from whatever digital camera they already have, and something that looks and feels cool to hold and use will inevitably do better in today's market. If anything, this is just a return to the camera market of the 70s, 80s and 90s.
So tldr “it feels better in the hand”? Misleading title
its pretty simple, if your argument is "why would i want to carry a camera everywhere" or "why would i get this over a phone that does more" its simply not for you. i have an iphone that i use for 90% of my shots but there are times where i prefer my camera which takes very different kind of photos. ( not over processed , flexible editing , higher meaningful resolution , natural depth , variable focal length without image quality compromise )

Appreciate your great videos as always, Becca!
Nikon even made the Lens vintage. I had a vintage 50mm 1.4 and it is identical to this.
Great job as usual. Are you going to do the a7cii? We need that little ripper update
After switching away from Nikon for two years, I bought a sunset orange Zf for its look; and pleasantly surprised by the excellent performance specially in manual focus, which makes Voightlander 40mm f1.2 as ideal match to the retro look, metal construction and beautiful classic image.
This is one of the best camera reviewer that I really enjoy watching, from an information and entertainment standpoint. Great review!!
I shoot Sony for digital but I have so much love for my Nikon FE2 film camera. This Camera looks almost identical to that one, which was made in the 70's or 80's I think. Shoutout to Nikon for committing to the look and feel of vintage cameras!
I fully agree, I'm willing to switch to Nikon some day if they keep releasing these cool vintage-inspired cameras, but I need them to work on their lens selection. My favorite focal length is 40mm and that compact 40mm lens they have on their system is enticing, but I wish it had an aperture ring.
I currently use a Voigtlander 40mm with the Z-mount adaptor in a Nikon Z6, but would go for this nice compact 40mm native. Can't use the aperture ring on my Voigtlander anyway unless I unscrew the lens slightly, but aperture rings are so much nicer than dials that I do this half the time anyway.
This video literally did not explain why 24 megapixels is better than 200 megapixels. 😢
Because low double digit megapixel images are good for almost any use. Add too many and you start to suffer from smaller pixels on the sensor accepting less light, which gets you grainy and dark low light photos. The reason smartphones have such high resolutions is because they use the extra pixels to do post-processing such as zooming in, noise reduction, image brightening, and the end result after all that is usually about 12mp anyway. You don't need to do any of that with the huge sensor and lenses on a dedicated camera.
@@skylark6167 Thank you for that information! I usually wait until my smartphone is literally dead before buying the least expensive replacement, so I've never had a fancy smartphone camera to compare against.
I'm a professional icon designer, and that camera drawing is great!
Yeah! Great review, thank you. Some smaller primes to go with the new body is an absolute requirement!
I watched like every review of the Zf on TH-cam. This is my favorite one.
I find my IPhone Pro Max in the case I use really good. A lot of it is about finding a case that supports photography with a range of good grips and using the volume button as a shutter - my main grip use my thumb to actuate the shutter and its super comfortable. I also have a really good quality tripod mount from a photography brand and a remote. Don't really miss the DSLR, have to say.
Cool video. I’ve been wanting to see this for a while (to justify my multiple camera buys, notwithstanding the iPhone 12 Pro that lives in my pocket and takes great photos 😁)
Imagine complaining that a full mirrorless camera takes better pictures than a phone.
I need your advice on buying a camera and lens mainly for taking indoor photos- lets say with a distance of maximum 100 meters. I have no knowledge in this field, request to kindly suggest one.
Would be super cool to see spacial photos become mainstream with regular cameras
I was waiting for a Z6iii for my amateur-hour talents to play with. But this camera may fill the bill nicely. I would think it will be a hell of an upgrade from my current D7100. Course I'll need a few new lenses too. I can see not much change from 10k here in Australia where everything is twice the price. Oh well, I hate money so...I think an orange one...
Phone cameras are supposed to be "good enough", for daily use such as taking family pictures, beautiful scenes that you want to share to your friends right then and there, beautiful objects, or school and work use, it's meant to be "sufficient" for "daily use",
if you want the best quality photos, for professional purposes such as production of movies and such, obviously a high quality camera is crucial, is there any movies that are made by S23 Ultra or Iphone 15 pro max? I would be surprised!
I've seen a lot a of ZF reviews but this one is by far the best! Well done 👍
why still by stand alone camera? .... well, interchangeable lenses, full frame cmos sensor, high iso, shutter speed, raw format. phone camera today are good, definitely replace old school pocket point and shoot camera, but definitely not a dslr 😁
I was thinking of upgrading my z5 to z6ii during the upcoming holiday sales but this new Zf is tempting. I don’t do any videography and photography is currently a hobby I would like to make a job one day.
Either I wait for the z6ii to drop in price for better ergonomics or buy the Zf with better AF & better images stabilization for $1999.
What a nice surprise of a video!!
I am still happy with my Olympus OM- D E-M5 Mk2. Perhaps will upgrade in few years to come. 🙃
The title is misleading. Half of the video is like a big advertisement. 😂
Finally, a mirrorless equivalent of my F2...
Becca Thanks so much for sharing. I just one of them would get the whole package by now.💯✌️
Oh yes!!! now all we need is a rangefinder camera that is styled after the Nikon S3. COME ON NIKON I BELIEVE IN YOU!!
You say it’s all new guts, but the most important part the sensor is the same sensor they used four years ago in the z6. Putting a fluorine coat on the sensor makes it new I don’t think so.
Martin øDegard is a man with many talents
Happy to get Becca's thoughts on the Zf.
Becca's camera stuff is the best video content from The Verge.
As someone who can afford both of these devices, I can safely say that I'm actually lying.
Always on point ❤
Being able to see the shot in full daylight is nice eh? But when you can't see what you're shooting, you can always crop later, if you have enough pixels.
Always enjoy your videos
Full frame series ❤
What a superb overview, your passion really came through here and spoke for so many of us camera nerds 🤓
Well played Becca and team 📷🫶📷
Nikon should release more z character lens for hipster, artist, creative people. They only got 2: 28/40. And this cam should use z8/9 two way hinge or bottom hinge articulating screen not side hinge fully articulating lens. This cam heavy photography centric
I like this vintage camera body, complete with real, functioning dials! I hope Canon comes up with their own version of this, as I'm not willing to switch camps, even though this camera seems great.
I use Sony gear, but this is a gorgeous camera that is very tempting
I honestly think this is the perfect tiktok/instagram camera. Albeit expensive but it's fun aesthetically pleasing and it takes good full-frame photos and can make simple tiktok type videos. It's not a workhorse type of camera but I would chose this over any Leica.
They need a 50mm F1.4 like I had on my Nikon F back in the 1960s.
Loud shutter sound? Quietest shutter sound I’ve heard.
is that title intentionally done? i guess it's gonna change after reviews
Hi! What is your favorite camera for photography?
Please don't mention about the phone camera thing with Zf release story.
I’m not in the market for a $2000 camera, but I’m definitely in the market for a video from Becca.
Would love to see her take on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Finally hit its stride in color science? Umm nikon has been a master at image out put and color science since the very first digital slrs. Some say their older dslrs like the d200 are better than todays mirrorles in terms of image output obviously dynamic range and high iso is worlds apart.
Your videos are a breath of fresh air, Becca. And thank you for acknowledging that the S23 Ultra has the best smartphone camera in the market right now. I like reviewers who give their honest opinions without resorting to the use of safe words: "probably, arguably, potentially...etc" as in "this phone is probably the best in the market right now" 😃
I do hope that the Nikon Z5 Mark 2 has a flip out screen and unlimited recording time limit
I want someone to try a good camera in a cellphone again, like the Nokia camera grip, the Samsung detachable camera module, and the Samsung camera with a smartphone in it and the other two or three that were phones stuck inside cameras
Someone already has, just not in the US or outside of China for that matter. Xiaomi made the 13 Ultra which they also made a photography kit for which includes a very clever BT camera grip for $200. If you want the most capable in all lighting conditions mobile phone camera, it's not an iPhone or Pixel (sadly, I have 7 Pro that I love) or S23 Ultra, the 13 Ultra beats them all.
Oh my god,a channel is with 3 million more followers!😮
The look won't be complete until there's a film wind lever. No idea what they'll use it for, but I'm sure some clever engineer will dream something up.
If Ødegaard wasn't a footballer...
bit weird to see such a young looking person talking about a classic Nikon design as they have grown up with it
I just love every video with Becca in it
That s23 ultra 8k 30fps clip🤯
This or x100vi?
2k usd wowsers
I was super interested, thought this would be a great camera at... $600 on the low end, $800 on the high end. TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS, THOUGH?! That's a high bar to clear for a "vibes" camera. Stellar review, though
She vastly undersold the capabilites of the camera. It's very much not just a vibes camera. It's better than the Nikon Z6ii, which is a normal/modern looking mirrorless camera, which is also 2k.
This camera can do 30fps full res jpeg bursts, or 14fps raw shooting.
It can shoot 10bit internal 4k video. It has the same processor as the Z8 and Z9, which are 4000 and 5500 respectively.
The overheat warning is most likely a pre production glitch, as every reviewer seems to be getting that, regardless of the heat
This looks exactly like a Nikon FM3A that I have......
Camera controls are going an analog while car interiors are going digital. So weird!
For a moment I thought you were going to compare the new 48 mp camera on the iPhone to Samsung
But but if my S23 Ultra has 200 megapickels, it’s automatically better than the high end Hasselblad and Fujifilm, right???
2023 fullframe camera without watersealing and without a joystick? imma stick with my xpro3
Hey Buds. 📸
2 years later..
“Why 200-megapixels is better than 24-megapixels”
when canon makes one i will be SOLD
Well said!
Ah damn i hate that type of lcd screen :(
Why do cameras still have to look like the design from the 50's, 60's, 70's? The rugged texture, the colors, etc
Why do cameras all have to be identical DSLR styled lumps of plastic? We need more variety in the camera space, and this is a first good step in that, we need more retro, futuristic and generally wacky designs in my opinion
uhmm actually now, the majority of modern cameras don't look like old cameras except for a few ones that are deliberately designed like that to trigger nostalgia, like this camera. They are still using rugged texture leather tho, for grip purpose.
What Title says
What she saying whole 6:09 min
love your intro!
Nikon has finally hit its stride with color science? What are you even talking about?
The camera drawing is really not that bad.
Oh damn you can feed a family of four for four months for the price of that thing. Really expensive for something to "have fun with"
Did you say Nikon S bodies were made in 1959? You mean F.
Best smartphone cam in US is s22?
buried the lede with those colors!!
I love Becca's vibe, I watch Full Frame like 90% for Becca's personality and vibe and 10% for the cameras themselves 😂💕
No grip?
Great video, but this very subjective and heavily biased. I guess I am just a poor boy that can't afford a S23 Ultra *AND* $2000 camera
I can't afford either
Too bad for you mate. Work harder and the money will get to you.
200mp is a gimmick to sell the phone
