    It looks to me like you installed a Jeld Wen door. That's coincidentally the brand I'm using. Mine has 5-recessed panels, looks like your's has 3 (not that it is important). My doors are too tall by 3/8". Do you think I can simply cut that away at the bottom and be done with it (won't have to glue the bottom part in since I'm not cutting away more than the thickness of that part)? I stuck a wire with a small bend into the pivot mount hole, and it appears the thickness of the bottom piece is right at 1". Cutting away 3/8" will leave 5/8" thickness (I will carefully cut away taking into consideration the blade thickness). Do you believe this 5/8" will leave enough support? This bifold door is for a new basement storage closet. It isn't something that will be used every day like a bedroom closet would. Thank you for your video!

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sounds like a plan.
      You should have plenty support left over inside the door. I suggest to staple some nails into it, just in case. Also, paint the bottom of the door very well, mopping soaks it and will swell up in time. Good luck.👌

    My daughter (lives in another state) needs me to replace a pair of missing bi-fold doors (1/2 of the double width doors) this week. Based on her measurements I may need to trim the width of the doors about 1/2” or so and may have to shorten the doors the same amount. I’m concerned about trimming the doors. Which side should be trimmed or does it matter? I’m concerned if I cut 1/2” off the door bottom that there may not be enough bottom mdf thickness to support the pivot pin. How should I deal with that?

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its a gamble for the bottom. I would be very careful . Based on the type doors I had from HD. I would trim 1/4" on top and the other 1/4 from the bottom.
      For the width of the doors, you can trim about1/4” off the inside of the doors. Not the pivot or the end of the doors but the hinged inside doors.
      Hope that makes sense to you.

      That happens when it's hammered in too hard or the hole is not the same size.
      If it's damaged its easily replaced.

    Is it feasible to reduce the door width size too? Also, would it need an even amount shaved off both long sides of each door? My closet I'm looking to put these in is 80" high and 70.5" wide.

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A bit more complicated but it can be done by cutting same amount on each set of doors.

      You need a minimum of 1" play to be able to fit the door and have some adjustment room. If you can you want 1 1/2". Jeld-Wen Hollow Bifold Closet Door www.homedepot.com/s/jeld-wen%20hollow%20bifold%20closet%20door?NCNI-5

    It annoys me to no end that modern doors don't really allow any trimming, they should have at least 2 inches of solid wood at the bottom of a door for carpet. But it makes me feel better that I can do the same thing I have been doing to my poorly designed Jeld-Wen interior doors to my bi-fold ones I need to install.

      @@mindyamato4083 Sounds like a plan. Just make sure you paint the bottom with 3 coats of good paint is my best advise to you. Mopping over time makes the compressed wood they use these days bubble up.

    Couldn’t u cut a bit off top and bottom so u didn’t need to make repairs?

      Up to you but once you remove 1/2 the support on compressed wood it may fail by the pin holes. I guess it depends how rough it's used.

    Your doors are supposed to be 1-5/8” smaller than your net vertical opening. Example: 80” net opening? Subtract 1-5/8” = 78-3/8”. Your doors should be 78-3/8” high. That accommodates your hardware. You’re welcome.

    You’re supposed to cut both top and bottom of you need more clearance- as per instructions. Then you won’t have to worry about cutting the filler out and having to re-glue it in place.
