Classic Sesame Street animation: Monster in the dark

  • I took this from Episode 871. I wonder why he was so repulsed at the end when he saw the monster, and not by the fact that they had dead birds and sardines lying around the floor?
And wasn't there a similar cartoon used for either the Electric Company or 3-2-1 Contact? I vaguely remember that.

This is my favorite "co-operation" themed Sesame Street shorts because of the set-up and payoff. You have an unseen figure, but with a *very* friendly sounding voice and yellow eyes, trying to help out the other person. After everything is all said and done, the guy seemed to prefer his companion in the dark. :)
In the late '80s and early '90s, I usually would refer to this piece as an analogy of what it was like meeting someone in person after only knowing them through email or message boards (back at a time when being online was still primarily text based). Sometimes people looked better behind the computer screen as plain text.

I'm so obsessed with this. It sounds like they improvised in this skit. This is some of the best acting I've ever seen.

Don't recall seeing this as a young boy but I love it-the voices sound like two friends helping each other and,to me,the dialogue sounds like they're improvising as they go along wonderful sketch love the twist ending Auckland New Zealand 2022

Good stuff - finally the FULL, uncensored version...
I remember, back in the late 90s watching this, and the final line, when the guy says, "Yuccchhh", was omitted - - - possibly because it was decided that looking at someone, or 'something' different and expressing disgust was sending kids the wrong social message, and endorsing prejudice.
Nice morals, but this original version, in full, is just too cute!!

I misread the title as "Monsters in the dark" and thought it was two monsters. I was confused when I saw that one guy wasn't a monster. Then I realized the title was "Monster in the dark" not "monsters."

And one thing that I always overlooked, until seeing this on TH-cam, was the reason why the man who turns on the light ends up saying,"Yucch!" at the end-NOW, of course, I know, partly because of the title,"MONSTER in the dark." I mean, somehow I just never noticed that the second man had turned out to be a monster, or some other ugly looking creature. Saw this many a time, in the 1970s, as well as the plethora of other Old School SS classics.

MonsterpieceTheatre It depends on how old the switch is. Years ago I heard quite a few of them on the farm (which was built in the late 1800's and had the first electricity so I was told, in the 1940's.) that sounded pretty close to that. Maybe that's it.....?
