  • In this lecture, we will study about Social Facts. Emile Durkheim argued that Subject matter of Sociology is the study of social facts. He argued in his book The Rules of Sociological method that social facts are external to the individual and exercise a constraint on his behaviour.

      Thinkers by 15th july and paper-1 by October end.. You could start writing answers post completion of thinkers in a very limited manner... But more fruitful approach would be to attempt it once you have completed atleast 80% of paper-1!!

    Abhi tak jo pda hai maine few things I have understood is that: 1)none of the Sociologist theory can be discarded completely..they are very much relevant even in today's world...
    2)none of the Sociologists theory can be held absolutely true..
    There are some de-merits in every theory but have some very much eye opening concepts too.

      I have covered Deviance topic separately.... See that lecture... I covered both Durkheim's and Merton's view of deviance in a single lecture.
      Critic of religion--- we will cover in Religion chapter.... It is basically from 2 perspectives.... Structure functionalist perspective of Merton ( actually I have talked about in functions and dysfunctions)... Second critic would be The marxist perspective on religion (which I have partially covered in marx.... But will deal in detail in theories of religion)!!

    Observe these 4 scenarios :
    1. Religious Hierarchy and Social Hierarchy
    2. Appeal To Authority ("precious" leader or the governor of an entire group/society)
    3. Appeal To Majority
    4. Milgram Authority Obedience Experiments & Asch Peer/Group/Majority Conformity Experiment.
    Here in these circumstances an Individual becomes mentally and physically disarmed and totally succumbs to these factors pertaining to the "large volume of people" listed above.
    Perhaps Sociologists like Durkheim already knew that an Individual or a group of Individuals did not have any influence or power over the decision of the entire massive society or the entire massive religious community in the society. So this must be the reason why Durkheim kept the society greater than the individual.
    What do you think ?

    Can someone explain what does it mean when we say social facts should be treated as things??

    • @kaarwan-e-upsc
      @kaarwan-e-upsc  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Durkheim wanted sociology to be a scientific discipline.... Just like Natural Sciences study things/objects (Eg. A car in motion is an object/thing...and Laws of motion in physics could be applied to accurately determine its behavior like speed/acceleration etc. with accuracy and precision)
      Similarly, Durkheim argues that social facts should be considered as things/objects and thereby we could discover universal laws (in social sciences) on the lines of natural sciences (like laws of motion, laws of thermodynamics in physics) or general theories... Hence positivism is possible in sociology because its subject matter is the study of social facts which should be treated like things or objects... So sociology is a science as per Durkheim's views or arguments!!
      For further clarity, combine this lecture with the lecture on positivism!!

      It's the objective study of society and it's various functions,. Just like a biologist who puts a microorganism under the microscope and studies it's parts and functions objectively with scientific methods, likewise a sociologist studies society under a "social microscope" to study the things of the society using scientific methods.

  • @letsstudy6904

    Not all fact of human behaviour is social facts,state the meaning of social facts and method of studying them with refernce to this statement .
    kya sir is que me hume critic of scientific method and positivism bhi batana hai
    and problems of observing social facts in durkheim view is que ko kaise deal karna hai

    • @kaarwan-e-upsc
      @kaarwan-e-upsc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. You can bring in Positivists.... I don't think Hume will be relevant here. ( also talk about weber not all kind of human behaviour is social in nature)
      2. Problems is to be objective, gathering data out of mind, elimination of subjectivity as social facts even though external are internalised... How to ensure objectivity.
      Also, social facts unlike physical facts are not physically present which are manifestly visible
      Avoiding assumptions, preconceptions, bias etc
      Need to be explained only sociologically ( with help of other social facts) and not individually or psychologically. Social facts are irreducible to the level of the individuals.

      It's difficult to pinpoint or suggest test Series as most of the test Series are run on purely commercial basis wherein large no. of students join it and thereby it becomes unviable for coaching institutes to check the sheets in time... Sir, ED says," Sociologists could collect data outside of their own minds without any subjective bias and preconceived notions - since sociologist is also a part of society and social facts are external to an Individual". How is this possible in Modern societies? When ED talks about simple societies, as collective consciousness is very strong, detailed and individuality is nil, then objectivity is ensured. How is objectivity ensured in Modern societies when CC is weak, individuality is high and when there is scope for flexibility/autonomy(because rigidity is low)?

    • @kaarwan-e-upsc
      @kaarwan-e-upsc  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      According to Durkheim, Sociology studies social facts.... Now, Social Facts are like things or objects.... Their character or property won't change due to one's perception / subjectivity /Individualism....because it doesn't depend on individual's opinion as that would be subjectivity and not objectivity
      For instance, Even though Individualism is high in modern societies... But all scientists have an agreement over... Let's say laws of motion, laws of thermodynamics, facts of nature and other phenomenon of physical world like distance between earth and moon or earth completing the sun's revolution in 365.24 days... These are facts and doesn't depend on one's opinion... These facts are lying there in the physical world and scientist can collect data lying outside of their minds through observation and empiricism
      Similarly, in Sociology even though individualism is higher in modern societies.... But that doesn't mean that one would be collecting data from their own minds as that would be subjectivity..... Where as Durkheim says sociology is absolutely scientific and objective just like natural sciences
      A sociologist is like a scientist.... His research is not guided by individualism/subjectivity/own ideas.... Rather it is guided by facts of the society (social facts).... Just like how a scientist is guided by facts of the natural or physical world.
