I have got to tell you Danny, I am very impressed! I thought I was meticulous. I have carved 3 fish and I also hand sculpted a giant flathead from plaster. I had never carved or sculpted anything before that. I fell in love with it and had to put it aside for a few years. I used basic knowledge from my high school art classes about the subject from around 40 years ago and I jumped in. I made a lot of mistakes and had to redo a lot. I have just started carving again and cannot believe I let making a living get in the way of living. You sir have been a great inspiration that has really provided a wealth of knowledge. I have been producing art most of my life and you have shown me things in your videos that has my head reeling with excitement and I cannot wait to try them.

Thanks for the kinds words Paul. I’ve been drawing and painting all my life as long as I’ve been able to hold a pencil or paint brush. I’ve sold paintings all over the country even a couple across the pond in the UK and Africa. I love painting and just thought I had a passion for it until I started carving 3 years ago! I wish I had started carving 40 years ago because at 62 I feel like I won’t get to carve enough in what time I have left😜
I’m getting close to retirement age and three years ago I was dreading it now I’m looking forward to it so I can carve everyday (except for the days I fish or hunt😜)
But I know I’ll be carving a LOT more when I finally do retire in 5-6 years.
I haven’t painted near as much since I started carving. I do one or two paintings between carving projects especially in the cold months when it’s too cold outside for carving. (Got to get me a studio built soon!)
There’s so many fish I want to carve that I have a hard time deciding what to carve next. Right now I’m thinking about the next World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championships so I’m working on fish like this crappie that I want to enter in the next show.
I know I have another rainbow trout planned sometime this summer that’ll be done through a class I’ll be taking that Josh Guge is doing. Josh is a world champion fish and bird carver. I met him at the last world event he was one of the judges in the last competition. So I’m looking forward to that. Probably will do another largemouth and possibly a bluegill for the show. I may even do a couple miniature fish carvings to enter as well.
But I’m glad you like my work and videos. I’m having fun making them (most of the time🤪) I learn more with each project and that’s part of the fun of it that keeps me going. I can tell I’ve come a long way in 3 years of carving but I also know I’ve still got a ton to learn.

Right now I use a Razortip but I’m about to switch to a Colwood soon.
I just become an affiliate with Bearwood Supply Company a couple months ago. They are a woodcarving supply company that carrys them.
If you’re looking for one check out their website Bearwood.com
Use my name (Danny) in the promo code and get 5% off. If you live in the states there’s no tax.
Sorry I didn’t mean to turn my reply into a advertisement 😝
Although I’ll be using a Colwood I’ll keep using the Razortip BPH pen because I can swap out the burning tips. Colwood currently does not offer a pen with interchangeable tips.
I make a lot of my own scale tips.

@@user-ee9er6xw2u ah ok. I thought maybe you were looking to buy one. Colwood is a good unit. Razortip is ok it just doesn’t seem consistent on heat setting’s sometimes but it gets the job done. I want something with a little more range so my Colwood should be here any day.
