Rise of Flight: Great Duel Dogfight - Albatros D.II Vs Nieuport 11.C1

  • Game: Rise of Flight
    Airplane: Albatros D.II
Game Device: Microsoft Sidewinder FF 2 + Logitech Momo Racing as rudder :)
The mouse is a bit faulty, which is why the view moves a little jerky
I'm still not very practical in Rise of Flight, but I think this is a good battle, at least for my current abilities, even if in the end I did not win, I had a lot of fun :D
I was playing in full real mode, with the icons that indicate teammates and enemies disabled.
The battle was very tough and challenging cause my opponent was able to make very tight turns, it was really hard to take his wake. At one point I thought I had the situation under control, but in the end he managed to damage my plane, the engine began to falter, and the aircraft stalled making me fall ...

You were definitely out flown here. Luckily marksmanship doesn't seem to have been the other pilots strong point.

Never, repeat NEVER give up altitude to take on a tighter turning opponent at his level. You have the advantage of altitude, you get to pick and choose the conditions under which you fight. He lured you down and you became his lunch.

Atleast with the Albatross you still have a speed, acceleration, Climb, and extreme dive advantage...the Nieuport 11 is simply inferior...now doing that in a dogfight against a Nieuport 17 would be a death sentence

@@granddukeofmecklenburg I don't think the Albartross III had a climbing advantage over the Nieuport 11, but it certainly had a turning disadvantage. You never give up altitude to fight a more nimble opponent at his level, that's basic. Use your energy advantage to seek a tactical advantage, then attack when he tries to break away and fly for home. Play the numbers game.

Overall good fight just one tiny thing. The albatross is not good in a dive but if you idle power and your enemy is no more then 400 ft below you you can turn dive into his tail and do a dive strafe. And since it's a neiuport 11 you'll take his wings on the first pass if you aim correctly. If the enemy is more than 400 ft below do a series of sequential dives in which you dive and pull/ turn and dive again until your close enough to make your shot. Once you make your first pass break in the opposite direction if your enemy is turning. If he ain't turning break then pull up using energy from your previous dive to loop and strafe him again. Always watch what the enemy is doing picture where his gunsights are pointing. If you think they are pointing at you dodge out of the way. I'd be happy to send you a clip of my gameplay if you think it will help overall keep praticing I'm sure you'll get better the albatross is the easiest plane to fly providing you don't go into a spin.

By the time the Albatross II came out, the Nieuport 11 was mostly phased out, and the Nieuport 17 was already frances main fighter

Flying Left Right Left Right averages out to flying a straight line. You seem to have a bad habit of giving the other guy your tail just that way. In a fight against a single opponent, you can afford to hold a turn to put him in your sights as long as he isn't able to turn more tightly than you. Then it would be suicide letting him take full and particular advantage of his better handling characteristic in that area.
A two seater's rear gun is there to defend against an attacker on his tail...In attacking two seaters, when you are underneath and behind one, neither crewman can hit or even see you. However, his buddies in the same formation may.

+Blue Heron This is why when I fly two seaters I fly them constantly on a forward slip. Terribly inefficient and not possible on some of them (like the R.E.8 since it's a bit underpowred) but it affords extra protection from such attacks.

For early WW-1 planes These manouvres were impossible. Both, the Albatros and the Nieuport would have been smeared down to the ground with such flight angles in curves.

Best to try and avoid a turning dogfight. The most successful pilots, including The Red Baron relied on speed and surprise- hit and run basically. Richthofen wrote that many a pilot came to grief because of ‘fancy flying’.

Great job with the video production. For more experienced flyers we can see mistakes.. :-) But as you know that's all just time and practice and knowledge. Its a great WW1 combat sim/game. Good stuff,
    Two questions:
1)Have you improved/practiced since you made this over a year ago?
2)Did you record this video live or is this recorded from the in game player's recording?

These are the years before the British airman named Frank Whittle who told us to eliminate all propellers and piston engines, back in 1929. I've read such from one of the Reader's Digest articles. The title: They have Entered into the Jet Age. The German Nazis were way ahead of us, fellow Americans. Our bomber's machine gun turrets couldn't swivel fast enough to defeat them.

I love the albatros. It's my favorite aircraft of the great war. It was also one of the best fighters of the war. It was superior to many of the allied fighters in many regards, one of the only real weaknesses of the albatros was that you CANNOT under any circumstance take it in a steep fast dive. The wing support couldn't handle it and would snap. Does ROF reflect these characteristics realistically?

    • @oldtimesmatthew
      @oldtimesmatthew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

p.s.-the Nieuport 11 is indeed better in a close turn fight against the albatros irl at least (never played rof so not sure how close to real life they got it). Do what the Germans often did: come at your enemy from high, especially from clouds or where the sun will be in their eyes so they can't see you. With the albatros dive at close to maximum safe diving and try to get on their tail, or take a pass at them shooting from above trying to level off with them when breaking off so they don't get the altitude advantage. Use your superior speed to break away from the enemy as fast as possible, then use your superior climb to regain your lost altitude. Rinse and repeat. Don't get into a turning battle if you can avoid it and you know they have a better turning rate. This is what many real life albatros pilots did. (I love history and tactics)

***** Wow, you're a truly passionate! you gave me good tips and I thank you, I'm surprised that you don't play RoF :).
Yes, RoF reflects so much the characteristics of the Albatros and Nieuport that you've described...
When I first played this match, I didn't knew the characteristics of the two planes, so I played instinctively. I did not knew how important it was to keep the energy in a dogfight, in fact, the result was that the enemy took me to play a battle in tight turns at low altitude, inevitably ending up in the cobweb of Nieuport...
You should try to play RoF, you can also play for free, I'm sure you would like it.

Actually, the D.II had a double spar lower wing, it was robust and the aircraft could be dived with reasonable confidence. It was the D.III & D.V's that had the single-spar lower wing, which could warp/twist at high speeds or high G's.

Keep turning. You reversed your turn waaaay too often, allowing your opponent to engage you from behind with, at times, little need for deflection shooting. He was a bad shot.

Hi, I am not good in flying ROF, I never had the right equipment nor time. So consider this really as a question. I am not surely trying to be rude. However in many times in your fight I was wondering why you didn't try to gain some altitude. I think I saw few good moments to do so and you should have the advantage you needed.

      @baronesbc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

FYI: If your interested to learn flying Some good training video for ROF can be found here. (then lots of practice :-)
      newwingstraining.org/e107_plugins/content/content.php?cat.1
I'm still learning myself, it never ends... Takes a few hours to learn to fly and takes a lot of flying hours to master combat flying. Gets a lot more fun as you improve, its well worth it. ROF is a very good WW1 combat sim. Also not only do you need to know how to fly , but also to learn the strengths and weakness of your plane and the enemies. Long learning curve, but fun one.

I'm currently flying using an xbox 360 controller, (its doable (but not ideal) with right settings, takes some work to tune it). To be really good though you also should get TrackIR and a joystick with rudder control. A good basic cheap joystick like a Logitech extreme 3d pro is about $30-50 (ie needs to have throttle and rudder control).

The planes and environment look gorgeous. It's just such a pity that the damage model, bullet accuracy and AI survival routines are so wildly inaccurate in this game. It turns what might have been a wonderful simulation into a ridiculously easy arcade game where you can outscore the top aces by three times (or more). It wouldn't be so bad if you could modify these things, but Maddox are so focused on multiplayer and so afraid to give players any control for fear of the potential for cheating, that they just don't allow tweaking the damage model, and bullet spread due to vibration isn't modeled at all. It's a very pretty game, but no one should get into this hoping to find out what WW1 dogfighting was like.

+Rachelle: You can only watch recordings using the in game player. To capture the video for you tube use etc you will need to use a screen recorder program like Fraps (or a video capture card), to record your live flight (or the in game player's recording you made). (Virtually all games don't record live video (that is very cpu/gpu intensive as it requires video format conversion, which programs like fraps do) , they record data the in game players use to watch using the games video engine to play it.
