  • The Albatros D.III was a German, single-engine, biplane scout fighter of World War 1 that saw service from the end of 1916 to the cessation of hostilities and beyond. It is perhaps best known for its role in Bloody April of 1917. This is its story.

    The Spad 7 was in service in 1916 with the 150 hp Hispano Suiza. In late 1917 they started getting 180 hp engines.

    Wasn't the lower wing problem of the D.III and worse D.V one of aerodynamic flutter, mostly due to the V-Strut allowing relatively unimpeded twisting, and a spar not stiff enough in that regard?

    11:12 Firstly the replacement Schwarlose was the 12/RM16 (M16 was a cavalry weapon similar to the land service le MG 08/15 in Germany -compared to the so called "Sandau" the aircraft variant of the le MG 08/15 with the perforated barrel jacket) but importantly Schwarlose M 07/12 functioned in the Alps at elevations at least up to 3000 metres and at equally cold temperatures and far worse weather conditions. The chances are the problem with KUK aircraft Schwarlose at altitude had more to do with failures of the interrupter gear, and possibly water being driven into the fabric belts causing swelling and thus stoppages -a problem less common in land service as crew were disciplined to prevent these belt problems -and a fighter pilot can't access belts to prevent ingress of water in flight.

    This is an aircraft initially used by famous American Kościuszko squadron which fought for Poland in 1919/20 war with bolsheviks.

      @@Forgotten_Aviation Not sure but American Squadron got them in the fall on 1919 with first airfield outside Lviv which today is in Ukraine. Fascinating story really.

    I like your videos but I would suggest that when you are referring to an aircraft that you show the correct plane. For example you're talking about the D III but you have a picture of a Nieuport 11 up for a while - why?

      I think the context is that the sesquiplane design of the DIII was strongly influenced by the Nieuport

    Would love to see a video about the experiments with a 20mm cannon on those old planes. I remember hearing that during field tests they were one-shot-one-kill (10 out of 12?), but smoke in the cockpit after firing was too problematic.

    The Austrians built the best Albatross D.3 of the war.They did not have the lower wing failure problems because they strengthen the lower wings and they had much more power for download engines than the german mercedes. Another interesting point is albatross.Also ended up building the fokker D7 and folker didn't produce blueprints.So albatross had to produce reverse engineered blueprints and produced better quality fokker D7 with none of the quality control problems Fokker had. they also were lighter weight
