- Great tune by the swedish fusion band. This is from the "trum" TV-show, with Morgan Ågren on the drums, Mats Öberg on keyboards(standing up), Jimmy Ågren on guitar, Tommy Tordsson on bass, and Robert Elovsson on keyboards(sitting down).
Most of us know Morgan Ågren is amazing, but the bass player really sticks the landing on his timing on this piece, which seems very challenging. It's extremely tight with some very unusual meters.
My oldest son is 14 at the time of this post. When he was in diapers, I had him sit in my lap watching this. And today, he can thump a 7-string with the best of ‘em. This music undoubtedly helped.
I saw Morgan perform in Houston with Devin Townsend right at the cusp of the pandemic. Regardless how well he fit to DT’s music, I thought constantly of this music. Couldn’t believe he was only 30 feet away. Absolute legends M&M are, and even more so in ‘21.
Had the honor of opening for these guys in Detroit, 2004 or so? Amazing musicians, and great people!
Met the drummer at a shoe store many years ago. He was very nice and autographed a large wooden spoon for me.
Not many drummers carry a large wooden spoon around for their autograph! Morgan is truly special!😁
A world renowned drummer signing a wooden spoon in a shoe store sounds like a dream I might have after a bender.
just one of the oddest collections of musicians playing one of the most hilariously technical tunes ever
spot on!
+schpleeb So you love this and Karl Pilkington? I have more in common with you, YT stranger, than with most of my family.
The bassist kinda looks like an alternate universe Fredrik Thordendal
What universe are you from👊
@@howardparkeriii2441 if I say I have to go back👊
Don Sal. T. Kinda agree...👍
That is his brother Anders Thordendal.
He is, actually Frederik made a collab with them
Spread the word guys! Get this good music out to more folks. The world needs this stuff!
These guys are so good. I'm surprised that they're not more popular.

Tommy on bass, what a beast!
Morgan's work with Fredrik Thordendal is some serious mind-blowing stuff.
Sol Niger withing. Mats too worked on that
This is perhaps the coolest band ever.
Best music ever I wish there would be more music like this
Sick. I fucking love it. Scifi Jazz straight from the future.

Sounds like 8bit Meshuggah
George Kartvelishvili 8bit :D
Fun fact they played this with Fredrik Thorendal from Meshuggah (and Mattias IA Eklundh)
All are swedish
Lol so true 😂👍
Mats & Morgan are from Umeå, just like Meshuggah. They are friends, naturally.
Wow! These guys are fabulous. Great drums and bass but really everyone is wonderful here. Thanks.
The bass player is awesome!
tommy tordsson is his name. got some lessons from him
MONSTER.
I Love the time signature that these guys play and create their music in!These guys are very talented,creative..
I'm completely new to everyone here except Morgan - this band is amazing! Just absolutely rocking!
Mats/Morgan Band is a band that features Morgan Ågren and Mats Öberg. Morgan is a drummer and composer and Mats is a keyboard player and composer. The band is a showcase for their virtuosic skills on their respective instruments as well as their compositional skills. Their music is difficult to categorize, containing elements of jazz, electronic music, waltz, dance music, avant garde/free jazz, techno, rock, progressive and modern classical music.
Word
Never heard of these guys, found them through my insatiable love of Frank Zappa, but I have to say that they're really good. Isn't the internet great?

This is amazing. Finally some unpredictable and fresh music!
3:06 I can loop that part and listen to it all day.
This whole song is incredible but the groove at the start particularly..... so good.
still here 2021. so fucking sick. the special defects project with fredrick thordendal was nuts.
It’s still SF sick
Not suprised that Mats and Morgan was invited up on stage with Zappa just 17 and 20 years old(think it was 1988)
Jimmy is the guitarist. The bassist is tommy tordsson and the second keyboardplayer is Robert Elovsson. It's all in the info.
Badass bassista!
Awesome precision!
Good mixsound in the song by them.
Sometimes, perfection doesn't have a top 40 hit. This is one of those times.
most of the time pefection doesn't have a top 40 hit!!!
@@zeuhltube Well stated.
You made me "alive" again. Thanks!
It just brought me some way back from the dead, too.
Flawless craftsmanship in music
WE NEED MORE OF THIS
Jag har spelat med Mats! Han är hur skön som helst!
Best clav player ever. So funky
This kicks ass on multidimensional levels.
This is AWESOME! Hic!
OMG that was insanely great. +1 fan
The part 1:27 to 2:20 is so good! Awesome rythm and harmonics.
Sinnessjukt bra!
Simply awesome
Wow!!!
This is just awesome!!!
I had never heard anything like this.
Bill Bruford's Earthwork maybe.
Very interesting music 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
This is a recording of the live show which was recorded and then played back along with the original performance. It's not a "lipsync".
the keyboard player is mats öberg. he´s THE mats in Mats/Morgan Band
Absolute Masters of their Craft! ;)
Man. The keys player's rockin' out must be totally organic. Being that he has not seen other people rock out. That is pretty badass.
12 years later and I'm thinking the exact same thing. Hope you're doing great, wherever you are 😊
Always wondered what George Duke & Bill Bruford would have sounded like together.
Now I know! Brilliant!
Just a shame that Alan Holdsworth wasn't able to show,he would have ridden those grooves like the silver surfer.
Mark Hartfield RIP
Bill Bruford's Earthwork is a good référence for this music. In my opinion, he has still 15 years in advance. Even after his 1987 album.
In a word, BRILLIANT.
This is fantastic
The problem with working from home due to corona is that I don't work. I'm watching stuff like this instead.
Mindblown.
See that "UR" sign in the upper right corner? It stands for Utbildningsradion or in separate language "Educationalradio", and they do not only radio but also TV. Those were the days. And now, for something completely different: The Larch, The Larch.
The drummer from Fredrik Thorndendal's side project! Dude is a sick drummer.
Yes he is, and he has played with so many cool musicians, including Zappa and Steve Vai. Brilliant.
This is brilliant!
THIS is epic, truly epic :P
Time signature? I'm struggling here!
God what a track
Awesome.....!!!!
Favourited.
if without movie, we might treat this as all sequenced... .
all players are great!
i play some instruments, i know the difficulty of letting bass output stable sound, this guy does it in such enigmatic high speed manual chip tune!
great stable picking!
ils sont chauvins ces Suédois, ampli EBS pour la basse et Nord Lead pour l'un des claviers ;-) c'est génial en tout cas.
awesome!! that's really nice, a great mind journal, in mexican spanish we can say: que poca madre tiene eso!!!
God fucking dammit... Dat groove at 3:06...
2:22 ftw
this is too awesome
Its like tribal tech performed a Frank Zappa composition produced by Fredrik Thordendahl for the Alice in wonderland sound track
Your appreciation is extremely precise.
What a nice comment :P
There are types of musicians, you have performers, songwriters and both. Performers are people like Steve Vai and these people. Then you have the songwriters, people like Paul Mccartney, John Lennon and Brian Wilson. Then you have both, which is very rare. People who can both write brilliant stuff AND perform it as well. Point is, Mats & Morgan band are supermusicians, but they don't appeal to people who are not like them. Hence, most people can't understand what going on.
I don't remotely understand what's going on, but I like it anyway.
That little squealy noise at 5:14 makes me laugh. Sounds like some weird creature singing.
thats the crazyness ;)
that groove @3:06. and then a second helping!
If only this was the musical appearance on all these American late talk shows...
@Bebopopotamus
mhmhmhm
maybe i wasn't in the mood O.o
You made me come back to this, and i found it a lot more enjoyable
I tried dancing to various beats of this track. As a result, I've been in intensive care for the past 6 months to repair a broken pelvis and arthritic air-drumming fingers. (kidding)
Am I wrong if I want to headbang to this?
Nope :D
You're not alone my friend! Head-banging to complex rhythmic groupings is a special pleasure for me!
It's all about the rythm!!

year of this please.
btw this rooocks!
Elements of King Crimson. superb. :)
i love how all the comments for the MM videos are about the bass player...yes, he's awesome. but so are the other 4 of them.
still love it!!
Why did you remove your comment? I read it on my feed and I think other people would find it useful!
"The intro is 4/4.
The next piece (at 0:07) is 21/16. I count it like this:
3, 2, 2, 3, (10)
2, 2, 3, 2, 2 (11)
But of course the drums make it all sound even more odd :)
Well, later on there's a drum break (at 1:27) in 4/4 followed by 10/16
(2, 3, 3, 2)"
Now it's just a case of counting it out and seeing if it's correct... :s
capillarian187
Thanks for that !!!!
Thanks 👍😘🇸🇪
The most funky and absurd groove ever, huh?
You can count this in 21, subdivided in cycles of 10 and 11. Morgan actually wrote this out in 4/4 though.. 10 bars of four with one bar of 2/4 to even it out..
Very nutritious.
I transcribed this as in 7 but your break down is actually more accurate. While your numbers do add up to 21 meaning three cycles of seven, it's your numbers I feel are most accurate and I'm greatful of your break down as a result
@ glad I could help! all credit to Morgan Agren though - he sent me his chart when I asked for clarification.
@@prestonparish oh wow, that's interesting. I've had some correspondence with Morgan myself, but not like you have had! This tells me that you've proven your transcription ability and accuracy well to him and not only me. His responses to my efforts before were short comments of support but nothing more. Your more in-depth sharings from him are not a surprise to me considering just how well you deciphered his complex work. I ain't lying by the way. I've three correspondences from Morgan and regarding my work on transcribing certain tracks of his. Your 10 and 11 measure counts were not my findings at that time and Morgan's responses to me were only thanks for my interest. I can share them with you if you don't believe me but it's inconsequential, your correspondence with him was of actual value and this is why I know for a fact he had shared his composition with you! Irrespective of whether you figured the numbers out yourself or had convinced agren to share the numbers with you after, you've shared your knowledge here after and that's worth everything to the rest of us. If you want I'll share my exchange with the guy but simply it was my trialing my own counting and him recognising that I was close. But he never offered me his own chart nor a correction. This point is where your work is being recognised and qualified! Good job I must say and thanks for your clarification of the proper count and break down. Its important you share your discovery here for the rest of us. That's your contribution to others improving themselves ya dig. Fair play to you
Jimmy is the brother of Morgan Agren by the way and Jimmy has his own band
this sounds so much like a hellish offshoot from Stewart Copeland's soundtrack for the PSX Spyro games
whow they are all so good! and i agree 2:30 is so awesome
Amazing stuff, contemporary ELP,Gentle giant, King Crimson, i know Mat, fan of Zappa, pretty darn cool.
That snare is delicious.
People who like this are good people - end of story.
Hopefully, everyone who's watched like recognizes Jimmy Agren on guitar. The two brothers have made music together for longer than Mats Morgan. Jimmy's pretty damned amazing too, something this clip doesn't make very obvious. Check out his new song "Happiness Is A Walrus"
YOU'RE THAT GUY WHO DID THE GANGNAM STYLE COVER! WOOOOOAHHHH!
Intelidjent Music
To those that talk about these guys counting. Morgan, the drummer, is not big on counting per his own words. I won't put any more words in his mouth than that. I can't speak for Mats, Jimmy or Tommy as I've never heard the question asked of them, but Morgan plays by memory and his own feel. At least that's the impression I get since he doesn't count.
banger.
This is the craziest, funniest, funkyiest most progressive, jazz ive heard in the Last 5 years
Sweden's finest!
Thanks youtube for recomending this one
This song is clearly the best unicycleing song
the beginning has the same sound as A Certain Ratio Do The Do, or is it flight?, just more eminent played.
WOW 4:21
I loooove them.... I do know they love Zappa, Holdsworth, Gong, King Crimson and so on.....
Meshuggah - Shed at 5:06
Isn't 1:30 a Meshuggah breakdown too? I can't name the song it's killing me
