Generally when you collect data you have an idea that from how many people the data is collected. Also if the mean is give that means the total observations are known.

So if you take 51 on other side of the = it changes it’s sign from positive to negative for example
if X + 50 = y
Then X = y - 50
Other way
50 + x = y can be written as
X = y - 50
