      How can you tell? There was NO good angle or close up of his foot touching the plate. Stop crying!
      Garvey tried to score from first to home on a base hit with his short little legs. Ridiculous! He wasn't even running hard and besides, the Yankees won the whole thing so it's moot! As a matter of fact they won it all again against the Dodgers in 78 too.

    I'm trying to figure out why the plate umpire was so far out of position on that play. The only reason a plate umpire should advance toward first base is if there's some sort of play possible at first base and the first base ump has moved away from the bag to watch for a catch. Clearly, we have a bounding ball hopping into the outfield. There's no play at first base--and with six umpires on the field during the World Series there's seldom a need for an umpire to wander away from his infield position.

  • @superbrownbrown
    @superbrownbrown ปีที่แล้ว +1

    *It amazes me that there are so many people commenting on this video that Garvey was safe. His right leg was over home plate as he slid on his left backside, and he never brought his leg down to touch the plate before Munson tagged him out. His backside also didn't make it to the plate prior to Munson tagging him out. The umpire was definitely out of position, but he still made the correct call. Garvey was out.*

  • @jackkitchen737
    @jackkitchen737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    All this shows is how poorly the cameras used to catch the action. Great job by Rivers, who cut a loping Reggie Jackson off. Wise decision by Munson, in going out to get the weak throw and lunge back for the tag. But the Umpire obviously was not expecting a throw home, so he was out of position. You can't see if Garvey got the plate or not, from any angle. But I remember seeing a picture in Sports Illustrated (I think) that shows Garvey's foot in line with the back of the plate, which would have meant he had slid across the front portion, before Munson's tag. Most umpires go by "did the runner get to the plate first" when they can't see him actually touch it, and therefore call them safe . This one did not. A huge play.

    HORRIBLE call. Ump was out of position and just took a guess. If the Ump had not blown that call the Dodgers would have won that game instead of losing in extra innings. They likely would have gone back to LA with a 2-0 lead but we can't say that for sure because Martin may have managed game 2 differently if they were down 1-0. The Dodgers roughed up a tired Catfish Hunter in game 2 .... Martin MAY have pulled him very early and it could have made it a closer game. But this bad call, allong with blown no interference call with Reggie Jackson in game 4 of the 78 series basically hosed the Dodgers out of back to back World Championships.

    What was Jackson doing? He should have been charging in on that ball and fired, but instead, Rivers hustled over from center. I wonder if the Dodgers third base coach saw Rivers field the ball and sent Garvey based on Rivers' weak arm. Smart calculated move that should have paid off. Lasorda must have lost years off his life from the 77 and 78 series.
