Why your art SUCKS (and why it actually doesn't)

I think artists are too harsh on themselves. Just chillax :)
I get it, though. I really do. Thanks and have a nice day everyone.

what I noticed is that mindstate is REALLY important. I was demotivated for few days and since I draw every single day, I noticed how bad it turned out comparing with my previous exercises. I watched some videos and got my mindset in a way I was almost delusional, where I thought "I'm the greatest", convincing myself that I actually am that good. After I've got into that mindset, even if didn't last long, the stuff I drew looked so good I almost thought someone else drew it
Keeping that state of mind is hard, especially if you're someone like me that judge themselves harshly all the time, but when you get into "the zone" of that mindset, all your efforts shows it's fruit and you draw stuff you couldn't imagine you could draw. It's like practicing every day a language, you think you're not improving and you are bad, but when you stop even for a second to think that and actually speak with someone using that language, you suddenly start speaking pretty decently and surprise yourself
the difficult part of it all is convince yourself that you're not that bad and at least try to treat yourself like a friend. If a friend is starting to draw and it's slowly but surely improving, you won't tell them "YOU SUCK, WHAT IS THAT? WHAT'S THAT ANATOMY??" you try to encourage them, point out their mistake but mostly praise their effort and good points. Try to do that, even if I know very well it's not easy

It's a really common statement, not comparing yourselves to others or taking it at your own pace, but giving a bunch of reasons and a goofy court cause as an example makes it stick a little better.
Thanks for the video and sharing your own experiences in this kind of state too!

I think you're right that social media does in fact affect us in making us give ourselves unrealistic standards and comparing our skills to others who have probably drawn for years compared to yourself and because of that, it can be a big demotivating effect ( it certainly is for me. )
I've had stages throughout the past 10-15 years of wanting to draw and actually drawing, then stopping for one reason or another, then getting back to it and stopping again, and I do often find that one reason to it is definitely both comparing my art to others and having standards way, way above my league. I think my skills aren't too far from that childs attempt at a human and my proportions are terrible, but that shouldn't necessarily be something to beat myself over.
I'd like to be able to draw both digitally and traditionally.
Thank you for this video. It really hammers down what my wife has told me a number of times and I need to stop being damn stubborn about it and take the advice to heart. 😅

I resonate with this on a exceptional level. First, this video is astronomical! I hope to see more of your content especially with a strong message. I have been fighting with my art because I continue to compare myself to thousands of people via social media. I recognize drawing for fun is the best solution especially because my story or reason for drawing is different from those I compare myself to. The only one to compare to is my past self because I didn't have the information i do now than then. I'm learning to appreciate the art journey despite being hard on myself in art. Thank you again for speaking on this topic ✨

wow, thank you for the help! what you said about learning anatomy first and then trying to mess around with it was something I really needed. I’ve been obsessing over making my drawings look somewhat on the realism side, even though I’d say I have more of a cartoon style. it can really stress me out sometimes, but what you said really gave me good advice. I’ve been happy with my art style so far, and I’d still like to learn anatomy, but now, I’m not as pressured to do it as I was before. =)

I just wanna say that this video changed my perspective on how i view my art. I've had really bad anhedonia about my hobbies and it's caused over a one year block but now thinking on it this was something i did to make myself happy to express myself to have fun I don't need to be jealous of others, i should be inspired by others, be happy about my progress of going from crappy stick figures to full poses. idk its hard getting back into art but ive found myself enjoying it a lot more recently since ive realized that art is a piece of me its something that I have done my whole life and just giving up on it is like removing a piece of myself. Im happy i set my tablet back up thank you. shit at this rate maybe ill create music again lol.

    why your art SUCKS!
it because you just need more "skill" to improve your art. human never feel fine with everything they have. they want more and more.
just like when you call someone art "beautiful" and they said : no it not that good.
maybe people who judge that your art bad or not. is yourself
that why im here to watch guide lol

Honestly found your video by chance and I'm really happy with TH-cam's recommendations for once lol- But seriously this is really helpful to me as an artist. For the longest time I've just been wanting to draw perfect Picasso art (or at least in my eyes) and just be able to bring my characters to life- but have been struggling with just trying and just in general honestly
I really appreciate this whole video and thank you for making it, I also love your humor and style (but fr tho I feel your enthusiasm from across the room that's such a mood) and I honestly think your art is at least B tier for me- so like, I won't compare but I think your art is pretty great ❤
But most importantly this video is just giving me the will and motivation to draw again, which is really saying a lot! I know I don't have to actually get better and be professional level, but I at the very least want to bring my characters to life, just like you do and I always get mad at myself for not doing a perfect job at it. But like you said, I'm just probably having a bad day or like, I need to sorta get there- uh if that makes sense lol. But anyways I really appreciate this video (and honestly your vibes make me wanna be your friend lol) and I hope you have a wonderful day 🎉

    OBJECTION!
Your honor, the defense has offered no solid evidence to back up her case! The art world DEMANDS perfection, and it is up to the artist to deliver that perfection to their client! I certainly wouldn't want to by slop made by a 5-year-old "artist" who wants nothing more than to scribble on a piece of paper! Why, then, would an artist waste precious time drawing like a third-rate romanticist child when they could instead be using that valuable time actually perfecting their craft so that they can meet the demands of social media? If an artist cannot motivate themselves to at least do that, then that is the fault of not only the artist for not pulling up their rear and get practicing, but also the fault of their creativity not delivering on the work that they could be doing.
(Don't take this comment seriously. I just wanted to channel my inner von Karma. I believe this is the type of argument he would make.)

Woa, I really needed to see this uwu Lately I've obsessed myself with the idea of becoming a furry artist (It's one of those dreams that I've been putting on the sideline for far too long). I started this June and I've made some progress. Some days it's fun and I allow myself to make some memey stuff and awful drawings without overthinking, but other days... It's specially bad when I tried to transition into digital painting. Everything is new to me and everything I try to do ends up being a mess. I've become frustrated even though it's supposed to only be a hobby (my daily job wouldn't let me practice all that much anyways). Your video made me realize how badly I am approaching something that should be fun and fulfilling. I thank you for that and you have a loyal subscriber now :P

Well, the live model drawing might be superfluous, but let's make an analogy. If you want to write a good poem, then you first have to know your abc's. You then have to know how to spell words, then how to use grammar etc. etc.
Art is the same, you're not gonna create good stuff if you don't know the fundamentals like value, colours and edges, unless you draw something that's highly stylised, then you might get away with it.
If you want to get good at drawing realistic humans or anything, you will have to do the so called ''boring'' stuff. Even highly stylised stuff is going to benefit from you knowing how things actually work.
That last point is really striking though, I haven't really seen any kind of similar mentality in any kind of field except in art. From personal experience, I play the piano for a bit but idc if people are better than me at all and that counts for a lot of things. But not visual art, what is it about visual art that makes a person so ...competitive? This is just a trap...

When I was young I would earn crazy money for a painting but now I can't even give my art away, well I can but no one seems to want it. It's the same with my original music.( Never made much money off my music though but people seem to like it.) I can understand losing popularity but this has been on another level. No comment is worse than criticism. At least you may get something out of criticism. Indifference is a killer. On the positive side doing art will always be a part of my life because it's fun. There's only so many pictures you can hang on your own walls however. Thanks for your content.

8:44 thank you. Thank you so much for saying this. I will never understand why if you want to draw in a non-realistic style (anime, cartoon, etc) you are supposed to draw and study realism first. Makes no sense whatsoever. If you want to have a specific style, you should have to study that style directly. Especially for a neurodivergent like me, if I study a bunch of realism and then I want to draw characters in like a manhwa style, they're going to look realistic, because that's what I practiced; it's not going to magically turn into the style I want if I studied a completely different thing. It has been one of the biggest struggles I had lately, and I hope I find a way of finally drawing the way I want.
