I’m quite confused on this matter if the jury did rule in favor of the USFL why did they not give them the money they were asking for clearly they thought the NFL was a monopoly therefore they usually give the sum that the plaintiff is asking for so this seems to pretty much surprise here.
Basically they ruled that while the NFL is a monopoly (as are all pro sports leagues) that was not why the USFL was failing. In reality the fact that the USFL made it for the 3 years in the spring, with tv contracts, shows how that monopoly is tenuous at best and only applied to fall football. The USFL failed because of rampant overspending by some team and rampant underspending by others, which resulted in lopsided games. Steve Young signed a 40+mil contract which was insane at the time (and was spread out over 40 years because of that fact), he was making more then some whole teams. In fact the only team to make a profit was a team that didn't even win half its games. They made a profit by not spending anything on players.
I think the bigger question is why the NFL was only required to pay the one dollar? If they were found guilty of being a monopoly, should there be stricter punishment?

Later the CFL tried US teams that had an unfair advantage, over their Canadian counterparts, they were exempt for the import rule which meant you had to have a minimum amount of players from up north. In American they couldn't have that because it was in violation of Labor Laws.
