Check out my new video - how to make beads from a plastic bottle and wire - learn how you can decorate these beads and give them a different look th-cam.com/video/A1MEtfBZHzo/w-d-xo.html
If you want to stay beads transparent, Ellie, you can try to put hot bead into cold water for fast cooling. With slow cooling, PET plastic has time to crystallize, and become opaque. If beads after fast cooling wiil be difficult to remove, you can heat them up again to temperature below the melting point (120-160°C), then the plastic will be softer, but not cloudy. And I think, the needle can be lubricated with thinnest layer of silicone oil (using a cloth or cotton swab) for easier bead removal from the needle. And a hot gun provides more stable temperature, than a candle, so you can get beads without bubbles inside, which can be formed from overheating, or from the moisture contained in the PET-plastic. 3D creators drys the PET-filament (in vegetable dryers, for example) for several hours before printing to eliminate bubbles.
Thank you for all the advice, I will try to do it in those ways as well. When I melt the plastic, I try to melt it only on the surface, not to melt the part that is close to the needle, that's why I use a metal knife with the help of which I spread the melted plastic on those places where there are holes or there are parts that are not are melted and I form a smooth surface, so that I don't have to completely melt the plastic, just for the reason that it doesn't stick to my needle. By the way, I like the bubbles, but I will try to make it without bubbles. I will definitely try cooling them in cold water, the beads would really be more beautiful if they were transparent.
Awesome advice, Ive been needing clear beads and now I just might get them, thanks! Ill try that silicone oil trick too. Heat gun also takes away possible soot marks, thats why I use it anyway. I sorta like the bubbles, to me they add to the uniqueness, but Ill try to avoid them for clear ones :)
@@ellieart4233 As a bubble fan to another :) Ive been coloring my clear plastic with alcohol markers, but I cut the strip horizontally, color it (the part that used to be inside if the bottle), heat it and let it curl onto itself, I havent tried your way (but I will!). When I want more intense color, I sand the surface a bit. Just in case you have some permanent markers or alcohol inks lying around and wanna try if it works your way too. Some blues might turn more purple, some blacks almost greenish color, so there might be surprises, just test it out first.
In MCAST they never insisted on that they even took us for garbage dives where they told us it's ok to get asbestos (the school was getting out of the old British war time ceiling because it's poisonous and can get you cancer)
Depends on the plastic. For the vast majority of plastic out there it only releases fumes when burt but not when melted. Most plastic, like what you find for plastic bottles for example, are completly harmless to melt.
melting plastic does NOT release fumes. Burning it does. But at least staying in ventilated area is a good idea, just in case you accidentally burn them.

Making Beads is so cool & it’s beautiful. This technique is called Lampwork when used with colored glass rods & propane torch. The ventilation of your workspace is very important. The fumes, vapors, even when your handling the plastics hold toxins In your video you line up your items used in the craft, please show the mask, ventilation & if you have safety glasses. Some younger artists might not think about the safely issues. (For themselves & others in their home) I make glass beads with flower shapes inside each bead… it’s a magical transformation.💞
Hi Molly, have you got a TH-cam channel? Where can I see you work I would love to follow you. Also, thank you so much for the advice on ventilation and safety approaches. I did not see it until you pointed it out.
Melting plastic, in particular, can generate and release pollutants like microplastics, bisphenols, and phthalates. All of these are toxins that can disrupt neurodevelopment, endocrine, and reproductive functions. Inhaling burnt plastic is bad for you because it can expose you to a number of harmful chemicals. These chemicals include benzene, dioxins, particulates, and toluene. Each of these chemicals can cause a variety of health problems, ranging from respiratory problems to cancer.
Been looking for some easy diy beads tutorials but couldn't find any good ones and today i randomly stumbled over this video and now im totally trying this!

I have been collecting bottles for years using them when paint. But if I don't paint too often my over grown collection of bottles goes out to the dump, which defeats my purpose of saving them from landfills. Never thought about turning them in to a piece of jewelry, and I do Viking knite, these would he perfect to weave into a wire piece. So brilliant! I must try!

When backyard burning was allowed, plastic containers were never allowed because of the toxins they give off. If you’re heating these up you need to be in a super Duper ventilated place, like next to a window that has a fan blowing OUT. Or maybe directly under the exhaust vent of a range hood with the fan turned on. Better yet, outside.
Lovely! Congratulations! Try to insert some golden or silvery metalic beads before you melt the plastic forming more beautiful gems! you can also use different coolors together as green and blue.
I am careful not to burn the plastic, but to melt it as far away from the flame as possible. Of course, during melting there are minimal fumes even when they are not visible and when they are not smelled, but therefore I recommend working with a face mask and working in a room with good ventilation. I work near a window and I recommend that anyone who tries to do this, work near a window. If the air flow from the open window causes the flame to be restless, then it should be at least slightly open or open for a few minutes while we take breaks from melting the beads. I think it is enough to take all those protective measures that are taken when working with epoxy resin or when working with varnishes and sprays.

@@erikasanchez7972 It's not that toxic, if you cut one single bottle.

Love this! I'm inspired by paper beads because of recycling, but this is next level. Thanks guys.
@@ellieart4233 I love what you do, I am a little concerned about breathing the fumes. Not all poisons have a smell, I hope you're being safe!
