    Recently, I was in an expensive outdoor store and saw a beautiful basswood canoe paddle. In my shop, there is a lot of left over basswood from my grandad's carving days and one of the pieces is really long; perfect for a paddle handle. Canoe paddles are a perfect mix of function and form. They should be comfortable to use and move efficiently through the water, while showcasing beautiful woods and awesome patterns. I decided on basswood to run the length of the paddle from blade to handle, and add some walnut, maple, and teak striping to add width and color contrast. These pieces were glued up and clamped together to make the paddle blank.
    Instead of using a pre-printed template, I drew half the shape of the paddle onto a long piece of paper folded over. I cut it out and unfolded it to reveal the full template. Afterward, the template was attached to the blank using spray adhesive and I cut out the shape using the band saw. It is important to leave room on the outside of the template so I could sand up to the lines. There will be a lot of sanding on this project so I left a lot of material after the rough cut.
    You could use any number of methods to shape the paddle; spoke shaves, cutter heads, sand paper, each of these vary in aggressiveness and speed, but for my first time shaping something like this, I used a sanding disc on my angle grinder. I took my time and made very shallow passes with the flap disc, making sure not to take off too much material. Furthermore, be sure to alternate sanding each face of the paddle as you approach the centerline so you don't over-sand and have a unbalanced profile. Taking light passes allowed me to make shaping decisions as I went. Overall, I went with a slightly convex profile on each face that met at a semi-sharp edge. The length of the handle has a rounded shape that fit the size of my hands really well. At the end of the paddle, I sanded a comfortable grip that has a slight indention to fit the curvature of my hand. I was super excited to see how nice the shaping turned out using such an aggressive tool. The paddle was sanded smooth with some 200 grit sand paper on my orbital sander.
    I researched how to finish a canoe paddle and couldn't get a clear answer on recommended methods. Spar urethane is used on many outdoor projects to protect the wood from the elements, but some people say that is it rough on the hands. One article said that a wooden canoe paddle had to be rubbed down with oil each week to ensure a quality finish, but that is way more care than I intend on giving. I decided on using the spar urethane because the paddle wouldn't see heavy use. The oil-based finish really made the contrasting wood pop and after sanding and applying a few coats, the paddle was ready to go.
    Josh and I lugged the heavy canoe down to the water, but I noted how light the paddle was. The basswood is light, but very dense which makes it great for such a labor-intensive object. In conclusion, the paddle held up great to being push against rocks, smacking the side of the canoe, and propelling me through the water. I am super happy with how this project turned out, and I think its simplistic yet timeless style really fits my granddad's old canoe. If you liked this project, check out more of work!

    Working with another fellow paddle maker, he had me fiberglass reinforce the tip to help strengthen it from all the impacts it takes. Just thought I would share that tip. Looks great!

    • @jamesgrimwood1285
      @jamesgrimwood1285 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I used to go river canoeing, and our paddles were either plastic or wood with fibreglass reinforcement for the same reason. For proper reinforcement, you can add a small piece of aluminium along the edge, since a paddle isn't just for moving water around, it's for pushing your boat off the beach/river bed too :)

    • @AnthonyBowman
      @AnthonyBowman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Just the tip?

    • @wrightdu83
      @wrightdu83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Anthony Bowman Not sure if your making a joke or being serious, but in all seriousness, yes we would apply about a 2” wide strip of mesh fiberglass and fold it around the tip, then apply the resin and allow it to harden.

    • @reaganharder1480
      @reaganharder1480 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      and as for why it's just the tip, that would be because the tip is the only part that really even benefits from it (unless you're abusing your paddle, the wood is plenty strong enough to handle the load itself), so putting fiberglass elsewhere is a waste of money. plus, i've heard that on the shaft the fiberglass could get worn down to the point of causing splinters. Haven't confirmed that one for myself though.

    • @wrightdu83
      @wrightdu83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the shaft we would take tapered strips of wood and use a birds mouth technique to assemble them in which the way they make hollow mast for sailboats. Then hand plane each of the edges to give it a comfortable feel in the hand. It created an oval shape more than a round.

    I've made a few paddles and a tip I got was to add a hardwood spline (I use ash) at the blade tip to make it a bit more "robust". I also added fiberglass tape over the blade tip. These two together add minimal weight, but add tons of protection!

    Nice build and great first paddle. It does look a little short for you but everyone has different taste. As long as it reaches the water... I like to make my shafts more oval as it adds stiffness and where it thins / tapers down to meet the blade, allows flex. Kind of like a shock absorber. It is supposed to make paddling easier if you do it all day.

I love to work with my hands too, and am thinking about pursuing a trade when I get out of high school. I made a canoe paddle last year with help from the head of the Canoe and Paddle club that I'm a part of at school. I found it really interesting to compare our methods while watching the video. There were definitely things that we did differently, but your paddle looks great! Good job. :)

    Great video. When I am doing something like this, I cut the wood in half, run them through the jointer, spray paint each half, then reglue the halves. This way I will always have a centerline and don't have to keep redrawing it. I have a big + running the whole length so I have a vertical and horizontal centerline that doesn't have to be redone

    Great job on your first paddle. I haven't built one yet but it is on my short list for my SUP and my research suggests doing the following things differently:
    1. Glass the blade to protect it from rocks etc.
    2. Rip the shaft in two parts and laminate it back together rotating one piece 180 degrees. It will make for a stronger shaft.
    And like others have said, it's time to build a canoe!

    Bob, how about casting an aluminium tip for the paddle? Cut the bottom inch off, drill out a mortice or a couple of holes for dowels. Make a mold from the cut off tip and add the mortice to the tip, so it's all cast in one piece. Then grind and polish the new tip and attach with epoxy.
    The aluminium tip won't degrade if it gets scuffed up, the paddle won't be much heavier, if at all and the paddle will look cool with a silver tip. You could send the tip to be anodised a cool colour for extra points.

    I always love your videos. But this is better in that you put it in real world use and still provided better support for it. Thanks Bob. Your videos are always great

    Great job Bob. Say, quick tip if when paddling solo in tandem canoe, esp. in wind or choppy water: sit on BOW seat, facing backwards (might wanna use cushion if you have a buttocks/crotch contoured seat!). Keeps you closer to center, giving less mechanical advantage to the wind on your bow.

    I like to add a layer of fiberglass on just the blade for strength, then varnish the whole thing for UV protection.
