Marcus Aurelius reminded himself in those very same pages of Meditations the reasons why he was here on this planet, what his nature demanded of him, what his duty was. He carried on and found relief and purpose and even joy in this.
No matter who you are or what you’re going through, the same thing is available to you. Inside your soul, Marcus would remind you, is peace that you can retreat into any time you like. It’s ok that you’re tired-it’s understandable and perfectly acceptable.
Just use the resources available to you and most of all, stick around.

@@JigsawLoks770 I too have stuffered greatly in my life, stranger. Hardship is never nearly over but an ongoing endeavor. I can only encourage you to read Aurelius' meditations if you have not done so yet. It helped me greatly to accept that suffering in my life, which will hit me no matter how hard I want to try to avoid it. A big proportion of that suffering comes from within ourselves and the way we think about and look at things. Changing your approach and thought process to all what life throws at you can immensly alleviate the corresponding pain.
No book or speech in the world will make life free of suffering. Thinking about it the right way though, can make it a lot less unplepasant. Keeping a clear mind in these rough seas you might be sailing through these days, may even help to avoid unnecessary affliction in the future before it even araises.
If Aurelius' style of writing is not for you, you may have alook at John Sellars' "Lessons in Stoicism". A short and well structured read, outlining the stoic principles of thought.

    • @herzglass
      @herzglass 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +133

@@nackjicholson1940 Absolutely. Yet I think the meaning does not lie within the suffering exactly, but in maneuvering around it, so it loses in relevance. You might be doing what you are doing in response to suffering, but it's not the suffering that gives you meaning, but the things you do to mitigate it. It's a moral duty to make life better, even if it is yours, it will positively impact those around you

I lost my sister and brother in law four months apart. They were both 22 and I was 20. They left a 1 year old behind that I had to raise. I dropped out of college and quit my job. I moved into my parents house to watch my niece full time. I tried to raise her how I thought her parents would have. I didn't think I would have made it another 5 years because how much I missed them. How do you explain to a 1 year old mommy and daddy are gone? May God give u needed strenght.

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
I believe everything can be cured, just ask Jesus for an answer, if convenient medicine doesn't help it does not mean there is no cure. Sometimes just changing the diet do wonders. What's your condition btw? Get to know your condition better and see other peoples testimonies, do heavy research. Natural remedies are God given but unfortunately forgotten and pushed aside by Big Pharmas...
      Sry for my bad english.
      Luke 11:9
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

    That’s what kept me going.
One of my worst moments, I went to a thrift store. I bought some little wooden bird houses that I would give to somebody. Why?
You can make yourself kinda happy, but the only way to feel true joy is to make someone else happy.
The best part! You can do it for free. Give your time. A smile and a “hello”. Look for those as down and out as you, and spring a smile on them. Talk to them.

Give a chance to Jesus, his deeds and Words are real instructions how to cope with life. Asking Him for help is a way to go. Also, I would recommend you the story of Nick Vujicic. That is one true motivation. I know that feeling when is hard to get out of bed. Many people have won in the battle with anxiety and depression with Jesus help, testimonials are available.

And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
      Corinthians 10 13:
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

When siblings, family and friends were of no help and had no concern I was there to take care of things that mattered most. You are the designated person who will take care of what matters most and that is your mission. See it through with dedication, be strong and on the other side you will be rewarded. Those around us who live life without a care and without a conscious thought of right, wrong and what is honorable will fall apart in their lives and drift away much as dust in the breeze.

You may not be as strong as Marcus, but you don’t have to be… None of us have to be as strong as he was.
Just strong enough to live on. Despite the pain and hardship.
I feel as though I’m stuck in place, working tirelessly till one day I’ll fall. And I won’t have the strength to stand back up.
But… I fight on anyways, because there may not be peace now, but… When will there ever BE peace? In death? That in itself is a mystery. I cannot say for certain I shall find anything but oblivion then.
So I’ll live my life, prolong that end. Even if it serves no purpose I can live and die saying I tried. And I didn’t give up.
It’s fine to fall of course, just… Make sure you don’t stay down. Small as it may be, there is always a chance to get to a better place if you just keep walking. My friend, your soul is an enormous expanse that transcends dimensional limitations and even time itself.
Best of all, your soul space is yours to manipulate through your own will.
Envision a tall and majestic tower, completely ringed by an immensely tall wall.
Inside the wall is an idyllic and peaceful landscape. Small houses are scattered throughout that landscape, and the spirits and memories of those closest to you live within them. These spirits and memories are only the best times with these people; times when you felt safe and happy with them.
Now envision all the rage , hate, and anxiety in your self. Remember that it is YOUR rage and anxiety. It is YOURS to harness and control. It exists ONLY because you create it and allow it to remain.
Harness all that rage and anxiety and set it to guard the wall against all negative influences.
Yes, it takes work, but you can not only create a meditative space in your soul space, but you can also harness all the negativity within yourself and use it for your benefit.

I lost my dad in 2016 to cancer before my 21st birthday.
I had to give up college to pick up a job to help my mother with health issues to keep the house and forgo my dreams.
I got up to 200 lbs, hit the bottle daily.
    Contemplated death so many times.
Covid 19 had us locked away and I witnessed the death of two close pets. My cat Tiggy, and my dog Lily all in close proximity between 2020 and 2021.
I’ve lost friends to heroin, health issues and suicide
I stopped drinking a while and worked out for a whole year in 2019 and dropped 70lbs
I got engaged to my high school sweetheart we are going on ten years soon (2019)
My mother suffered a minor heart attack and stroke in 2019. Now me and my fiancé both take care of her.
I worked in a kitchen that was highly volatile and gained most of my weight back and resumed drinking and smoking a pack a day.
I started weightlifting again (too heavy) and got costochondritis at 26 which feels like a heart attack every day so I had to give up weightlifting. Costochondritis causes chest pressure, benign heart palpitations daily, left arm nerve pain, panic attacks, back pain, due to chest wall inflammation.
I lost another father figure to cancer after he just got a heart transplant.
2023 has been a fight. For seven long years I’ve fought, fell down, and stared into the void. As of November my costochondritis has stopped after a year. I found new friends, had a reunion with old high school friends. Made stronger bonds in my relationship with my fiancé. I’ve resumed weightlifting carefully. I’ve cut down my cigarette intake to only 4-5 a day versus a pack, and a quarter pack. I’m drinking only one beer a night sometimes two (starting to cut that out). I’ve seen multiple concerts. I’m taking multivitamins, fish oil. I platinumed Elden Ring and got to play the resident Evil 4 remake. At 27 with the costochondritis: I wanted to die, and then… I didn’t. The costo made me feel like everyday would be my last. I realized I didn’t want to die. I’m too young to die. I kept on everyday. At work, with a smile on my face. I’m finding my strength again. With Christmas near, it reminds me that it was my fathers favorite holiday. Instead of losing my will, I’m going to celebrate this Christmas for him. I’m going to live long and celebrate and be there for my family and fiancé. Life has knocked me down. It’s time to climb back on the horse.

This message from Marcus Aurelius is so ancient and refreshing at the same time. It is easy to come through tough challenges, not seeing results (or barely) and still thinking that everything will work out because “you think positively” or through “motivation” and bs like those. Marcus Aurelius advices really help you go through the most difficult moments in your life. I’m so glad to be able to discover the stoicism and that he wrote his personal diary. I'm sorry for your loss. Please pray for healing. And yes, God exists. You are not obligated to believe me, but I will nevertheless share my story. I used to be agnostic and mentally mock religious people. But when I was going through difficulties (personal insecurities), God spoke into my heart and helped me. It wasn't a physical voice. It was neither in my ears, nor in my head. But in my HEART. It sounds absurd, and there are no words to describe it, but it was true. And the love I felt in my heart was the greatest feeling in the world. It is stronger than the kindest mother could ever love her children. A love that takes away any sadness. Now I don't just believe, I KNOW He exists. At that moment, I wanted to hug Jesus as tightly as I could and thank Him for all His blessings. He will help you through struggles. Even if you don't believe, still talk to Him, like you would talk to a friend. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. And if you TRULY want it, it will happen. I can't tell you when or how. That's different for everyone. But He will guide you to the truth. And He will ease your pain. He is the only one who can. JESUS CHRIST IS OUR SAVIOR. Wishing you the best.

Even in this so-called modern times with our technology and innovation.
    Thank you for your wisdom

What have I adopted from stoicism? Don’t let anything or anyone be your ruin. Don’t let anything or anyone have you become undone.
Keep yourself in one piece…mind, body and soul.

What if there's nothing or no one that's the cause of my misery, but rather a combination of myself and my circumstances? What if I imagine the ideal future, yet I do not really show any feelings. What if I still have hope, yet I simply have no energy or enthusiasm to take action upon it?
It just feels like something is fundamentally wrong. Hopelessness is one thing, having hope yet no emotion or source of energy to act on said hope is completely unexplored territory. Maybe I do not have as much hope as I think I do. There's definitely a root cause for everything, but there's no clear path.

Then in that case my advice would be to simply do what’s in front of you mindfully, giving it your best, day in, day out.

@@tubax926 Your comment begins with self-deception. "What if there's no one that's the cause of my misery, but rather a combination of myself and my circumstances?" I think you answered your own question. You can change yourself and your circumstances (to some degree, at least). Get a piece of paper, a pen, sit down, and be bluntly honest as to what is making you unhappy. Then explore options and interventions and apply them. It's the sense of inertia that is causing your misery. Action is the antidote to the kind of depression you seem to describe here. Doing so little as taking a good walk or exercising or fixing a meal for an elderly neighbor.... You may be living with incessant judgmental brain chat so become conscious of what's going on there, starting treating your brain like any other muscle that needs to be disciplined, and stop putting yourself down. I was a hospital-based social worker for 34 years. What you are describing is quite common. Consider volunteering, it gets you out of all the self-focus and self-criticism. Self-creation is an adventure. Good luck!

Helped raise my brothers since I was 11, my best friend died of an overdose when we were 19, my mom is homeless and I am overcoming addiction problems. Yet through it all I push through every day and just got out of navy boot camp and am starting a new chapter of life across the country, living on my own for the first time at age 22. My finances are good, I’m in shape, but the internal pain I go through is almost unbearable. I still keep my faith strong and know God isn’t done with me yet, and he’s not done with you either.

At 20 I lost both my parents i am 24 now 6 nearly 7 years without my dad and for without my mom and I try to keep that same positive attitude that I’ve always had just because I know that it isn’t gonna help me to just be sad about it but the times that I am sad I do let people know and normally they try to help me through that. I feel like that’s the point in life is to try to help others through their suffering, try to help people understand why they’re in the position there and how they can get out of it without having to feel responsible for being the one that put them in it but being responsible for being the one that got them out a bit. I miss both of my parents every day every day I wake up sad I lost them but happy I’m moving in their light still

I've had too many experiences with people checking out of life. I think life can be well-lived by simply "being useful". If you're useful (to yourself/planet/others), everything else will fall into place. So, be useful and see what happens. Peace.
