  • One of the most rewarding things about teaching SCUBA is helping people overcome fears to find success. This success translates quickly to the rest of a diver's life. I especially enjoy teaching girls and women to dive, then watching their lives transform for the better. Kudos to Jennifer for overcoming her fear today and successfully completing a skill in the pool that she could only dream of doing. "I did it!!!!", she said, elated. :)

    Congratulations Jennifer

    It is interesting how easy it is for people to be critical of Jennifer. Please keep in mind that she is an open water student who overcame much fear to learn SCUBA, and this was her first attempt at this skill. As an open water student, she did not have to perform this skill perfectly. If she had been working on her divemaster certification, it would have been required that she perform the skill to demonstration quality. I did point out room for improvement later, but she earned congrats!

    Dear Gabrielle, Miss Jennifer really did very well she is also very confident, and she could do it only because of your efforts, however, breathing from primary regulator in the right position is part of the performance requirements as there will be resisting in breathing if you placed upside down. you may ask your student to repeat the skill until she master it. Remember always that repetition is part of Mastery. cheers :)

    She did it, and that's the most important thing. There's always time to improve skills, but one has to get the first step done. Okay, the poor woman looked a bit anxious at the beginning, but I guess everybody is a bit nervous when doing such a skill and being watched and filmed. Thumbs for her getting it done!

    Congrats indeed! And yes, SCUBA Educators International has a well deserved excellent reputation with high standards and regard for safety and mastery of skills.

    Some people are nit-picking how she did it. And I agree with the instructor; SHE OVERCAME AND DID IT!
    Now it's time to follow up with more practice and make it even better. Forget what lame regulations an org may or may not have, use your own high standards, your own brain, and practice some more.
    But you're right ; starts with OVERCOMING, she did it! and that's huge.

    That was interestingly amazing from her. Getting into scuba gear while underwater. This was the first time I've ever seen it.

    Ill add that i was on my advanced course but we all used to challenge the OW students if they wanted to try it! Its very frustrating but great fun trying.. and does eventually make you more comfortable and relaxed in the water..

    Thank you, and I agree. Again, this was her first attempt at the skill, so I appreciate that you recognized that repetition helps with mastery!

    Great. It is up to the students to decide what gear to put on in what order, and I can tell their comfort level in the water when I talk with them on the surface about what they are going to do, and they change their minds sometimes when they are performing the skill. I always tell them that it is easiest to perform the skill on the bottom of the pool, so I put on my weight belt first. As Jennifer's instructor, I was within arm's reach of her at all times and would have assisted if needed.

    Thank you, Charles! I agree that water comfort is key, and this bail in task is fun to watch students master. Ah, I remember those challenges you mentioned well when I was doing my divemaster certification at FSU (when SEI was YMCA). We don't torment open water students to that extent :), but we definitely give unexpected challenges to leadership candidates who want to earn divemaster or higher. Thanks again for your kind words!

  • @GabrielleGabrielli
    @GabrielleGabrielli  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What a great question! This skill is something that SEI requires because it helps people be more comfortable in the water regardless of the challenges they face. We work up to this skill through smaller tasks, and when students are able to successfully complete this skill, they have needed confidence to handle situations that other people may panic over. It also helps them with problem solving under water. I love your attitude about how cool the skill is, too! I really enjoy doing it. :)

    Problem solving? I guess we always did it for fun on the first dive whenever we went on a boat dive when I was in Okinawa. Seems that you guys had fun and that is all that really matters to me when diving

    My Naui instructor made us do this - BUT we had our air tank off and we had to shout "naui forever" so our lungs were empty also.and if ANY opart of our gear broke the surface we had to start again. Its much easier to suck all the air out of the BC first then jump in and try and lay flat on the bottom of the pool with the weight belt over your lap then you can sort out your mask and fins as it keeps you pinned down. Then roll into your belt and put on your BC.. easy!

  • @mikaelglasgow

    As the skill is carried out at the surface it strikes me as ill thought through idea to attach the weight belt before securely attaching attaching the BCD. This student clearly manages to swim the weight up but if stress got too much, or cramp developed she might have been pulled down and separated from her air source. Doubtless as the instructor you'ed have been ready to assist.
    For fun I have done a similar exercise but sunk the gear to the bottom first and then kitted up there.

    I am not sure why you feel the need to berate this student and put her down, but your comments are insulting, so not only will I delete what you are saying but I am blocking you. Try to be a kinder person, please.

    Manuel, you are entitled to your opinion but it is not based on facts which are SEI standards, nor is your assessment correct that she did not master the skill. Jennifer is an open water student, so the skill was performed satisfactorily. If she had been working on her SEI divemaster certification, she would have had to redo the skill. :)

  • @EB7GLB

    Jenifer where are you from.

  • @GabrielleGabrielli
    @GabrielleGabrielli  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Are you PADI certified? If so, they do not require this skill or many others that SEI requires.

    • @KenCostlow
      @KenCostlow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PADI does not require it -- but I seem to recall doing it anyway. It's been 18 years ago, but seeing Jennifer going through the routine jogged my memory. Again, well done, Jennifer. It's easy to get frustrated while doing it, but she kept a level head and performed the skill marvelously!

    Don't understand the purpose of this skill for a recreational diver? When would it happen in a real life diving situation? i would have hold onto or sit on my BCD, put everything on before proceed to descent. Having say all that, i would try this on my next dive trip, it's just too cool to not try it. :D

    If you do any performance, make it perfect!!
    Her snorkel stuck into her mask strap..... her primary regulator above her mask, i dont think so she put it in a right way to breath.....her octopus and spg is dangling.
