Marcellina'a aria is a very curious affair indeed. It has the highest tessitura and the most brilliant coloratura of all the soprano arias in "Figaro" and seems not really to belong to the role. In 1992 Sarah Walker sang the role at Covent Garden including this aria, very wisely transposed down to F major, where it makes more sense. Jane Berbié has it in the original key in Solti's recording with Ramey, Popp, te Kanawa, Allen and von Stade.
Mozart wrote arias for singers' abilities, character delineation, dramatic situation & verbal text -- not for some pre-conceived standardized notion that a "seconda donna" or comprimario role shouldn't get the showy high coloratura. Disagree strongly that this is out of character for Marcellina. In general pre-20th Century singers were a lot more flexible == before our horrid Fach system of categorizing roles became so powerful.

Dear Cecilia Guerra Vilardo: My text actually says that Hilde Gueden and not Hilde Rössel-Majdan sings this aria. But since on the CD Hilde RM is indicated as the singer, I decided to adhere to it and explain the context in a comment.

@@klauswrede9612 Yes, and therefore your title on this video is somewhat misleading. You should change the name to Hilde Gueden, and therefore also the thumbnail to be a picture of Gueden, not Rossel-Majdan.

I never got why Hilde Güden sang this aria in that version.
It is said that her voice didn't have the strength required for this aria. Hilde Güden obviously tried to alter her own voice gradually, which makes it only more strange.
Klaus Wrede Don't get me wrong, she sings it like it's nobody's business, but it always struck me as odd.
Curious thing though is that this seems to happen to Hilde Gueden in at least one other occasion. She sings the Czardas from Die Fledermaus even though her role is the servant girl and not Eisenstein's wife (who actually sings it) in the recording with Karajan
@@LocutusBorgOf Incorrect. Gueden sang Rosalinde in the von Karajan recording and the Czardas is Rosalinde's aria. Erika Koth is Adele on that recording.
