I have an Acura RDX and my dad has an XT4. We live in different states, and last summer when I was visiting him I drove us on a short road trip. My impression compared to my Acura was that the engine did not sound as refined. However, what I LOVED was the fact that you can turn off the all wheel drive. I was able to hit 36 mpg cruising on the highway. My RDX would NEVER do that well….I get maybe 24 mpg on the highway. To me that is a huge benefit. I also thought the stop/start feature was the smoothest I’ve ever experienced, and that the cabin materials were on par with the RDX.

Yep, my 2024 Cadillac XT4 (0-60 in 7 sec) is quicker than my 2014 Toyota Highlander (0-60 in 7.6 sec) that I traded in. XT4 also handles better too. I upgraded from a 2014 Toyota Highlander (the 2024 highlander drove the same and is pretty much the same chasis and interior so it's boring). The Cadillac XT4 has no turbo lag that I can feel. I actually prefer the way Cadillac has executed the AWD system on demand and always there if and whenever you want it. I don’t want my vehicle doing much of anything all the time, i do prefer having the option to engage. I also appreciate that Cadillac’s drive modes actually change things mechanically, very unique especially for this class.

I rented the 2025 XT4 putting on 1,100 miles. At 6’7” I had no issues with leg room. My issue was with the amount of steering wheel adjustment. It does not match the seat adjustment. My arms were getting tired reaching towards the wheel. Caddy needs to allow more extension
Great overview with comparisons. I have been shopping around and I was down to the XT4 and the Lincoln Corsair. I am going this weekend to check both out and I am leaning toward the Caddy.
Cadillac designs are always classic and always classy! The GLA ad GLB interiors are too ostentation. The NX is too plain. The MCR upgrades are superb!! I'd get this, but the new Buick Envision Avenir comes out this summer and it has the same power train as the XT4 and more standard features that are options on the XT 4. But the XT4 is awfully tempting.
Just went to test drive the XT4 and XT5 yesterday, and I'm so glad I did. My eyes have been fixed on the NX and the X2/X3, but now heavily considering XT4. 😊
@BeadnWithNicoleB No, I don't have anything yet, but hopefully, I will have something in the next few days. I drove the XT4 Sport, and I really like it. I also drove the X3, X1, and NX350. I have a Volvo XC60, and I love it, but I'm looking at different brands. The interior of the XT4 is so nice, and the drive is good as well. My biggest complaint was that I found the front passenger seat to not be as comfortable, and it is a bit smaller than the NX and X3.
My wife switched from a grand Cherokee summit to one of these 4 weeks ago. The caddy was $30k cheaper and it is easily as nice other than the lack of HP. Needs 30-40 more.
I have the JGC. Really good but it is my second, after 15 years now is time to change to something different. This xt4 looks fantastic. The new JGC prices now are nuts anyways, they lost a customer.
I know reviewers like to talk about the benefits of all-wheel drive in snowy environments but unless you're on very steep inclines, front wheel does just fine. You really only need to care about the all-wheel drive options when the car is a rear-wheel drive architecture.

Man Cadillac knocked it out of the park with that interior, it’s absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully they improved the driving dynamics cos the last one I drove was not all that good to drive. Also a little disappointed about no hybrid system, the XC40and UX are my favorite due to their hybrid system, I love the idea of driving a luxury vehicle and getting well above 35mpg, if the caddy had a hybrid system. Unfortunately the UX is too small. It would shoot to the top of the segment imo
I know it's an unpopular opinion but Cadillac and Lincoln have been killing it with their vehicles lately. Thet are by far on my short list of luxury cars.
@cch201992 you must not have even watched the video. This has actual real wood and a completely soft touch dash which most of the competition do not. So no, not "cheap plastic"
@@dtay8913 I owned one in 2019 it's cheap plastics everywhere could they have updated the interior sure but probably still drives terrible is super loud inside and gets like 23 mpg on premium gas it's a loser all around 🤷🏼♂️
@cch201992 OK that's your opinion. I subscribe to Alex for his opinion. The drive is on par with everything in the segment except for the most powerful engine choices and the same is said for the mpg. Alex literally covered all of this in the video. I get it, you don't like the vehicle but Alex and I along with several others, apparently (since it's the 3rd highest seller in the segment) value technology and luxury appointments.
@@dtay8913 so what you are subscribed to Alex so am I. A reviewer will never give an honest opinion on a vehicle because if they do that reviewer will loose access to the companies vehicles they review that's common knowledge. You are going to value the opinions of a person who drove the vehicle for a month max over a person who OWNED the vehicle for over 2 years!!!... You are a special kind of dense... You think I didn't watch alexes video before I bought a xt4 🙃 should I get the link for his video before? He can have his opinion but he will always sugar coat it. I OWNED the xt4 is trash I owned a chevy Colorado ZR2 the top of the line zr2 has cheap plastics everywhere!! It's a gm problem. That zr2 was 49k my Laramie power wagon I bought for 52K and it had all the same tech and was a way bigger vehicle and had leather was loaded essentially and it had a winch something the zr2 you have to pay extra for...make GM make sense they are cheap garbage full stop🤷🏼♂️
The best thing about the XT4 is it seems GM is finally letting Cadillac be Cadillac with minimal concern for the other GM brands. We're finally getting away from 30 years of consolidation. Little things like different buttons and switches than standard, off-the-shelf GM materials matter.
GM Authority is strongly hinting that production of the XT4 will cease February 2025 and eventually be replaced by the Cadillac Optiq, using the Chevy Equinox EV drive train.
Just bought the GT4 here in China (a China only model). Similar to this one but "coupe" and even sportier look. Really comfy interior and ride! Only US$26K brand new 😍
It’s nice looking, it’s just has horrible mpg. Cadillac needs a hybrid option. Makes zero sense to drive this around town at 23mpg, when you can get a Lexus with high 30s-low 40s mpg.
I think just depends on if any of the Cadillacs features or differences are worth $100 a month extra to someone (just a rough calculation on mpg differences with a ~$4.50/g fuel price). I personally wouldn’t want to pay that much extra, but I’m sure some premium-minded shoppers won’t necessarily care or notice.
@@naveenthemachine lots of people buy boring and just want a reasonably comfortable and familiar form of transportation. Nothing wrong with that, especially if it does provide some benefit to your wallet versus something else that could be seen as equivalent.
honestly, Cadillac is getting to places i thought they would never get to. i always categorized this as compact because when i think sub-compact i think Ford Ecosport. which is a go cart compared to this.
GM forcing you to manually enable AWD is frankly dangerous. My Mom had a first gen Traverse that was "full-time" AWD as there were no drive modes to adjust, how it should be, it just sends power to the rear when needed. Her second gen has a drive mode select that lets you go between 2WD, 4WD, Sport, and Trail. If you put it in sport or trail, the next time you start the vehicle it will go back to 2WD, thankfully it will stay in 4WD if you leave it in that. She had a really hard time driving in the snow one time and when she got home I hopped in her car to check and what do you know it was in 2WD because she accidentally changed it once 🤦♂
GM"s system isn't automatic but in FWD mode it gets better fuel economy than it would if the mode was automatic. In these days of EPA ratings, I understand the choice. Too many owners don't read the owner's manual.
@@tman2damax I get that. GM's approach isn't automatic and I'm okay with it. Winters here are such that I want full-time not part-time AWD. My daughter's 2019 Equinox is similar - in the warm months, she's in FWD and in the winter it's AWD. In the other months, the tires are more important than the drive mode.
On the seat back at 14:14, that’s the Cadillac Chevron which was introduced in the form shown in the 1950 Cadillac logo just below the Caddy’s Shield. Before that the 1940’s logo was more a “V” shaped mark below the Cadillac Shield.
Awesome review. I never watch a car review all the way through, but with yours I did. I find it curious that people looking at a car in the $50k range worry about fuel economy.
Mine too - Just took the wife car shopping a couple days ago and never even considered this car but when I showed her this video she loved the interior. Never even knew this car existed until this video popped up lol.
It's a shame they don't have an electrified powertrain option, I imagine it would only help sales and build a larger customer base who won't even look at Cadillac without it. -Travis
I feel better getting my 2024 Cadillac XT4 and drive it out of town knowing that there are way more Cadillac dealerships that can service my vehicle. I did test drive the Stelvio in 2019 and I liked it but dealerships and parts are far and few in between. Same reason why in 2017 I bought the Corvette C7 instead of the Alfa Romeo 4c.
After just getting my new X1 m35i a couple of weeks ago, I’m imagine liking much about the XT4 unless I really wanted Cadillac style. It was one of the models I looked at but just falls short in many areas.
I think you might be mistaken on the FWD system always on at start-up. If it's like other GM vehicles, if you're in AWD when you shut it off, it will start up in AWD, except if you're you're in Sport, tow or off-road (AWD).
I made this point as well. The source of the confusion is that there are multiple AWD modes and only one of those reverts to itself in subsequent ignition cycles.
Nice review, as always! (BTW, I like your Barbour jacket -- I have one just like it! ) I like the look of this SUV and its size. I do have concerns though about Cadillac reliability.
The XT4 does look very handsome inside and out. GM did well with the color choices and their materials are great. That steering wheel has a very clean, simple appearance. The distinct lack of piano black is a breath of fresh air (for once). But when it comes to the dash ... just ... no. What is with the enormous screen? 33" ... SERIOUSLY? Things being hid behind menus that should just be buttons and touch screens that show nothing but fingerprints is stupid. Part of the luxury experience isn't hunting and pecking for things in menus and waiting for them to load. There was nothing wrong with analog gauges on a dash. In fact, part of luxury is an air of class, which is something a digital dash doesn't offer. I don't mind an infotainment screen or a screen between two dials, but vehicles nowadays have gone much too far and rely on screens too often. So ... apart from the massive screen, I fully agree with the rest of this "baby" Caddy.
This isn’t as simple as 93 octane = X and 89 = Y. The actual power output will depend on a variety of factors including your altitude and temperature. Regular unleaded will still deliver the max horsepower under many conditions (especially winter) but may not in the summer in Phoenix.
I wonder if the AWD versions have a better ride. I’ve found the front wheel drive XT4 has a terrible ride for a luxury brand. Like cheap rental car bad. I do like the new tech upgrade, but not enough to pick it over competitors. Even the Q3 rides better, but nobody buys them because you can get a better deal on a Q5 since they are made in North America.
Ok, so I think you are being a little too skeptical about why Cadillac is using newtonmeters rather lb-ft with their secondary badging. They are making a push to become a global brand, thus using newton meters-instead of lb-ft makes a lot of sense. Also, going forward, Cadillac wants you to be able to compare the power of gas vehicles with electric vehicles. Using engine size is pointless because there are zero liters in electric motors so that nomenclature wouldn’t make sense, either. Now I do wish Cadillac wouldn’t round-up by 50s, but you aren’t going to project a global image by sticking with the English system of measurement, and we don’t use the English system to measure engine size in any case.
My Mom really enjoys her XT4. I love the way it looks, rides, and drives. Honestly though (and im probably in the minority here) i would love to see less giant cinema screens and other tech in favor of more horsepower. Or at the very least they could offer an optional 2.7 or 3.0 Turbo motor in the Sport trim - or perhaps even offer an XT4-V model - that would get my $
Maybe I'm getting old (hehe), but that huge screen is an enormous turnoff for me. The XT4 has a sharp exterior and looks to be a good value in this pricey segment. For me, though, I'd be shopping a 2021-23 model to avoid that monstrosity!
I would take the Mercedes GLB250 over this. I’ve driven the new XT4 and it drove just like a Chevy. The GLB feels distinctly German. I prefer the “simple” tech with the split screens in the GLB as well as it looks great and is easy to use. The seats in the XT4 were also very uncomfortable
That’s funny, we test drove the XT4 and the GLB250 as well as several other contenders and we had exactly the opposite reaction. The XT4 was by far the most comfortable (72, 5’8”, 160). The main contender now is the Lexus NX350 but even at my size the driving position felt claustrophobic. The only thing that concerns me for the XT4 is reliability issues mentioned on Cadillac forums.

Says they can tow 3500lbs but in the specs it says max tongue weight is 200lbs and trailer max weight is 2000 lbs. so tongue weight on 3500lbs is usually 350lbs or more. So this vehicle can’t tow 3500 lbs.
I drove an XT4 2 tears ago. Im sorry, but unless its changed dramatically since then, I totally and completely disagree. Compared to the Germans, it drove horribly. The ride was discombobulated, the handling was significantly torpid, and the power was meh. Cheapness abounded in the interior look and feel. Again, it might have been updated since then, but the one I drove stunk.
the XT4 interior is WAY MORE USABLE compared to the X1 and the infotainment is 100 times better than the Current XC40.... I have the 2020 XC40 with the older sensus but Id take the XT4 vs the X1... the X1 center console is useless
Cadillac would kill with a Motown Edition that had a signature sound system and instrument themed touchpoints. Think brass trim and actual piano keys, some felt trim to really get the jazz mood going, and sheet music texture (ala Inifiniti washi paper) instead of wood.

@ktay2124 you tested all the SUV brands I looked at. BMW is my fave with Lexus as a second.
@ktay2124 the XT4 is nice too so I'm not 100% sure yet.
How to activate advance approach lighting from the key fob?
My wife switched from a grand Cherokee summit to one of these 4 weeks ago. The caddy was $30k cheaper and it is easily as nice other than the lack of HP. Needs 30-40 more.
I have the JGC. Really good but it is my second, after 15 years now is time to change to something different. This xt4 looks fantastic. The new JGC prices now are nuts anyways, they lost a customer.
Would love to have a Voltec version of this car with 70 - 80 km of winter battery city range like the Volt got!
Yes!!!! 💯
The xt4 top of the list in It's vehicle class
Love the tall tail lights, it's classic Cadillac design language and they add character and are a good substitute for the fins they can no longer use.
Great presentation
Love the high brake lights and their size.
I know reviewers like to talk about the benefits of all-wheel drive in snowy environments but unless you're on very steep inclines, front wheel does just fine. You really only need to care about the all-wheel drive options when the car is a rear-wheel drive architecture.
The Cadillac XT4 has no turbo lag that I can feel. Every other car that I test drove had turbo lag, whether short or long...Mercedes GLC300 (least turbo lag), BMW X3 (a little more turbo lag), Porsche Macan S (even more turbo lag), Honda (way too much turbo lag).
The Cadillac has these features that TH-camrs miss:
- lighted logo behind the dashboard
- pulsating safety seat (most cars only beep)
- left behind child in the rear seat alert
- capless fuel tank (like my 2017 Corvette C7 )
- umbrella storage in the doors (like Rolls Royce)
- active noise cancellation (like my 2017 Corvette C7 with Bose)
- power passenger seat with lumbar
- free 5G hotspot
My other car is a 2017 Corvette Stingray in stickshift.
Nice job Alex & it's a good SUV for me to buy.
love cadillac
cadillac king of lux😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
If you think cheap plastics is "luxury" then sure👀
How do I get my iPhone map inside the gauge screen? Every time I push the map button, google maps pops up.
XT4 for me. We have an XT5Vand love it
Me too, I might get buried in the thing!
Didn't know they made a V version of the XT5.
Excellent, detailed review!
The Lexus counterparts are significantly more boring
You may as well just buy a rav4 instead
That's one of the bid drawbacks vs the competition, there aren't the variety of powertrain options that you can find elsewhere. -Travis
@@naveenthemachine lots of people buy boring and just want a reasonably comfortable and familiar form of transportation. Nothing wrong with that, especially if it does provide some benefit to your wallet versus something else that could be seen as equivalent.
@@ALMX5DPso then why wouldn’t those shoppers just get a Prius instead for less?
I thought GM dumped Apple CarPlay which is a horrible move. Glad to see it’s still in this vehicle.
10:43 - "Not like a Hyundai or Mercedes or something" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Looks like it has the right controls as physical controls for once!
Between 14:09-14:16 that’s a chevron. That chevron first appeared on Cadillacs in about the 1950s.
Nice car. And I like that the turn signals are high up. Those vehicles with the low turn signals should be illegal.
Being from Canada, I find it comical that you need all wheel drive cause it rains!😂
Can’t believe you have to go up a trim and add an option to get adaptive cruise when it comes standard on a Corolla ☹️
honestly, Cadillac is getting to places i thought they would never get to. i always categorized this as compact because when i think sub-compact i think Ford Ecosport. which is a go cart compared to this.
@11:55 the embroidery work looks like the Cadillac crest.
@@djd2819 ok, it can be FWD, until it detects slip then enable AWD, like every other brand does and GM before their latest generation of products.
I purchased a Caddy xt4....😊 thank you for the review
Awesome review. I never watch a car review all the way through, but with yours I did. I find it curious that people looking at a car in the $50k range worry about fuel economy.
It’s not being “worried” about it, it’s actually surprising how it really is economy fuel ⛽️ 🤑
Why is the Defender, not the Evoque, listed on the headroom and legroom measurement chart?
If I don't go electric, this is at the top of my list.
Mine too - Just took the wife car shopping a couple days ago and never even considered this car but when I showed her this video she loved the interior. Never even knew this car existed until this video popped up lol.
Just go electric we had one traded for a Tesla much happier 🍻
You could get the Cadillac Lyriq…
It's a shame they don't have an electrified powertrain option, I imagine it would only help sales and build a larger customer base who won't even look at Cadillac without it. -Travis
Love the landscaping
I know the Stelvio is low volume in this segment but where does that fit on the recommendations?
I feel better getting my 2024 Cadillac XT4 and drive it out of town knowing that there are way more Cadillac dealerships that can service my vehicle. I did test drive the Stelvio in 2019 and I liked it but dealerships and parts are far and few in between.
Same reason why in 2017 I bought the Corvette C7 instead of the Alfa Romeo 4c.
After just getting my new X1 m35i a couple of weeks ago, I’m imagine liking much about the XT4 unless I really wanted Cadillac style. It was one of the models I looked at but just falls short in many areas.
Well the performance advantage of yours is probably the best selling feature by comparison since you got the M35i upgrade - Nice car.
Surprised you made no mention of Super Cruise. It's arguably the best self-driving system available today.
How did you miss comparing with the Q3??
Alex, If you had told me I would be watching a video in which you recommended a Cadillac CUV.........😉
When is the way behind the times XT6 going to have this interior?
Good looking suv at a reasonable price.
It's sharp, isn't it? -Travis
This guy rocks OJs Isotoners all day long.
I've had an xt5 45,000miles,3 yrs zero issues if that helps but I have the 3.6,V6
Please tell me where your jacket is from! It’s incredible!!!! Looking sharp!
is there a new XT5 or XT8, bigger than 4 but smaller than Escalade
Probably be an updated XT6... and boy does it need it!
There's an XT5 and XT6, but there's no word on if they have been updated or when they will be updated yet.
The Chinese are getting the updated XT5 and it looks amazing. Wish we can get them too
Love the tail lights too. Could use a Hybrid
They think it looks cool
@@richardmorris6365 The piano black, the vehicle, or the digital screen?
That's a really nice interior upgrade! Shame bout the lack of engine options though.
I like that silver color
You forgot to mention HP figures is with Premium fuel, everybody puts regular gas in from what I hear so it’s less powerful with regular isn’t it???
This isn’t as simple as 93 octane = X and 89 = Y. The actual power output will depend on a variety of factors including your altitude and temperature. Regular unleaded will still deliver the max horsepower under many conditions (especially winter) but may not in the summer in Phoenix.
We have a 2023 XT4 and love it. Hopefully, by the time we need to replace it, Cadillac will make a hybrid XT4.
Or at the very least they could offer an optional 2.7 or 3.0 Turbo motor in the Sport trim - or perhaps even offer an XT4-V model - that would get my $
The infotainment screen is actually 8K OLED display, not LCD
Maybe I'm getting old (hehe), but that huge screen is an enormous turnoff for me. The XT4 has a sharp exterior and looks to be a good value in this pricey segment. For me, though, I'd be shopping a 2021-23 model to avoid that monstrosity!
The screen world isn't going to be everybody's thing but how the screens are implemented is still important; bigger isn't always better. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Agreed. BTW, Alex's competitive comparisons are the best of any auto journalist on TH-cam. He really lays it out!
I love this car only thing I hate about it is dashboard screen that should have build like other cars not hold with those chip
I hope cadillac goes rwd platform for the future larger suvs
I really enjoy your videos, lots of good detailed information. A turbo charged four-cylinder from General Motors. How long could that last?
Well beyond the first few owners I would imagine. -Travis
Interesting. Had a chance to drive one for a week in December and loved everything about it, except for its composure over patchy pavement
Wouldn't be a bad vehicle if GM wasn't selling your information to data brokers and especially your insurance company
The new changes make it a viable contender.
It didn't need any changes to compete! I drive a 2021 XT4 Sport and I wouldn't trade it for the 2024! I'll take mine hands down! It's a beauty!
They should offer the V6 engine in the upper trims
Alex rocks!
I upgraded from a 2014 Toyota Highlander (the 2024 highlander drove the same and is pretty much the same chasis and interior so it's boring).
The Cadillac XT4 has no turbo lag that I can feel. Every other car that I test drove had turbo lag, whether short or long...Mercedes GLC300 (least turbo lag), BMW X3 (a little more turbo lag), Porsche Macan S (even more turbo lag), Honda (way too much turbo lag).

@14:12: we call it a Cadillac “chevron”
Lots to like there, but actually having to SWITCH ON all-wheel-drive mode is bonkers. And calling it “off-road” is even more bonkers. 🙄
Will never buy electric love my Cadillac xt6 sport.
How can it be snowing where everything’s so green?!
Says they can tow 3500lbs but in the specs it says max tongue weight is 200lbs and trailer max weight is 2000 lbs. so tongue weight on 3500lbs is usually 350lbs or more. So this vehicle can’t tow 3500 lbs.
It's interesting to see how manufacturers from Korea are QUICKLY catching up to Cadillac quality and sometimes outdoing them entirely.
If you put it in Sport, it stays in AWD, by the way.
its sad to see a new SUV without a hybrid offering in 2024, at nice as this is i just don't get why its not a hybrid.
Except for the one-off Corvette, GM doesn't have a hybrid drive train. If they are developing one, it's likely 15 years away.
Wish there were an XT4 V.
You skipped the comparison chart to the Q3!!!
It might be time to drive one again if you pass by a dealer and have a few minutes. -Travis
I think it did undergo a pretty comprehensive refresh only a year or two ago.
Updated car interior and all
At least it wasn’t a piece of Asian junk! Consider yourself lucky-I wasn’t.
Surprising because GM has traditionally been excellent at chassis dynamics lately. It’s the rest of the car that often falls short.
the XT4 interior is WAY MORE USABLE compared to the X1 and the infotainment is 100 times better than the Current XC40.... I have the 2020 XC40 with the older sensus but Id take the XT4 vs the X1... the X1 center console is useless
Wait GM let us have Apple play ? Or is this model an exception? I thought they wanted to move away from it
Cadillac would kill with a Motown Edition that had a signature sound system and instrument themed touchpoints. Think brass trim and actual piano keys, some felt trim to really get the jazz mood going, and sheet music texture (ala Inifiniti washi paper) instead of wood.
the non-reclining back seat is a bigger issue than usual
