The movie is about a doctor turned serial deleter after his daughter's face was disfigured in a accident he caused. Out of guilt the doctor started kidnapping young women. He would surgically remove their faces in efforts of repairing his daughter's disfigured face. Hence eyes without a face. Even when I first heard this joint back in the day I felt it had a dark undertone to it.
I had heard that before, the French chorus is the back ground is wonderful, never would think that story behind the song is so dark, Wow. Saw Billy once, I wonder if he ever explained this song to the public.
Billy Idol is an icon of the 80s. He came up in the punk movement (hangin with the Sex Pistols) and then hopped across to pop-rock and become a massive star. Much parodied for his Elvis sneer and cartoonish 80s punk look. Great singer-songwriter in his own right though, and this song is particularly good. So good its been covered many times. It’s named after an important French horror movie from 1960 called Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without A Face). The film has a VERY particular plot, and is one of the most stunning and chilling mid 20th Century horrors. Pedro Almodovar adapted the idea into his brilliant film The Skin I Live In. I’ve always taken this song to be referring to a couple, or a duo of friends, and their descent into drug addiction. There’s a shot in the video of Billy’s arm wrapped in a rubber chord as though he’s tying off to shoot up heroin, then he’s writhing on the table like he’s coming down. The lyrics generally evoke someone trying to maintain their humanity, looking for it in their partner’s ruined face, while being irresistibly drawn to the seedier side of life. Or that he’s destroyed the relationship through addiction and the partner has left him haunted by their accusing eyes. Ironically while shooting the video Billy nearly became a face without eyes! It was shot over 3 days and then he took a flight afterwards and found that he’d worn his contact lenses so long they’d fused to his eyes 😱 He had to have them surgically removed before his corneas could heal!

Empress you are really discovering the pure magic of the 80s. Billy Idol is almost forgotten in this day and age. He has so many gems. May I recommend Sweet 16 by Billy Idol but there are so many. Otherwise a band called The Cars with Drive or else Whitesnake with Is This Love. Maybe Cindy Lauper with True Colours. My first proper memories as a child were Culture Club with Do You Really Want To Hurt Me and other songs or Eddie Grant with many songs.... My mum was heavy into music!
