To be honest, I don't see a compelling reason to buy this rack. Everything Rip mentions as a feature, you can do with virtually any other rack on the market, save for perhaps angled safeties (and I'm not sure what that's for). For the nearly $1,200 that this rack costs, you can buy a Rogue R3 rack, an Ohio Power Bar, and a Rogue bench, with some money left over. The R3 will also have 1" hole spacing for benching, and will come with an anodized finish.
Strap-safeties instead of pins: can angle, are much quieter, much less wear & tear on your barbells. Btw, you angle it so if you fail the weight rolls away from you (safer).
actually this rack is superior because of the DIAMETER of the safety pins and bolts and the ease of using the safeties. i am annoyed when it comes to using my pine and pipe and these cold rolled steel pins are much stronger and more durable than the westside model. i have an elitefts 2x2 rack and now im considering this one. the angled stuff isnt a selling point to me. no one is gonna do that because most want the safety of benching and squatting IN the rack, and those other short bolts are strong enough to hold tens of thousands of pounds so there is no need to angle anything. but i believe that is what makes this rack superior to other ones IF YOU WANT A BASIC RACK. now of course rogue, sorinex and all the other ones are geared towards all these fancy attachments which i dont plan on using. id rather use two barbells for dips than a MATADOR because i can adjust it to any height and any angle i want and i already have the bars, so less space there.
What did you use to drill the holes? I have a 3200 lb milling machine, so not a problem, but 39 holes per upright at 1-3/8" diameter...what does a "regular Joe" use?
I have several racks like Marks design that are from the early 70s Im 68 fwiw These rack have thousands of hours of use on them and are still in perfect condition
I'd buy it for $600. Considering it is such a solid, well built rack. But 1200 is ridiculous. I'd rather get a rogue rack if I had that much money to burn.
I built my own rack out of C-channel that cost seriously less than $400. And I made it 8 feet tall so my feet don’t touch the ground for pull ups. The costliest part was having a shop cut out the holes on their cnc plasma table.
Chris Wilson did you number the pin holes? Or leave it like titan fitness for the unknowing purchaser to guess at which is which for the life of the rack? #titanfitnesssucks
@J T Well since I’m the only one using the rack I just marked the holes I need to adjust to for whatever exercises. If need be you could paint on numbers with a stencil I suppose.
J T I’ve got a titan rack and upon first use, marked the pin locations with tape. Have never had to guess, just look at the tape. Titan has plenty to gripe about, but that’s an odd one for sure.
i tried to have a rip rack manufactured locally. i got cost estimates from$1500-$4000. i bought a pro maxima c-channel rack make in Texas for $280. it suit me fine.
Damn - I hate to admit it but I just LOVE the way this rack looks. Old School steel strength training. I was about to buy a Rouge R3 but damn this thing just looks too bad ass. LOVE the huge "bolt" J-cups. Not sure about the wood bench...only thing I question is how can I hook a landmine to it, but I guess I'll get the weight mounted one.
Just go ahead and buy a second barbell to do dips inside of our overpriced featureless rack. Even among fanboys, this is going to be a hard sell. Here's a fun game: buy this rack, then try to resell it without losing $800
For all of you bitching about the price, he put the plans online so you can build it yourself. If you can't be bothered to follow simple instructions then don't bitch about how much he charges for the pre-built version
The gym I usually work out in just dropped ~$3500 on each of 3 new squat rack/deadlift platform combos. I think this is geared more for commercial gyms rather than home.
CorpsmanBear🐻 any commercial gym going out of their way to overspend has to recover costs somehow. These SS gyms do it by charging members $315/month for 3 sessions a week
I think Mark missed the biggest (only?) selling point of a C channel rack. If you live in a humid environment and lift in your garage, the inside of your racks posts will rust because they are bare metal. I live in the SE and the inside of my Rogue monster lite rack has visible surface rust after just a couple months. I wish I could get in there and treat it. A c-channel rack would allow you to easily apply 3 in 1 oil or paint to every inch of the rack.
This is the first Mark Rip' clip that I've watched on TH-cam that sounds scripted. It doesn't sound like he really believes in what he is saying?! Where has his passion and enthusiasm gone? He sounds like somebody who has got a gun pointed at his head!
There seems to be an excessive and forced amount of eye contact with the camera compared to his usual videos, but then he is the only one in frame so it's a different dynamic I suppose
SS is trying to go more mainstream and to do this they don't want to trigger anyone's feelings. Customers often need to feel emotionally invested, like a brand is their new religion. If they have any reason to abandon ship, they will do so; and there are plenty of other equipment providers around. Notice this channel doesn't mention some subjects anymore, i.e. climate change (or was it global warming?) and GOMAD, which could trigger vegan customers. It used to be this channel was way more tolerant of people saying whatever, but don't you trigger anyone now, though. SS just might stand for Special Snowflakes these days. Unfortunately.
I bought one of these racks, two bars and 600# of weight for $700 back in 2017, I'm in love with the style but if I didn't get the steal of price I got i wouldn't have gotten this rack either
The reason c-channel racks are not common is torsional rigidity. Open sections (like c-channels) have very poor torsional strength. Watch how the rack shakes in the dip video. He'd be much better off using tubing and safety straps to meet the features he wants. It does look pretty metal.
i think its a good rack with some unique upsides my only issue is the guide pins all they had to do was drill a hole in the ends and put a pin in there and then it wouldnt slide out
The only advantage of diagonal pin placement as a j hook is the j hook pin will not shift or back out when re racking or shifting a weighted bar resting on the pins. I already have a Rogue RML-390c so I don’t need another rack but the j cups do move when shifting the bar position
Are the dimensions for this power rack (original depth) the same as those in the power rack plan in the blue book? I ask because they both look very similar but on the website it says this power rack has about a 19” depth but plan shows a 22” depth, yet both have the same 49” x 36” base.
Buy once, cry once. Looks like a solid piece of equipment that will last for generations. C channel is tough stuff, can smash it with a sledge hammer and all it will do is laugh at you.
the smooth is smooth so it doesn't hurt your hands. Well until the rust then your getting tetnis. Well you could oil it but good luck hanging on to the pullup bar. .
Why does it matter that you can use the end of the pin as a j-cup? With other racks you could just put the j-cup on the outside of the rack wherever you want... 2" between holes isn't a big deal, lots out there are 1" through the important (bench pressing) area. 3" is just ridiculous
It's a bit of extra flexibility. The main selling point, in my opinion, is the fact that you don't have to align the safeties /perfectly/ when you set them. Also, a lot of j-hooks just suck for re-racking weights properly; like they expect you to walk the bar in /exactly/ and drop it down on them.
I bought a Titan X-3 for 450 dollars. I don't see anything about this rack that would compel me, or anyone else, to shell out an additional 700 dollars.
Just because something is different doesn’t mean it’s better. You could probably get an R3, straps if you really need uneven safeties, and a dip attachment for less than that shitty rack.
I don't see a compelling reason as to why this rack is better than others. And unique equipment is annoying to get new parts for, either you hope TSS makes it or get a fabricator to make it for you and hope it works.
@@MrVigilanti But why pay twice as much even if it has better steel? How often do you hear of broken R3s? Do we even know this steel is better? Texas Strength Systems as made some bad stuff in my experience. This seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

There is absolutely no need for this outdated design. A rogue r3 rack costs less than this, is just as strong, and will accommodate a dip attachment and various pull-up bars. An all metal bolt as your j cup will destroy the knurling on your bars
