- We try to figure out what whiskey released in 2021 was best... Between Old Forester, Buffalo Trace, Jack Daniels, Blue Run, Four Roses, New Riff, Remus 5 and more, we had a lot to choose from. We blinded the top whiskeys of the year to see which Whiskey was the best from 2021!

Loved the list, but think a distillery only release on top was a little contrary to your general selection criteria. Yes, you own the bottle, but it’s more akin to a store pick than a general release. Good as it may have been, I don’t think it should have been on the list. Still, really good list overall and very well presented!
The list is "Best whiskey's we've had this year". We already released an "available" whiskey list where all of what you mentioned is taken into consideration. This was in 2 stores in kentucky and the distillery that had them and there were far more bottles than a barrel pick would have in it. Honestly, if it wasn't for people in the community we wouldn't even have seen a coy hill, stagg jr, or remus 5 this year and those all made the list too. Sadly SO much whiskey is getting hard to find if half of these were distillery releases we would've had the same availability on those too. This is why I keep buying random bottles/labels just to see who's doing cool things now. Cheers!

Going on record to say that's was the fastest triple flight I've ever seen Dan complete (even if it was sped up & edited) here's to 2022.
Best “whiskey” of the year… and no SMWS bottles!?!? Honestly, the only bottle I was able to get my hands on from your lineup was the Woodford Reserve Batch Proof 119.8. Excellent pour. My #1 goes to SMWS 30.108 “A Taste of Home” from The Gathering week. Cheers y’all!

Solid picks all the way thru. Well done gents! Surprised RR13 came in so low, but count it! Actually blinded Coy Hill against ECBP A121 and it destroyed it. Fully agree that one is a beast of a bourbon.
The New Riff is excellent. I was definitely one that ordered online and shipped to the Mitten!
I really like the rule that you have to own it.... if you ain't got it what good is it....
Yeah we go through a lot of samples in a year and trying to keep a sample for an end of year blind is just not realistic.
Why do you guys consider "nutty" to be a bad thing. So many nosing and tasting notes that are worse.
Blue Run is $80 whiskey with a $100 sucker tax
There are plenty other 14 year Barton's priced at 2x of the price of blue run lol
I remember people hemming and hawing about the Woodford 128 Batch Proof when it was released. I'm just glad I happened to go to the ABC store the one day it dropped in Virginia this year.
Agree with Dan about Stagg sticking with 2 larger releases instead of 3 already small ones.
Feels like a good move for consumer sake if barrels/yields/blends allow for it

Let me tell you how good WLW was this year... If Sean still hasn't found the latest Parker's Heritage by April, I will have mine at WWB4. But I doubt it is that hard to find.
We haven't even heard of someone having a bottle of it at this point.
Still kicking myself for not buying a Remus V bottle I saw when traveling out of state over the holidays...
I live in New York and no sign of Remus here but I was in Texas in may had a choice of Remus 3 or 4. Thankfully I did grab a bottle of 3.
Let's hope they keep this up and Remus 6 is awesome too!

Great list! The WR Batch Proof 119.8 was fantastic and my 2021 favorite. Can't wait to find R3 Series V because I found a dusty Series II in December and loved it. Keep up the entertaining videos.

Still really enjoy sam houston 15, in blinds it didn't stand up to even our low proof flights though.

Remus V was a chance pick for me. Knew nothin of it, but liked the bottle 😅. Kicking myself for not buying more!! Finished the bottle over Thanksgiving with the family. Will keep an eye out for Remus 6

Question, you're blinding some EXCELLENT stuff here, and in this video are doing it with 18 different bottles. My question is, what do you do with the leftovers in the glencarins? I can't imagine you just drink then that day, but maybe you do?

So I had heard that the RR 13 was really off profile and a fruit bomb. You are the first channel I have heard say it’s nutty. Now I’m confused!
When we reviewed it, it wasn't nutty at all and it was one of my favorite bottles we opened. In every blind it was nutty just like a red label russel's. Had never had that happen before.

I can’t find half of these. Which doesn’t even matter because I can’t afford any of them. I’ll stick to my WT101 and Elijah Craig SB.
We make an available list each year as well, those are normally much easier to find.

Only one of these I got was Remus Batch 5 and it's dang good so glad I got to try it. I'm thinking since I can't get any of the others that I should really go get a second bottle of it.
Remus 5 hitting so many people's top 10 lists and being 80 and easily one of the most available on most of these lists is awesome. High hopes for Remus 6.
Everyone putting 4rle in their top 5 makes me regret ditching one in favor of a cigar blend. I just like cigar blend better.
I 100% believe if we had magnus cigar blends this year they would've made the list.

On this list, I was fortunate to get the Remus V, OF BB and Coy Hill. Shockingly, the most expensive bottle I bought this year didn't make the list, JM Cigar Blend.
We never saw one or it probably would have!

Brown-Forman is my favorite distillery hands down.
Looking like the same for us these days... That being said we didn't see or taste a single pappy or btac from this years releases.

No Four Gate, Old Carter, or High West this year?
We weren't able to get our hands on many of the Four Gates or Old carters this year (had tasted a lot of the releases but didn't own them). We're both big fans of Old Carter and Four Gate though.
I have such a hard time finding some of this stuff. I think a top 10 stores video would be amazing. I live in MI so it would really benefit me !
Sadly we could literally only do it for Michigan and that wouldn't benefit many of our viewers lol. A&B Liquor, Wine Garden, Novi Party Store, Piccolo's, Smitty's, Total Wine, Livonia Wine Palace are all good shops.

Sad the only bottles on your list I found this year were ECBP (have all 3 and B is my favorite) and Remus V (which is my whiskey of the year). I did pass a few times on new riff malted rye bc I sampled it (Justin’s House of Bourbon) and didn’t think it was that special

Last week we did a list with more available whiskeys if that's what you're looking for. New riff was $60, Remus was $80 so they aren't all crazy.

As a 60-year-old, who has enjoyed bourbon for many years. All I can say is, I can't wait for the kids to go back to vodka or rum. The prices are just getting to be stupid money. Your #1 pick at an MSRP of $50 is on Cask Cartel for $700..
The number one pick was sold at the distillery and select stores. Of course it's more on secondary
@@brandon_sprague Doesn't matter to me if a unicorn rides it to my house. Not everyone can go to the distillery on a whim and sit there for 5 hours in line to maybe get a bottle. The point is Brandon, idiots that pay the secondary market prices are the ones ruining it for the rest.
@@chicagomike2111 That's my point. Clearly you had no plans on going to the distillery or one of the stores it was avalible in to get one, so why does it matter what the price is? You never intended to get one in the first place. MSRP was 50$ and anyone who chose to shop there while it was released could get it at those prices.
Secondary only ruins prices if you choose to pay it. Clearly you dont have to, but it's not worth complaining whenever you cant snap up a limited release whenever you want at msrp without putting in any effort
@@brandon_sprague Not sure what your life is like, but I work every day. As stated, I cannot just walk to the distillery and get a bottle. I am more than happy to purchase any bottle for MSRP. Currently I have a 250-bottle collection. Other than small outlets who will not even receive a bottle of Old Forester 117 or birthday there is Binnys who are also limited. Any of the few that do mark it up to these ridiculous prices.

None of these whisky’s are obtainable unless you pay an arm and leg. If you find them… except for the Remus. You can still find them
We have an available list that is a lot easier to find. These are also the best we have though, obtainable wasn't one of the categories that we have on this list.

List is a little generic and predictable. Very main stream bottles and hype bottles. Surprised you don’t try some small distilleries or craft bourbons.
Blue Run and New Riff are both small distilleries and are in the Top 10. What other craft bottles do you think they left out? Because I tried a ton of craft this year and none even are in the same stratosphere of bottles they blinded that didnt even make the top 10.
Check our best available whiskey list that went live last week. It's full of smaller brands/distilleries. There's probably a reason there's a lot of hype around distilleries limited release and the point of this video was to find the best release of the year. We had new riff, sagamore, blue run, and peerless in these blinds. Four smaller brands in blinds for best whiskey of the year is pretty damn surprising to me.
Also if it were predictable I'd have guessed pappy was first, wlw was second, birthday bourbon third, etc. It wasn't even predictable for us, there's no way in hell it was predictable for you. I would've guessed old Forester single barrel rye, wild turkey one we're both on the list along with stagg Jr and ecbp being high on it.

They just dropped the Jr label. It's just called Stagg now. George T Stagg is the BTAC version
Thanks for your perspective guys- always interesting / entertaining! Id like to suggest that you limit this list to bottles you own bc you found them yourself. If thats what you did, bravo! But if you own any of those bc you have friends in high places or in the right places, while thats good for you, it sets unrealistic expectations for the rest of whiskey-fandom. Stop feeding the fomo beast…is all im trying to say.

I realize its my fault for living in a state with terrible distribution and archaic liquor laws, but unfortunately the only bottle on this list I saw "in the wild" on this list was the Woodford (agree, great bottle). Oh and one lonely bottle of RR-13 YR stickered at $775 in a glass case. Any chance on a companion list of new releases on the bargain side of the aisle?

@@BourbonJunkies yeah, the Christmas thing was overdone. But I couldnt argue with the Juice. Im in DC and was lucky enough to able to snag a couple extras before it was gone forever. Thank goodness Mike makes sure his hometown gets some love.
How do you check the batch number on Stagg Jr?
It's basically just based on the proof, if you Google the stagg Jr proof you have it should say which batch it is.
@@BourbonJunkies That is an okay way to figure it out but some old batches have the same proof as the 2021 batches.
People were (and still are) confusing batch 17 bottles for batch 2 bottles, both being exactly 128.7 proof.
The only way to be 100% sure is to look at the laser code. L21258 (the beginning characters of the laser code for batch 17) means on the 258th day of the year, in 2021, it was bottled.
That might be an interesting video topic sometime. How to decode the Buffalo Trace laser codes.

We actually did a bourbon junkies one but it sold out to patrons in early access phase which none of us thought would happen...

Buying bourbon was more fun before watching you guys. Now I’m always thinking there is something better for the money. That said I enjoy the videos.
I still love buying bourbon. I just tend to focus on different labels now. I'm past only looking for value bottles now, just finding cool new whiskey with all the new labels on shelves is fun.

Thanks for all the content this last year boys. Curious on your thoughts/feelings on some hometown whiskey. Don't recall seeing any reviews on Michigan Whiskey proper. Ever try the Traverse City stuff? Had a bottle of their Barrell Strength Rye that was a candy bomb this year. Lil spendy, not a lot of age, but I loved it. I was thankful to get my hands on some goods this year...some even made it to your top ten. I was sadly denied the Coy Hill experience out here in Colorado. Little jelly. There's some good Michigan distillate and there are some pretty crazy/rough michigan distillate. At some point we'll have to cover it.
