  • Germany pledged to make its military the 'backbone of defense in Europe' following Russia's shock invasion of Ukraine two years ago. But revelations of intelligence leaks, equipment failures, and ammunition shortages raise doubt that Germany's military is a fit fighting force, let alone NATO's standard bearer in Europe. What do you think: Is Germany's military up for the job and fit to fight?

I don’t know about whether Germany is NATO’s “problem child” but it’s intelligence services are severely lacking in competence. The US and UK have already stated they don’t share certain info with the Germans for this very reason, this needs to be sorted if they want to earn their allies confidence back

Germany’s industry is capable of rapid modernization and growth. Germany’s military is capable of rapid adaptation to modern warfare and expansion of training capabilities. Germany’s government is incapable of enabling any of this in a timely manner or adequate scale.

This. Germany's government is capable enough, though. It's just not willing. At least the SPD. It's all about political will - or the lack of it. That has to change.
There is a lack of leadership in Germany, too. At least in certain quarters. German politicians have treated defence as a manufacturing business, unfortunately, rather than as a vital function of the state to protect its people. And to act in solidarity with its neighbours for which the German public as a whole hasn't demonstrated much enthusiasm. This lack of enthusiasm is, in part, because German politicians have for many years avoided discussing this subject seriously with the German public.

I believe that the German is truly slow. One example is the lengthy 24-month processing time for student files, even after most countries have managed to adapt their education systems in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This sluggishness seems to reflect how they handle other matters, not just in the education sector but also in processes like weapons.

If the germans violate the 2+4 treaty against russia (or the soviet union, but russia is the legal successor of the SSSR in that matter) , the 2 states are at the continuation of ww2 again.
Sunak, Biden or Macron have other options, plus they have a nuclear shield, which germany has not. So CLEARLY germany has to be more cautious than their british french or american "friends", who allegedly have military operatives allready inside ukraine. I think most people don´t understand this distinction, OR they do, and take a nuked germany as an acceptable loss.
If the 2+4 treaty is considered cancelled, no article 5 protection from NATO for germany. Then germany stands with their pants down.

Germany really needs to pull itself up. Greetings from Finland. Conscription is nothing to be afraid of to have and it actually might even help young adults to get that discipline training that doing reserve military training would do. It's a good experience to have for any young adult. Anyway if one side (Russia) is stating that you are our enemy, then whatever you believe you should take those threats seriously, Europe should not care what Russia thinks, but react to their aggressive rhetoric with decisive force. You don't bow to Putler's mafia group and Germany really needs to look at Scholz history with Russia little bit closer at some point.

@@Melior_TraianoHere in Finland conscription is viewed SO differently!! It is difficult to describe and I will exaggerate a little for you and others to understand how the thinking goes:
-it is an HONORABLE thing to do and is mostly something young men are proud of taking part in. Although it is an inconvenience.
-And family and friends and ofcourse the girlfriends(! 😄) are so proud of the soldiers.
      - As, with this tradition, we HONOUR our grandparents who fought to keep our independence and our beautiful homeland. We keep our promise to them, they did not fight in vain.
      - It is also considered as ”boy becomes a man” ritual. As the conscripts are young 18-19 year old they still live with their family, and this is the ”school to become an adult and you move away from home ( first to do the military training where ever it is in Finland, and afterwards the, now MAN, is usually independent and rents or buys his first appartment (and begings studying or working etc.
-Later it is always viewed as a great plus in your CV also whatever work you apply for.
-It is definetly not viewed as ”time vasted that you are forced endure” I have never yet met a guy who speaks badly about the duty. Ofcourse when men talk to each other about it they bring up the misery and hardships they had to endure 😄 But not in a negative way.
So conscription quite deeply rooted in our society. I can add that although women are allowed to do the conscription, 99% of Finnish men do not want women in the army. As in the Winter and Continuation wars, the women kept the country, families and industries running and helped with supplying and medical help of the army.. 33:03

It is why the US initially stationed its bases there. It wasn't until the 10s that Germany got a green light to begin really putting the effort into the military and Germany has to walk carefully given its past history. Perun does a fantastic talk on the dysfunction of German military procurement. Procurement cycles are too short, allocated monies are routinely canceled, procurement decisions take an incredibly long time, and these factors work together to make it an incredibly unpalatable environment for defense manufacturers. Essentially, if the political will is to create Taurus, it takes years to go from initial design, to pilot testing, then to manufacture. At any point in the process, the funding can be canceled, so a manufacturer could be halfway through building the plant, and boom, funding is gone. As such, defense manufacturers view Germany's procurement process to be unreliable, and if they accept a contract, they jack the prices way up to protect themselves from bankruptcy if the contract gets canceled halfway through the process. It's a miracle that Taurus even exists. Apparently, the procurement of standard helmets used by the US military has been held up for over a decade because someone is trying to determine whether American heads are sufficiently similar to German heads.

I find myself pondering the same perplexing question: How, in this modern era, do we still find ourselves embroiled in conflict? The notion of sending our sons and daughters to war seems archaic and senseless. Perhaps there’s an alternative path-one that doesn’t involve further bloodshed. Let us dismantle the war machine, not through battlefields and weaponry, but by dismantling the ideologies that fuel it. These war mongers, with their god complexes, are not representatives of entire nations; they are individuals driven by hubris and a thirst for power. It is they who plunge us into strife, not the collective citizens yearning for peace. So, let us wage a different kind of war-a war of ideas, compassion, and understanding. Let us challenge the very foundations upon which war rests. For it is only by dismantling the war mongers’ influence that we can truly aspire to a world where conflict is replaced by cooperation, and where the sacrifice of sons and daughters becomes a relic of the past.
Together, let us be architects of peace, not pawns in a game of destruction. 🕊

What to expect, german troops were using unsafe analog comms for years during Nato excercises...
Germans were for years either in the pocket of Moscow or they were a clueless useful idiots.
Either way, no shock on the fact that Germany is now paying the price for that, same as Ukraine.
