The UK is very much behind in technology safety measures. Internet scams are businesses in India with call centres that rip people out of thousands of pounds. Germany has spent a lot of money to protect their citizens with measures to not be targeted by these thieves. But with all the issues the country has right now, I don think this would be in the agenda to invest.

This also happened to me in December of last year in London when I was on a bus stop, I'm from Brazil, I was never robbed here but was robbed in London, I think because I used to think Europe was very safe and this kind of thing didn't happen in "First world countries"
Move to 6 digit pins rather than 4, delete banking apps use online banking at home instead, stop walking around with you phone in your hand all the time like you holding the holy grail. Also UK government need have more agreements with countries like Nigeria so that stolen phones can be blocked for usage.

There are cases with smaller rings at the back if you search online.

They use the account number and sort code to send a bank transfer to an account they have opened through a fake id and address so the police can't trace it back to anyone and the banks can't do anything about it once its left your account I don't think.
Another tip would be if you can get an e sim for you phone then do that and also for iPhone users (I don’t know on android) turn off control center on the lock screen so then the thief won’t be able to turn off the 4G/5G which may then help when needing to do the tracking/wipe the device etc Another would be to use a different pin for your banking apps than the unlock screen pin so then they can’t access the banking apps
