You shouldn't unscrew the crown in a wet environment (which would be a common reason for having wet hands) so it is probably not a bad thing that you can't, or at least that it ain't easy.

Fun fact about the Orient logo : the lion on the left symbolizes the company, while the second lion symbolizes their dealers and partners. The crown that can be seen above the shield symbolizes the customer. In other words, the emblem is supposed to represent the Orient’s respect for its customers and the desire to provide them with quality products.

I've had this Orient Ray II for about two months now and really cherish it! It's a qality watch, eye catching but not too flashy. Holds up great at the beach and the accuracy is well within acceptable limits. It's probably the best bang for your buck diver in my opinion! Thanks for the video, it influenced me to give this watch its place in my young collection.

great review! i've owned this watch for about 4.5 years and it has been performing perfectly. i had a friend regulate it for me and it holds at about +/- 5 seconds day and i'm fine with that. The crown is a bit hard to grasp but no big deal and the bezel is hard to turn HOWEVER if the watch is wet especially under the bezel, it turns super smoooooothly, makes sense since it's a diver watch even though it's not ISO rated. I've only ever owned 2 dive watches, my Ray 2 and a Mido Ocean Star, the Mido was beautiful and a better watch all around on paper, however it's gone and the Ray 2 is still around.

Great video and very comprehensive overview. With the SKX out of production officially and climbing to crazy prices, this is definitely now the king of the budget diver segment (I see anywhewre from $115-$140). I've owned this watch for over year, no problems with the crystal and a solid performer. I upgraded the strap to a 316L stainless steel oyster style strap with solid end links, and it's just great - people definitely think it's a serious watch. I recently thought about selling it, but frankly there are few things that would really be an upgrade unless you want to go up to an Oris Aquis or Longines Hydroconquest.

Interesting comments about the spring bars. I own an Orient Excursionist GMT, which is a heavy weighted watch with a similar band. I’ve replaced the spring bars several times because they bend and break. I think it has to do with the combination of the thin spring bars, heavy watch, and most of the stress is placed near the center of the bars due to the watch band design.

The initial accuracy was plus 12 seconds per day but over the months of wearing it, it now is minus 2 seconds per day for the last month. So, I think it has settled in. One of the reasons I bought it was the AWESOME lume. It is readable 8 plus hours, so when I'm in bed, I always know what time it is. For me, that's a very important thing to know.

I have two of these they are very very nice. It is certainly worth twice the price. The Orient Kamasu with the sapphire crystal that version would almost be a $1000 watch with a bigger crown a ceramic insert and easier to turn true coin edge bezel. You are also correct about the Invicta 40mm prodivers what a great beater automatic dive watch for under $100. I have more Orient watchs than any other brand in my collection but it is a love hate relationship they are all almost perfect if they would only listen to reviewers and customers and make the small needed improvements.

The Neptune is a stunning watch for the price it's in the 400 to 500 CAD range but it's powered by the caliber 40N5A, the same movement used in Orient's Gen 2 Pro Saturation Diver priced over 1000 USD. A very comprehensive look at the ray 1st time iv'e seen your channel, no spring bar probs the issues iv'e had were on delivery gaining +25 daily ,the crown & stem failed within months (decoupled) & the occasional bezel jam, being the Kamasu no crystal issues. Since regulation its my most accurate auto running well within cocs parameters as or the crown/stem thing Orient parts are a nightmare to acquire ..the logical move would be to ditch the crown guards & larger crown, all that said its stilll one of my fave's.

Finally, now I know why they call it the Ray. Cool. I love my orange Ray II. Agree on all the negs, but my bezel has loosened up after 2 yrs of near daily use. I've been regulating mine of late, as after =/+ 10 sec since I first got it, it's now running quite fast. Finally getting past my fear of opening her up. I'm doing it by feel, so it's a great learning experience going through the process, especially since it's a fairly inexpensive entry level auto. In truth, I love it more than my $1,200 Marathon. Cheers

I just discovered your channel, nice work! I have a blue Mako II with an upgrade sapphire crystal and Strapcode bracelet, and love it (despite the "12" looking a bit off centre). It reminds me of a Longines Hydroconquest, for significantly less of course. I also received a nice blue Kamasu today, and was prepared to sell my Mako II, but might hold onto it a bit longer (especially after learning the Kamasu's lugs are shorter and my Strapcode won't fit). Anyway, both are lovely. I'm going to try the Kamasu on blue Barton silicone and brown leather straps I have on order, and might forgo the Strapcode for this one and keep the Mako II. The Ray is a nice piece too, and your video helped me appreciate it more. Being that I already have an SKX009 (totally modded), a stock SKX173 (my fave), an SKX031 (Seiko Sub), an SKX013, a 7002 diver, and others, I should probably control the urge for the Ray. Nice background, by the way. Are you on the West Coast? Looks a lot my city of Vancouver. All the best and thanks for your well thought out and nicely delivered videos.

I enjoy all your videos. One feature I hear popping up very often though is the screw down crown as the mark of a 200m or more dive watch. As a retired oceanographer who has spent decades designing, fabricating and deploying deep subsea equipment, I can inform everyone that the main functional purpose of a screw down crown is to prevent the crown from being pulled out inadvertently while under water. Even then, if a crown is pulled out under water and the captive O-ring stem seal is designed properly, it will still provide a 100% reliable seal. A properly designed and implemented O-ring seal will become more and more water resistant as hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure increases up to the point where the O-ring ruptures. I pity the diver at a dept where that occurs as they will most likely be dead. Helium pressure equalization will most likely become more of a factor than O-ring integrity at depths where O-rings may fail. Even dive tanks and regulators rely on a simple O-ring.

I have the RayII Raven. Although I didn't have a problem with the bezel, I didn't like the way it looked. I replaced the Bezel with a pvd coated (satin black), the bezel insert with a flat ceramic stealth insert, and a dd Sapphire with blue ar crystal. I'm very happy with this watch and my only 2 complaints, finding another pvd coated bracelet with solid end links and the crown.

Thanks for the review on the Orient Ray II. I purchased one and have had it about two months now and love it. I have been keeping an eye on the crystal based on your review. So far no scratches and I wear it almost daily. I had the Invicta Pro Diver, which is a great watch given the price point, and decided to pass that one on to my grandson as his first diver and kept the Orient. Yes, I like it that much more. The movement has been running about 5 seconds a day fast, which is very impressive for a watch at that price point. The Invicta was running about 10 seconds a day fast. The Orient is a far better watch than the Invicta but for about $60 more in cost I guess that stands to reason.

@@WondersofWatchdom I wanted to give you an update now that I am into the 6th month of owning the Orient Ray II watch. So far no scratches in the crystal, which is an absolute miracle for me as I tend to be rough on crystals. However, I have changed my habits on watch wearing to help preserve the crystal since I spent about $300 on watch crystal replacements and services for the other watches in my collection. Yes, I tend to be a little picky. I just received today the Orient Kamasu with the sapphire crystal. I also ordered it in blue based on your review of the Ray II since the Kamasu offered the same blue dial and bezel. It is an absolutely beautiful watch. I don't know how I missed it but as far as the spring bar comments you made. As far as I am concerned I am in agreement with you, with no issues with them, and these Orient watches are the easiest watches I have had in adjusting the bracelets to my size. I also agree that if people are bending them they are doing something totally wrong.
My grandson has been taking excellent care of his Invicta Pro Diver, I did polish some scratches out on the crystal for him while he was out visiting for the holidays, and none were too over the top and were normal for a watch being worn every day. His birthday is in July and I am going to order him the Kamasu from Orient, the trick will be to find out what color he would prefer without giving away what his birthday present will be. LOL I really appreciate your reviews. I am curious to know and will search your videos to find out, but have you done a review on the Kamasu from Orient?

I think you may have just gotten one with a less than spec crystal. I have the exact same model and have no issues with mine. You can get a sapphire replacement for about $35 if you chose to do so. After mine broke in; it runs about +5 to +9 seconds per day. WAY better than my SKX.

This is an amazing watch. I absolutely love mine also in blue. It's on my daily rotation with my Citizen NY0040 and my Seiko SKX009J. All on rubber straps as I work in an industrial environment. My PPE seems to scratch up bracelets. Although all three have mineral crystal, the Ray II has a few scratches on it. It's also the dress-iest of the three so it has character. I may mod it with a sapphire crystal.

I own the Ray Ii Raven. Pretty watch. This isn't a $1k watch however - pressed clasp, hollow end links, mineral crystal. Nope. And I agree 100% on the crown. I wind it every night - so I can grab and go if I want, and it's not fun. And my crystal is a little scratched as well.
The most fun part of the Raven is the black face and the black second hand with the red tip. It looks like the red tip is floating all by itself as it circles the dial.
I'd say this watch is priced about right.
This watch is beat up all over by my similarly priced Chinese Special Cronos No Time To Die diver - sapphire crystal, great bezel action with ceramic insert, wonderful silky crown action, lovely milled clasps and solid end links. Ok, maybe the logo on the Orient is better as well... you got me there.
Now that's a watch punching above it's weight.
The in-house movement on the Orient is probably it's biggest draw, although the NH35 ain't no slouch.

Love the video. I'm a big Orient fan and I like the fair examination of this watch. One thing I hear a lot is why wouldn't you get a micro brand homage for the same price, with supposedly better specs, and I guess that all comees down to history and what you're willing to do. I did had issues with the springbars, the watch just fell off my hand two times. I admit one time was when I was throwing a guy out of a bar :)) I have 2 Ray’s and 2 Mako’s. I fitted slightly stronger sprinbars witch could be barely fit because the bracelet hole is very narrow. I rarely use the bracelets at this time, and I do have one Strapcode which is awesome. The crystal is very, very scratch prone, but I quickly replaced them with sapphire for all of them. Btw your videos are great, never missed any of them, hope you’d do more in the future.

The stiff bezel is caused by the gasket they use which comes unlubricated from the factory. Applying a thin coat of silicone grease makes the bezel action delightful.
