I'm the son of an old tree mechanic who now holds 5 patents in mechanical shielding against EMP's. So, I know a good mechanic and professor when I see one. By far your videos are the best I have seen on transmission repair and rebuild. And that includes the shiny corporate speakers. I love it when you flip the book and do it your way. Because you know firsthand the book causes you to get codes. Great Job. Hope it's been lucrative, and you spend it having a good life.

Started watching your videos after I had issues on my B3000 transmission. My nephew said "I know if we tore this thing down on the bench we could rebuild it ourselves in a couple hours". I showed him one of your vids and he said "ok, maybe not". I don't think most people understand how complicated a transmission is.

Can’t thank you enough for sharing this invaluable information for the world to see! I lost all gear on my Ranger 4r44e trans. Called all Shops in town and 1500 is the best deal I got if I remove and install unit from/to vehicle myself. I’m not financially stable enough to jump at that kind of a deal, so iv decided to put on the hat and do it myself with the help of people like yourself. So far I have laid every down like this, just need to clean them
Up and the rebuild following your steps. I have found three signs which I’m convinced are the culprits to my loss of all gears: Small break on valve body gasket, burnt color/worn frictions and steels, and finally the sprag is spinning both clockwise and counter-clockwise…..Ordering parts tomorrow and start cleaning process while awaiting parts. Never done this before but I’m handy and curious enough lol. Will take my time with it.

@@cantgetright7236 I guess it depends who you’re asking 🤣 It’s a lot for me especially since iv been spending on a bunch of projects. And this is my second vehicle so need not as urgent. I received my overhaul rebuild kit, put the whole thing together on the table, took it apart, and put it all together once again just to be extra thorough. I was following instructions from this guy and other credible sources. I was sure to have reassembled it perfectly. Spray painted the pan, threw it all back under the truck and bam! Shifting and riding like new. I’m thrilled because I lost all gears, and this is my biggest job so far on a vehicle. Prior to this I would change oil, break pads, fluids, and that’s about it…lol…so yeah, with a little bit of tools, patience, and willingness I believe anyone can do it.

To drop the gear assembly to where the gear goes smoothly into the planet gear, use a thin tie down strap. Stand the trans and lower the heavy gear assembly with the thin strap holding it at the bottom while lowering it in. It will drop in, and the strap will slide out.

Of those three models of transmissions, 5R55N, W and S, what are the differences, valve bodies?
I've heard the solenoid packs on those are problematic right from the factory as are other issues. Does the SK55 Transgo improvement kit solve solenoid issues as well?
We have one of these (N Lincoln LS8) that during full throttle the 2 to 3 shift occurs yet torque converter locks up before it shifts into 4th. Otherwise it seems to be healthy but for its seems slightly noisey from the day it was new.
Great assembly Hiram. Second question, once all the planets and drums are installed into the case, is there an overall tolerance that should be measured for end play and adjusted with selectable washers and/or 3 tab washers etc.?

I never worry about what's stamped on the servo cover. Big piston goes in front ( o.d.), smaller is intermediate on 4 sps.
    If it's a 5 sp.,The intermediate band is 3rd gear.

    • @AutomaticTransmission
      @AutomaticTransmission  2 ปีที่แล้ว

You're right, even on the 4 cylinder A4LD's with the tiny intermediate servo, always goes to the back. Also the stiffer spring goes to the back.
Great comment and addition to the narrative.

Could you give me your thoughts on it, I still have that trans and would love to figure out what is causing it.

I also have (own), a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT with a 4R44E transmission.
I purchased this Ranger because the mechanic at the local dealership told me the engine had a rod knock, and I needed parts for my explorer (I fixed up the Ranger and never did use it for parts).
After I checked it out, I found that the flex plate had sheared itself off the crankshaft bolts and destroyed itself as well as the spacer between the crankshaft and the flex plate
I replaced both the flex plate, and the crankshaft spacer.
After 6 months I heard a slight knocking sound. So, I replaced the timing chain and gear set. This did not cure the knocking sound. So, I did some further checking, and found that once again the Flex plate was shearing itself off the crankshaft bolts.
I think I know why the replaced flex plate was destroying itself. On the factory installed flex plates there is a (flex plate /flywheel reinforcement plate), welded to the flex plate. The aftermarket ones you purchase from the local auto parts supply stores do not have this flex plate /flywheel reinforcement plate), welded to them. Neither the local Ford Dealer nor any of the auto parts stores can tell me why?
    NOTE One: -
I determined that without that flex plate /flywheel reinforcement plate), it allows the crankshaft /flex plate retaining bolts to bottom out inside the crankshaft holes, thereby allowing the flex plate to move back and forth sideways (not forward and backward), because the bolts are not completely snugging the flex plate up to the crankshaft even though they are still remaining torqued at 50 ft lbs. torque as specified in the manual.
    NOTE Two: -
I discovered that You cannot find either that Flex Plate / Flywheel reinforcement plate, itself, the Flex plate to crankshaft mounting bolts, the crankshaft to flex plate spacer, or a complete with Flex plate /flywheel reinforcement plate), welded to it either at the Auto parts stores or on-line as both the auto parts stores, as well as the Ford dealers, all tell me those items are no longer available.
The problem and issue I have is......?
    Question One -
Why did the original flex plate destroy itself when the original owner had it (I have never met the original owner, as he lives in another state and was only passing through my area to another state when he broke down and sold the vehicle to a mechanic at the Ford dealership). Neither the local Ford Dealer nor any of the auto parts stores can tell me why?
    Note Three: -
During research (yes, even on TH-cam Video's), I have noticed that several people have had this same problem of having to replace the flex plate on their own Ford Rangers several times because of this same problem of the Flex plate destroying itself each time after replacement.
    Again.... The question remains........ Why?
    Question Two: -
Why did the original flex plate destroy itself, and why do the replacement flex plates keep destroying themselves?
    NOTE Four: -
I think possibly the replacement flex plates are destroying themselves because of the problem that the aftermarket replacement flex plates do not have that Flex plate /flywheel reinforcement plate), welded to them of which allows the bolts to bottom out thereby allowing the flex plate to still be loose and move back and forth (sideways), even though the bolts remain properly torqued.
    But, Six questions remain.....?
Question One - Why did the original flex plate destroy itself in the first place?
Question Two - What is causing this problem?
Question Three - What is the cure for this?
Question Four - Is there something wrong with the transmission and its components, or is it something doing with the overall drive train and/or the power train assembly together?
Question Five - Dose the Transmission have to be replaced to cure the problem?
Question Six - Why doesn't any of the Ford Dealerships or the aftermarket auto parts stores have an answer?
Do you yourself (or anybody out there for that matter), have the correct answer to curing this "Flex Plate Self-Destruction" problem?
As it seems that nobody else either locally (or on TH-cam), can answer those questions for me.
It seems that I have ran into a brick wall when it comes to both my Ford Explorer''s, as well as my Ford Ranger's problems. (See previous post pertaining to my Ford Explorer's problems).

I have a 1994 Explorer LTD with a 4R44E transmission. This is a replacement transmission from a salvage yard.
When I installed the transmission into the Explorer (and before I attempted the first start-up), I replaced both the filter, and the ATF fluid.
This replacement transmission lasted about 45 days before it started having problems.
First problem. - After 45 days it got to where it wouldn't automatically upshift in the lower gears unless it had either sat and idled for about 20 minutes, (You had to manually upshift it by using the gearshift lever). After it warmed up (or got to normal operating temperature), after about 5 to 10 miles everything would function as normal in the automatic mode.
But if you shut it off and went into a store and then restarted it up and went to drive it again, you always have to let it idle again (for at least 2 minutes), or it would not upshift properly again except manually.
Then after doing this for about 2 months, it suddenly developed a second problem.
Second problem. - I drove it home one day everything functioned normally. The following day, I started it up, let it idle for about ten minutes. I then placed it into reverse and all hell broke loose. As soon as I placed it into reverse, all I could hear was the sound of grinding gears, and it would not move. So, I placed it into drive, and everything was normal, and it would move forward in all forward gears.
But, every time I again attempted to place it into reverse, all it would do was grind gears again.
Any idea what went wrong or what happened?

What’s the difference between 5r55e and a 5r44e? And can the computer tell a difference?

    • @AutomaticTransmission
      @AutomaticTransmission  ปีที่แล้ว

5R44E has 4 pinion planets and 5R55E has 6 pinion planets.
As long they're both 5R's with output speed sensor they're interchangeable.

I’ve looked everywhere and can’t seem to figure out why my input shaft won’t come out. Anyone on here know why?

@@AutomaticTransmission Ok, I don't see anything like that so I opened up TH-cam on the pc & I saw your number that you rarely check so I sent a text to you

    • @AutomaticTransmission

It'll be easier through email. Calls and texts that are not on my contacts get deleted. I'll check and see if still there but more than likely it was deleted. Multiple calls with no messages get blocked.
