    Hi Alan........cracking views right from the start, great footage of that Helicopter rescue. Quite right Alan, never split up you will no doubt have worried for hours after that decision......all's well that ends well. (I did that with Wendy on the Coledale horseshoe and I had to take a detour to meet back up with her which put on hour on my estimated time to meet up with her, by the time I got there she had been crying, she thought i'd fallen as a helicopter had been called out in the area where I was, so I can sympathise with you on that score)....I love it when the mist/cloud rolls in its so atmospheric, well done mate you are looking good for 66...........what a cracking day Alan, really enjoyed it........ATB.....Stu/Wendy.....👍👌😊

Thank you, Alan! I enjoyed hearing the stories of your previous visits to the summit with your boys and then the bad weather encountered with you & your wife. I’m glad you had a good outing on this day ☀️. I’ll have to read more about the hike up, as I’m wondering who laid the stones and pathway originally. Wow what a spectacular place. Stunning! I know what you mean about pushing on and not taking breaks. There are times where one must keep moving to ensure success. I’d call that a success despite the little bit of cloud whipping by the summit. Outstanding views at the top but really all along the trail. Glad that snap decision on a prior trip worked out ok. Kids are often tougher and more skilled than we give them credit for, but as a parent we’re worried about them on their own. It was no doubt a good experience for them. Oh and I love the Scottish accent!

    Ben Nevis, well i had to do this, although to be honest we would be more than happy watching you 24/7 on the big telly. Ah what a lovely start and great memories of all the previous times you have climbed it and camped nearby. I have to say the footage you are grabbing is stunning, better than i have ever seen it with my own eyes, those cloud formations and adjacent fells? 😱 wow, awesome heli rescue, practically every time we climb Helvellyn i could grab the same footage, always some rookie getting the fear of god into them on one of the scrambles needing rescuing. I can’t believe we have just had this convo, how quick the weather can change and you were with Mrs Metalman to boot! You made the right decision Alan, easy path down from there your boys! Never seen that waterfall so dry! Oh your on the zig zags! Hate that bit, little progress or all that effort! Those views, so we have already talked about my best time on Ben but this rivals that, wow. Love the snow views on your previous visit! well done Mr and Mrs Metalman, great achievement! Lovely music choices fitting that incredible summit. Insane views on the way down! Ha ha, love winding people up on the way up, your almost there, not much further! 🤣 wee numpties! 🤣🤣 wrong number? Priceless! This was epic, clearly your videos have been on point for so long. LEGEND ♥️

      This was filmed with my Hero 7 and last September, really had a good day, despite getting off to a bad start and misty summit. It was mid week but could not believe how many people were on the summit and on the way up, om my previous visits lucky to see a handful making it to the top. The time I went up with Mrs Metalman was a real slog, it started off great but pulled in a third of the way and started raining, but as I had done it with our two lads the previous year (in glorious weather), she was determined to make it, which she did but I would have happily binned it with the lads. I love it when I am coming off a summit and meeting people blowing hard on the way up and saying "keep going, you are almost half way to the top", I said that to one women and she nearly fainted lol! Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

      @@AlanMETALMAN Definitely the same sense of humour Alan. Some days we go out just to say completely random comments to passers by, the more random the better! “The May hares are a leaping!” To be beaten with “The grouse is a growling today!”, that is on flat walks for our own amusement. But on a descent like Ben Nevis, telling ascenders near the summit they are “Almost half way up!” Is the best comment ever! 🤣

    Great hike, Alan. I enjoyed the memories of previous hikes, and even some previous footage and photos. The helicopter rescue was wild. It is inevitable to make a few bad decisions in life while hiking; I can remember a few, too, that are hard to think about. Sure were some amazing views on the way, both up and down. Very well done for getting up to the summit 4 times😊👌 we climbed Ben Nevis for the first time last September, and we were so lucky to get wonderful views too, although it looked amazing in the snow! Perhaps that will be next on the list. We are sat watching your video from our holiday lodge in benderloch just outside of oban, although it looks like we just missed you!😫. And also that you got the best of the weather while you were here! It's been quite wet and cloudy, but still a stunning place to visit, and we did manage a dry wild Camp which was amazing! Hey Alan, you have been included in our tv line up again tonight as we watch you doing Ben Nevis on the big screen! Let’s face it you are by far more enjoyable to watch and much more entertaining than some of the rubbish currently on tv!
    We have done this a few times and we too like your self have very fond memories each time! Will never forget the time we went for my birthday at the end of September early October way back and Nick had his shorts on (to be fair he wears shorts practically all year round, he has very hardy legs lol although this year has started to feel the cold 🤭👴👵) but every single person we passed had something to say about him wearing shorts 😂🤭😂🤣
    Oh my days you have helicopter footage of a rescue for a twisted ankle, cool! Well…..not so much for the victim 😳😬
    O oh sorry to hear Mrs Metalman’s experience with the weather change wasn’t very enjoyable, phew glad your son’s were ok but the fact you and Mrs Metalman worried all the way up then down, what a relieve seeing them in the caravan! Ooo the snowy time looked lovely! Is that the same time as the boys went back down and Mrs Metalman was with you or a different time still?
    That zig zag path is oh so memorable when it comes to sir Ben Nevis 😂🤭👏 gggrrrr!
    Views this time 😍😍😍😍 that shale that you relate to the moon is a bloody nightmare on the descent!
    It was busy too, great shots and stills!
    ‘A wee swelly you wee numpties’ bloody brilliant 🤩 hilarious he thought he’d got the wrong number! ‘Ock eye the noo Alan, you have a wee canny Scor-Tish accent’ 😂🤣
    This was our best viewing by far of the evening! You are brilliant! Much love ❤️👏😘

First time I have done it solo and funny how the memories of previous visits came flooding back over me on the way up, most good but a couple of sketchy ones too. The helicopter footage was from 7 years ago when I led a party of about 10 friends to the top celebrating my 60th birthday, they surprised me with a bottle of champagne and a bottle of malt whisky at the summit, which we foolishly drank. It took us longer to get down than it did to get up LOL! Take care, cheers Alan

    Holy cow Alan, these hikes are getting to be serious business! You totally lucked out on the weather on this one. Didn't get baked with sun, views for days. Thanks for the story on the lads taking shortcuts and breaking their legs. Lucky that you guys can get helicopters in there for rescues. The wind speeds we have in our mountains, if one man goes down, it takes 18 to carry him out, and if they have to get him someplace where a helicopter can extract him, they often have to call in the army with a Blackhawk helicopter because of the typical weather conditions. Every year, dozens of people get hurt doing things they shouldn't on trail, and pay for it. Literally, as preventable rescue here gets you saddled with the full bill, which can be $20,000+
    Lots of differences between your mountains and ours, but once you got above the vegetation line, Ben Nevis isn't much different from Mt Washington. Just as crowded too. Surface of the moon indeed. Can you imagine how big Ben Nevis must have been a few ice ages ago? Tops of mountain covered in rock like that were usually MUCH taller before a couple hundred million years of glaciers ground them down.
    Loved the Scottish accent story. Lol. I work on mine all the time. Lay on ye great haggis face! Excellent hike Alan, fantastic!

    • @AlanMETALMAN
      @AlanMETALMAN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, thanks for the great comment and taking the time to watch, really appreciate it. The mountain rescue service is all voluntary in the UK and totally reliant of donations but if you need them it is a free service and most of them have full time jobs too, so drop everything when there is a call out. Pleased you got my Scottish accent, more than my mate did, he thought he had a wrong number lol! Take care, cheers Alan

    • @northeastfamilyadventures9186
      @northeastfamilyadventures9186 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlanMETALMAN New Hampshire Fish and Game has something called Hikesafe. Can pay $35 for the entire family for a year, and they won't charge you for rescue as long as it wasn't easily preventable. Understand, the majority of these rescues are idiots in flip flops, or folk that go in completely unprepared for climbing a mountain (no water, inappropriate gear, didn't bring a map or check weather) We tend to frown heavily on putting S&R teams in danger to haul someone out because they were stupid. It also takes resources off the table if someone has a real accident, like getting caught in a rock slide.

      Good on you for doing the WHW, I will have to check that our when you do it and I hope you get to do Ben Nevis, if you get the conditions, the views are amazing. Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment, real good of you and very much appreciated, cheers Alan

    Well done, Alan, you did it again! Class commentary and stories about previous experiences loved the Scottish accent but you need a kilt to be authentic!! Maybe you should try an Irish accent next, to be sure. Pity about the cloud at the top but you got spectacular views on the way up and down and it looked busy. Scottish roads are a bit like the lake district, narrow and windy. But rest up now, more adventures to come. Andrea sends best wishes, regards Ashley

      Thanks to you both for watching and although I was dissaponted with the mist coming down (again), just before the summit, I was real happy with the views I got. I have just spent £200 on Rode Go wirekess system and new mic as I was dissaponted with the sound quality on this hike and more so on the Coniston hike, so hopefully that will sort out any further audio issues. Cheers Alan

    Looks like the mountain fitness is back then Alan😊 . That Scottish accent - Wow! Must be some Scottish blood in the Skinner family. You’d look good in a Skinner tartan bandana if there was one 😊 cheers atb

      One quarter Scottish blood Stuart, which is why I always find the sound of the pipes so stirring I guess. Do a lot of prep hiking in the Lakes for a couple of weeks beforehand and it really paid off, I felt great the next day, which was a big but very pleasant surprise lol. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

    Brilliant Alan, you've certainly had your mixed bag of experiences on Ben Nevis. We've all made the wrong decisions at times. Great clip of the helicopter. That must have been before the GoPro days?
    Your Scottish accent was shocking. 😂

    • @AlanMETALMAN
      @AlanMETALMAN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dam, I was real happy with that accent, I thought it was spot on lol. Yeah the helicopter clip was from over 6 years ago, when I took a party up for my 60th birthday and they surprised me with a bottle of Champaign and a single malt whisky. We spent over an hour at the top and drank the lot, another bad decision, it was almost dark by the time we got down lol!! Thanks very much for watching Robin, appreciate it buddy, cheers Alan

    66? FFS lol, you're wearing it well Alan. I've never done it..... oh god I've wanted to, and it's been on my list for a long time, but my life kinda got side-tracked by my mad cliff diving sons. I have no regrets though. Maybe one day in the near future.....

      It will always be there Lee, just getting busier, I had to Q for almost 30 minutes to get to the kern to get a photo! I went mid week at 07.30 and could not believe the amount going up - still worth it mind. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

    Great hike Alan. It is awesome to see the views all the way up. Just curious if those mid elevation lakes are filled with snow melt or spring fed? People are just asking for trouble when they cut corners on the trail switchbacks. Cool air med footage. I liked how you incorporated the historical pictures with your current trip. Glad you all found each other after getting separated on your previous trip. Well done on your video. Have a great day.

      They are all Lochs and there year round. Despite and unexpected long drive and late start, I really enjoyed the day and a first time doing this solo. Funny how memories of the 3 previous assets came flooding over me all day, I said it was my final time but who knows, my daughter wants to climb it now lol. Thanks very much for stopping by, cheers Alan

    What an awesome hike brother! And great stories! Those guys were lucky they didn’t get killed! Sometimes a shortcut is so not a good idea! I hear ya about sending your boys down alone, that had to be nerve wracking! OK I have to ask, what do you do if you have to “go”? I know driving a lot of water and listening to a waterfall would make me have to “go”! 😂😂😂 Thanks for sharing brother, I enjoyed watching and hearing the back stories!

      Haha, yes I had to go too but managed to find a quiet spot, which was difficult, as there were so many people going up and down, even mid week. Safety is always the best option on this hike, on a nice day fine but it can change real quick up there. Thank you so much for stopping by, cheers Alan

      Thank you so much for watching Marc and your very kind words, which I appreciate. I think I always say that is my last time as, at 66, I try and fool myself that is will be but it never will be lol! To be honest, I felt much better after this one the next day, than I have the previous 3 times I have been up there but I did do a lot of preparation hikes in the lakes 2 weeks before we went up to Scotland. Take care buddy, cheers Alan

    There is no bad footage to be had on this hike, I am sure of it. Is that a shelter up there next to the summit marker/cairn? So happy for you that you had great weather Alan. Curious what is the elevation gain on that hike is. Its bound to be a lot with being the hights point in the UK. Stunning footage and vlog, but all of your videos are always superb! ~RVA~

      It's 1345m (4412 feet), starting at sea level too, so no sneaking up in the car lol. Yes there is a shelter at the top next to the summit marker and the previous time I was up there the top third of the mountain was covered in snow with the only the summit marker and top of the shelter above the snow line. Thank you very much for watching, take care and watch out for those bears, cheers Alan

    Nice Video Alan, shame you had the clag at the top but it looked a lovely day. All these tops are so crowded now aren't they ? I think I am going to have to consider going to more obscure fells for some tranquillity, might not be popular with the viewing public but at least I can stop and eat my packed lunch without someone else's dog trying to eat it 😂

      Yes and when you consider this was a Monday and not a weekend, I could not believe how many people were there, even though I started at about 07.30 as well.
