  • Paul and Fr. Nate discuss how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours with no fancy liturgy books, pray through Mid-Afternoon Prayer to show you how it's done, and also give a few life updates.
    Bonus Content: Bubble Water Sounds
    00:00 Introduction and Sparkling Water
00:43 What do you do if you have no fancy liturgical books.
01:20 Paul's Life Updates: Baby Rose has been Baptized! (see 01:53 for pic)
02:11 Fr. Nate's Life Updates - He's now the undergraduate chaplain at Harvard Catholic Center!
02:45 Did Fr. Nate use a boat to cross the river when he took his new assignment?
03:35 How to send mail to Sing the Hours and other random items.
04:36 How can you start praying the Liturgy of the Hours if you have no books?
    - divineoffice.org/ - ibreviary.com/ - universalis.com
05:53 Now what can we do to sing it?
06:19 Step One: Know a few basic hymn tunes.
06:49 The "8.8.8" at the bottom means "long meter." There are several you can learn.
08:17 The difference between "long meter" and "common meter."
    09:08 An example of 8.8.8.8
09:57 8.8.8.8. means eight syllables, not notes.
    10:14 The Recto Tono option.
    10:57 The Monastic Reciting Tone
12:30 The Psalms using just one tone to get started.
12:55 Let's pray an office together using what we just learned.
    Mid-Afternoon Prayer
12:57 Oh God, come to my assistance.
13:18 Hymn (8.8.8.8 long meter): "Iam surgit hora tertia," Saint Ambrose, 340-397, Translation © 2023 ICEL
    14:15 Psalm 119v25-32 (Tone 8)
    15:18 Psalm 26 (Tone 8)
    16:42 Psalm 28v1-3, 6-9 (Tone 8)
    18:11 Reading: Acts 5v41-42
    18:33 Responsory
    18:51 Concluding Prayers
Debrief On What We Just Did
    18:24 Let's break it down a little
    18:34 But first 3 announcements:
    1. 18:37 Come to our retreat!! lothretreat.my.canva.site/
    2. 19:51 Tune in to our Pentecost Vigil! Or come out to Our Lady of Good Voyage in Boston.
    3. 20:15 Boston LotH Retreat - TBD 2024
    20:37 Back to the debrief
20:44 If you're with a priest or deacon, they should lead in the prayer.
20:45 Generally you should stand up if praying in a group.
21:16 The antiphon for the Psalmody for daytime prayer (especially in Eastertide) is "Alleluia."
21:40 We did this all in Tone 8. There are no antiphons in the middle of daytime prayer.
21:50 We skipped the Psalm prayers because they're not actually part of the official text.
22:15 We usually do the "Gloria" in Latin.
22:32 The "Responsory" tune we use is the same one we use all throughout the Easter season.
22:48 The priest should always do the concluding prayer. And hold the phone for them!
23:07 Acclamation is going to be updated.
23:27 Wrap Up! We did a chant and a rant!
    23:40 A Ceremonial Cheers
23:44 Stop by St. Paul's and say hello to Fr. Nate!
    24:07 The sound of refreshment.

Congratulations! The gift of life in Christ, and "the new assignment"! I love the "sing the hours", and passed on awareness of this beautiful production to our chapter of the OFS I aspire to join. What a beautiful way to celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours. Thank you, both!

This was great! Especially the education about metrical tunes! In the future i hope you expand on this topic of metrical hymns, like your favorites each season, and the tunes you recommend
Im having this difficulty with the Latin hymns i want to sing with traditional divine office; a long tune works for a text but it's too cheerful 😅 and doesn't fit the meaning, so id like to gather flexible tunes

More of this please! Thank you - very helpful. I've tried singing the hours using the Breviary app - but failed. I'll try again. One question please - why is there a cross printed, in certain places, next to the text?

    • @SingtheHours
      @SingtheHours หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's not a cross, it's a "dagger," † it means to follow a different intonation, notice how when we sing the psalms I put the "pointings" up on the top right of the screen. Notice there is a corresponding dagger and star in the notes. If there is a triplet of lines then you do the "flex" pointings, going down two notes in this case, before returning to the usual tone.

Thank you, that makes sense. I'll use the marks when I next chant.

You put too much emphasis on chanting and singing. While the GILH highly encourages singing and chanting, it isn't necessary. You make me feel like my prayer is suboptimal because you never say that recitation is okay. I recite the LotH because I am not musically inclined. Attempting to sing and chant detracts from my prayer because I'm emphasizing the wrong thing. You should make it clear that pure recitation is acceptable to the Lord our God.

      @dadrifter0912 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

I think the point he’s getting at that it is something to try and you don’t need much to get started. He even gives those recto tono and reciting tones just to try to demonstrate that you don’t have to have a good singing voice to sing the hours. Yes, of course you can recite it.

    • @dubarnik
      @dubarnik หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dadrifter0912 He needs to say that singing, chanting, recto tono is all unnecessary. The LotH can be prayed without any music whatsoever. Chanting/Singing is encouraged and not required. Otherwise, he is excluding people like me who like all music ability and want to focus on prayer rather than attempting so sing.

@@dubarnik What good does the validation of one youtuber have upon an youtube commenter’s preference? The General Instruction for the Liturgy of the Hours already permits it.
