Great instruction. Three main items for a good cast: Elbow down, entire cast continuous, pull in w/lower hand. That makes it relatively simple. Line set up and weight is important, but you can use this cast even with a wt. forward floating line. A very energy efficient, relaxed motion, especially if you have a disability such as a shoulder injury or arthritis. It is not easy to teach this cast on grass, but not impossible.

This video reminds me how far fishing has evolved in my lifetime. When I was a kid, I learned to fish in a pond, with a single piece bamboo rod, void of cork, eyes, and reel, with a heavy fishing line tied to the end, sporting a bobber the size of a softball, and a number 12 hook impaling the night crawler that happened to draw the short straw. I'd never even heard terms like weighted stinger fly, Spey-cast, D-loop, light-anchor, Skagit-head, traction, gentle peel, sink-tip, super-acceleration, Maxima ultragreen strait mono leader, etc., etc., and the word "shooting" was reserved for a completely different sport, altogether. On occasion, we did use the word "dangle", but I think it meant something totally different. You should do a video on the progression of fishing techniques over your life. I, for one, would find that interesting. On a different note, by the looks of the first minute or two of the video, I'm wondering if your buddy recently performed the kind of cast that results in either hooking the biggest fish he's ever seen, or, hooking himself, usually in the upper thigh area, sometimes referred to as the infamous "shart" cast. :)

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins Haha... wasn't throwing rocks or insinuating your terminology was overbearing, rather, I just find it interesting how sophisticated fishing has become over the years. Keep pounding out the great videos. You're a great asset to the fly fishing community!

Love this raw one Tim, you really are helping the Spey community out there. At 6:55 would be a good moment to mention the 180 , nothing wrong brother that you forgot about the 180, but we should mention the 180 even if this tutorial is about the D-loop, a proper anchor is only a piece not the key element for the system to work, I believe the essentials for the system to work on any roll/spey cast are 3, 1-anchor, 2-D-Loop and 3- 180. If we lack on one of them, the results will be unfriendly to the caster. Keep up the good work guys!
    Thank you

A repeat to appeal to all of the Jedi's many fans...
Just a heads up...I am trying to solicit funds for the Jedi to purchase a remote microphone to aid in his video lessons that we all benefit from. I am going to seed it with $50 and would welcome any and all to step up and help in this matter, be it financial or advisory. I have found Tim's lessons to be top-notch and always delivered in a warm, friendly tone that encourages even the most inept casters, like myself. Let's help him, help us, with a remote microphone setup so we can hear his lessons, and his lighthearted candid self abasements, when the wind blows or he turns his back to the camera. The quality lessons and friendship he freely gives is surely worthy of our coin.
I plan on asking Tim to pin this one on top. If you find it crass or otherwise objectionable, blame me.

Line Speed Jedi Hi Tim! I’m well and thank you for asking. Season should kick off in just a few weeks. Home & work are good, staying healthy. Fishing the Gaelforce lines still. Unbelievable they are. So impress me with their distance and finesse.
Read a good book you might enjoy called The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson. It’s about the biggest heist of bird feathers used for tying flies. Great read
How are you? Good winter? You look well and sound like you are in a good space. Stay healthy and safe on the water and keep the videos going!! Best wishes, JJ

    Tips here buddy !
If you going to spey cast a skagit line make the leader longer that make you can anchor leader harder and keep the belly of the skagit in the air ! This is how I cast so far whit my riggs 12' is good for snapp T cast but as you start spey you got make the leader longer I use mostly 15' but some day I'm use 20' to to anchor hard enough to really push and pull the cast. And its important that the rod loads enough and all people in the world cast different even whit same gear ! For my single hand 10' 8# rod I use 10-12' leader and weight of the skagit make choice of leader length! If to short or to light you blow your anchor! That's a big key most dont think about here. All goes around sweep and D loop. But you got to loading the rod as much as possible and that is ways of doing it but my point is focus on the leader more. Best regards from Sweden 🇸🇪👍Bjorn

Sure I try help out! I help lots of people at the banks at our rivers. And as I'm told before as more people fish as further out fish goes. Splash and hard ripping make lots of noise! And sound travel 60 times better in the water few think of this. Our salmon is spoked so a quiet cast increase the chance by many procent. Oh be fun see that video! The swed 🇸🇪

      Here some keys !
15' rod whit scandi line it should be tre time longer the rod. For skagit I think X2 times the rod works good. Shorter head tighter sweep but it push the anchor so watch up ! But it's good rule as I'm try out my self. Skagit is pretty new for me I got my first line in 2010. But work good on short rod like 11-13ft. Any one read this test and see the difference. trying to get the hang of casting with opposite hands , got the stroke down just can’t get any power ?? , set up is mirror image but no power in the cast , buddy said to work on it , but I’m getting tired of not getting any distance, any ideas ?

Dont worry about distance at this point. work on bending the rod between top and bottom hands and make tight loops. Here is a video that might be of some help. Watch this thoroughly and practice. Let me know how its going, Implement all of this and lt me know how it goes. video yourself if you want and send it to me. Another great video Tim i find casting a Scandi or even a full Spey line much easier than a Skagit line
I was told it was because i am 6'6" so that's why. Is there truth to that?

A lot of good tips. I'm new to the world of spey, only fished with single handed. Last week I had my second day of trying out my spey outfit, and I had this irritating fault; when i finally cast, the line goes out, but everything ends like spagetti in a bowl a few meters ahead of me. Any thoughts what's could be wrong with my cast?

Go easy and just cast the shooting head only to begin with and don't try to cast very far at all. I have a new video coming out that might help. Stay tuned!

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins no I haven't. As much as I want to try it I can just buy a switch/speys from them for cheaper than I can rig one up. I have wanted to try and do it to a bamboo rod to make a little trout spey. I have a 12'2" bamboo and echo glass 6124 I'm absolutely in love with I got for $140, and was swinging on the White River AR earlier this week. I'm trying to find a second so both my fiance and I have one but I can't find one under $200 anymore so I'm holding out till at least salmon season off the great lakes.

Great videos you make for us who are not naturally born Skagit masters. Can you give me your opinion on what weight Skagit line I should get for my Skandi designed 12´10 ft 31gr / 475 grain rod. The rod is quite stiff but loads well down when put to the test. I got a 520 grain Vision Ace Skagit head but it seems to me that it needs to be quite a bit heavier to load the rod properly when Skagit casting. Thanks and regards from Iceland.

    • @LineSpeedJediTimRawlins
      @LineSpeedJediTimRawlins  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you Einer! I think 520 should work. Remember the rod does not stay loaded througouth the sweep and forward cast but maninly loads on forward cast only. Keep trying your skagit line and make sure you have a 10 or 12' or t11 and weighted fly. the sink tip should help with loading. The more you cast the more you will get used to it and not require a super heavy head.
