    For the wood one: When you dent the wood, the mass you displace from the dent doesnt leave the block of wood, it just gets compressed. Since wood is porous and heat expands, the moisture fills all the pores and the heat causes them to rexpand, pushing the mass back into shape.

    the soap thing is more for metal when you are cutting it to make jewelry, you rub the jewelers saw along soap (or more commonly beeswax) then cut into the metal. Makes it much smoother and helps make cleaner cuts. Not ideal for wood, just metal.

    • @wolfchan4389
      @wolfchan4389 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I use it for cutting and drilling wood - soap and wax both make it a lot easier but they were putting wayyyy too much. I especially use it when I am building guitars with bolt on necks where the hardwood can get really tough even with pilot holes to screw into.

  • @Dreamest88
    @Dreamest88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    Side note, that soap trick works well with needles. I used to place pins into a bar of soap. That way it would go through the fabric easier when embroidery or pinning pieces together to sew together.

    I'm in training to be a cabinetmaker and I use the steam hack with any dents, though I do it differently. I put a wet paper towel on top of the wood and then run an iron (on low) over it until it's raised enough and then sand it smooth. I think it works because you're putting moisture into the wood, which makes it expand.
    Also with the soap hack, I've used that and it's really nice for soft metals like brass which are really easy to strip. I used paraffin wax though, which may have some slightly different results

    The earbud ad actually showed a pretty good use case. Though more for just a situation where you want wireless over wired. If you put a treadmill under your desk and want to have headphones on, wired headphones will zap you. Or rather you zap them? kinda ... Walking on a treadmill builds up static electricity in you. But you can't ground through the treadmill for various reasons. So with wired headphones, you'll get periodic zaps in your sensitive ears as they end up as the path of least resistance to your PC ... unless your PC somehow isn't grounded ... in which case I wish you luck.
    For those wondering, this didn't happen back when people used wired headphones for portable music players while walking because the music player isn't grounded. So the path of least resistance in both that case and in the case of using wireless headphones is usually through the air which happens equally across your whole body, or through your feet if you aren't wearing shoes with rubber soles.

    @InaZeaAnaZazi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    PSA: do not use the magnet hack or other magnetic screwdrivers and similar when you are working with circuit boards, laptop, other computer-y stuff. Data storage works by assigning polarity to a thing and magnets disturb that. This means that you can delete the data on a drive, be it solid state or 'conventional', by placing a magnet on it. Circuit boards can be very delicate also, and you can easily ruin the things by being clumsy with a magnet, also static electricity is not your friend when working with such things... which is really sucky, because having a magnet with those tiny screws would be so great ...
    This does not have to be a problem, but it can be and since tech can be stupid expensive, it would be really sad to ruin a thing because of that.

    • @stokhosursus
      @stokhosursus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, yes and no... A lot of drives are magnetically shielded up to a point; otherwise, you’d wipe your hard drive just by carrying your laptop in and out of some buildings with magnetic security gates. Since the screws are generally very tiny, it wouldn’t require a strong magnetic field to hold onto the screw. In fact, there are some computer repair kits that come with magnetized screwdrivers and such. Is it safer to avoid magnets completely around computers? Sure! However, if you know what you’re doing and are careful, you’ll be fine. 🙂

    With that steamer hack...you can also use a clothes iron and a wet cloth. Soak the cloth in water and place it on the wood where the dent is and then take your iron and go over the cloth+wood. It takes out dents pretty well and you wont need an actual steamer. I work in a cabinet factory and we do this all the time for damaged pieces. If the dent is deep enough it wont fully fix it but that's what using a wood crayon before you paint is for. Thanks for the video!

    An alternative to the last one with the line, is to cut the scrap in half, with a good 90-degree crosscut, then hold the two pieces together side-by-side, but with their ends slightly offset from each other. This allows you to easily nestle your drillbit into the vertical inside corner between the end grain of one piece and the side grain of the other. Easier to use than sighting a line, because the bit can actually touch the two vertical surfaces.
