Probably my favourite instrument, both for its unique timbre and for its versatility: it's both a perfect "harmony" instrument, and a sublime solo one.

Really enjoying this series! Very grateful to David and OT for producing it. As an aside, given David's pronunciation of cuivre, I now understand why he avoids attempting to pronounce sautille in the other videos. :D

Vienna horns won't go any lower, but modern double horns can - I've played a few pieces that go down to the (sounding) B flat (eg. Mahler Symphony 4), and one that sends a few players down to the A (Mahler Symphony 3)

A major force for horn music for TV and movies was the career of Vince Derosa (passed away in 2022) who had an extremely long career as a studio musician from 1935 to 2008. He was so good that composers were motivated to write more and more music that had the horn prominent. Most people have probably heard his playing more than any other instrumentalist. He played on scores of TV theme songs, movie scores, and a with very long list of about 100 singers and groups from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa. As a nice example later in his career, his was principle horn for James Horner's score for Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan. if you ever saw the movie The Days of Wine and Roses the beautiful horn solo was done by DeRosa. He was a "first call" horn player and especially for Henry Mancini.

David, thank you for this "love letter to the Horn". Who is this horn player? He's fantastic! Strange that he's playing an Alexander 103 French Horn when the classic "Hollywood Horn Sound" is Conn 8D.

A very good video. Something to note; the thing about players specializing in high or low horn is becoming more a thing of the past. It’s still a thing to an extent, but a good player typically has command of mostly the whole range. Some still will insist on the older convention, though. The thing about first / third and second / fourth still holds.
