I have the media book and I'm glad you think so highly of it. I saw it at an absolutely bargain price and couldn't help myself. Its those classic 80's & 90's movies that would be on late at night that you stumbled across and ended up staying up half the night for!

Someone told me that paramount are bringing out a standard release sometime this year. Finger crossed it comes with a slipcover. I can't believe that paramount would bring out a 35th anniversary edition of The Running Man and not put a single feature on it. As for the book 'The Running Man', I read it about 40 years ago and although it's the story of a television game show where there are runners and hunters, it's nothing at all like the film... which was directed by Starsky by the way (Paul Michael Glaser). I've never forgotten the book though so even though it's not brilliant, it is memorable. John.
Hey John. To be honest I think I probably should have stuck with my original 4K release because with the latest paramount edition you're getting nothing new with it whatsoever. It's a lovely looking Steelbook though. I had a feeling the book would be completely different to the movie. As a matter of fact I was just reading up about it and Stephen King is not a fan of the movie mainly because it's so drastically different to the book. Apparently there's a rumour going around that there is going to be a remake to The Running Man and Edgar Wright is supposed to be behind it. Maybe that will be a bit more faithful to the Bachman book.
@@millerman9991 I can remember the ending in the book when the hunters have caught up with him and he's a bit shot to pieces but still manages to control the plane he's flying to the destination he's aiming for. The description of his intestines getting caught around something as he drags them along is certainly memorable! Might make for an interesting film and if Edgar Wright gets the job then I'll be even more interested after Last Night In Soho. John.
It's weird but I'm trying to wrap my head around Edgar Wright doing The Running Man. A lot of his movies are are musically influenced and it would be very strange for him to do something similar with The Running Man. But I do have a lot of faith in him especially after seeing last night in Soho. Actually I don't think he's made a bad movie. Correction he had one bad movie with Scott Pilgrim.

You would think with it being a 35th anniversary edition it would be stacked with special features and bonus content, that is a let down. I'm a big fan of audio commentaries and it looked like the digi book has two so I'd definitely go for that one. You'll love the novel of the running man its completely different to the movie. It's a bit expensive to buy second hand but 'The Bachman Books' includes The Running Man and another great story called The Long Walk... They have been talking about turning the long walk into a film for a long time now but seems to be stuck in development hell or something.
Hey Laura. Unfortunately paramount are very lazy when it comes to their catalogue titles and this is another example of it. The German release has everything you could possibly want when it comes to The Running Man and I honestly think that's the version to get. I had a feeling the book was going to be very different to the movie itself because like I said in the video I could not imagine Stephen King writing that book. For the most part you're getting the same transfer but the good thing with the German edition is you get a 7.1 audio and it's loaded with features. Really, really nice looking Capelight German SteelBook Blu-ray. That release includes some nice Special Features not found on many other Blu-ray releases.
I'm starting to think that maybe I shouldn't have picked up the Paramount 4k release because it doesn't give me anything new. No special features and the 4k transfer is identical to the previous 4K release.

Nice one Keith, I had a sneeky feeling you would get the 4k steelbook at some point. I will stick with my superb German 4k media book, that book is excellent (I can read most of it) and there are loads of extras on the second blu ray. With very little difference in the video and audio I couldn't justify spending another £30 on a mediocre looking steelbook with just a 4k disc and no extra features at all. Hey Johny. The great thing about the German Media book when it comes to the art work is the 80s retro vibe that you get from it. I'm a big fan of that edition myself. When it comes to my favourite Arnold Schwarzenegger movie I think I would have to say predator. Having said that Commando wouldn't be a million miles from it either.

Hey Paul. As far as I'm concerned you have the best Editions when it comes to The Running Man. Very hard to recommend the Paramount release because it honestly doesn't give you anything that you don't have already. I checked out the UK Steelbook that you have and I have to admit I love the back art work on it and that's the only thing that's lacking with my edition. It's a fantastic follow-up to The Predator and I feel sometimes that maybe it got lost in its shadow. Thankfully it's appreciated today.
Thanks man for the comparisons! I note Amazon has a regular 4k penciled in for a Feb 13th release so I'll probably try and pick that up when it's discounted because I don't want to pay 30 quid for a vanilla release without any extras because they are taking the urine! I've just been over to Amazon Germany and found the Blu-ray+ DVD+ soundtrack and an extra blu Ray media book all in for about 20 quid delivered so snapped that up quickly! The 4K media book isn't available for a decent price, I think there's one for 50 quid but I passed on that. Thanks again for making us aware of the German media books👍🍺🍺🍺

Hey Keith - I guess its time to dig in and learn some German so that you can finally read the many German mediabook booklets that you have ;-) I can only imagine that the text talks about the massive censoring the film was subjected to in Germany - as was basically every Schwarzenegger movie in the 80s. The widely distributed FSK 16-version left almost all of the violence as well as most of the (admitedly pretty sadistic) one-liners on the cutting room floor. Around 8 min were cut. Still love that movie!
I had no idea that this movie was so massively cut in Germany. I don't know why I'm surprised because after seeing the Halloween 2 version that I have from Germany and how badly cut that was I shouldn't have been surprised to hear the Running man had something similar. As for the mediabook the good news is I can actually use Google Translate. So at least that's something. I really should take up some German though because my entire room has nothing but German editions in it. Hey James. The good news is I was able to get it quite cheap and I think that kind of helped when it came to picking it up. I was a bit hesitant because like I said in the video I thought the German Media book was amazing. Even though I feel the Paramount release doesn't give me anything new I'm still quite happy to have it. Great video Keith. Agreed, the BluRay steelbook looks the best. Really surprised the German version looks the best, especially for bonus features. Why they didn't put on the Paramount just seems crazy. Never read the book, but knowing Stephen King it would be mental, he did make Maximum Overdrive. If you're looking to get more mediabooks, recommend He Never Died, great film. Think you would enjoy it. Don't think you could beat the Nightmare On Elm Street set.

What's even more strange when it comes to the German release is the fact that it actually has the paramount logo on it so why the features didn't carry over onto the actual paramount release I will never fully understand. Hey Shaun. I completely forgot that he was Starsky and not only that but he actually directed a movie right after the Running man which I quite enjoyed called the Cutting Edge. It's a relatively unknown movie but I really did enjoy it. The Running Man would definitely be up there as one of my favourites Schwarzenegger movies even though it took me some time to enjoy it. It definitely wasn't love at first sight and it required a few viewings to fully appreciate it and now it's one of my go-to movies

I tried doing the same thing myself. Constantly saying I have the media book I don't need anything else and then all of a sudden appears on sale and I crumble.
It's not one of Arnold's best, personally I'd put it pretty low down on a list of his films, better than the 6th Day and Eraser but not by much. Think too that Paul Michael Glazer was the wrong choice for director, Arnold said that he shot it like a TV show.
Do you not think the fact that the director shot it like a TV show added something to it seeming it is based on a TV show. I don't know maybe I'm wrong. I think this was the follow-up to predator and you can clearly see there is a downgrade in performance from Arnold Schwarzenegger. I do enjoy the movie though but it'll never be one of my favorites
Hey Keith I agree the mediabook looks great and I suppose red and black is always a winner. I think when I got the paramount version it was quite cheap for a 4k steelbook and now we know why that was. I suppose there's good and bad there. I think German versions often put in more effort with sound, if you remember pitch black German 4k vs the arrow one, German one had dolby atmos and arrow was 5.1.
You know me Steve red and black is always a winner. I ended up picking up that paramount release quite cheap myself. I think i got it on Black Friday for around €22. But honestly I think I should have stuck with my 4K mediabook because you're getting nothing new when it comes to the actual paramount release other than a beautiful looking Steelbook. I suppose that's more than enough reason to warrant the €22. Germans are massively into there audio. Just check out there releases of daylight and twister both of which have Dolby Atmos soundtracks. Why the heck is the new version 5.1 vs the old one being 7.1? I just watched the 5.1 version today and found your video. I don't get why they wouldn't do the back audio or the bonus features. What a waste. I wish I could grab the german one.
I honestly do not know why the recent 4K release didn't get a 7.1. I'm almost certain that a German company done the remaster for the other version while paramount done the recent one and that probably explains why the 7.1 is not on it. I'm not sure if you can still get the German version but I would go over to Amazon Germany and see. I don't think the mediabook that I have in this video is available but I'm almost certain there will be a standard release.

I loved the German Steel and picked that up. The Uk was similar, without the PET sleeve and slight variation to the art, but similar. The German steel is by far my favorite edition.
I was just checking out pictures for the English Steelbook and I have to admit I do love the artwork on the back of it. I'm actually half tempted to pick it up.
@@millerman9991 yea, I picked it up back when it was released. The back is great. And even though the front is so similar, it is different enough, with color palette, that I feel it makes a nice companion piece. I am passing on the 4K.
hi keith, thanks for the info on the paramount release… i first got the german steelbook because i also love the artwork on it… and then bought the german 4k update disc which capelight sells for 12€ in a paperbag… and put that 4k disc into the steelbook… i love the 7.1 „lionsgate“ mix… which is on the german release… it’s surprisingly intense… i think the only way paramount could have topped this would be by providing an atmos-upgrade… which unfortunately has become less and less common for paramount and seems to be pretty random concerning the selection of titles which include it…

Remember watching this back in the day on video it was a let down when I was younger after what we got with Predator however it is alot of fun and I appreciated it more in my later teens I would put it with Commando in my Arnie movie list. Great vid mate

I was actually going to mention that in the video when they first go into the game and how amazing it actually sounds. I actually thought the scene at the start of the movie with the helicopters was amazing as well. The helicopters were belting out of every single speaker
I have the new English Paramount edition. It confuses me in comparison to the other two. It's the newest one, so why doesn't it have a 7.1 track like the Mediabook? Do you know which company distributed the German one? And why does it state "for the first time on 4k". Very strange... I like the artwork from the new Paramount steelbook the most between the two 4K's. The color scheme reflects the style of the movie more. I don't find the mediabook catching the vibe of the movie with the black tone. It almost looks like a Predator cover. In your comparison I like the visual art of the Paramount release the most. Like you noticed. The skins look too red on the mediabook and I notice more lack of details. And than the extra 's. I don't get the Paramount release at all. Such a beautiful edition, but stripped from everything. While the extra' s are made and on other editions. It was a bummer when I popped the movie in and found out that there was not an special feature on the whole disc. Nice to see these kind of comparisons. I have a German Mediabook in this style for Everything Everywhere all at Once. I love the idea. Too bad only the Germans do these kind of releases. The exact same thing happened to myself when I bought escape from l.a. When I knocked it on I couldn't believe that there was not a single feature on it and paramount are famous for that at the moment. As for the transfers themselves I stand by what I said there is little to no difference for the most part. But every now and again you will see subtle differences. So when it comes to picture quality I think it's a win-win with either release. It's just a shame Paramount didn't put more effort into theirs. Just like yourself Carlos I'm trying to cut back on the amount of movies that I double dip or triple dip on. Unfortunately when it came to the Steelbook edition my curiosity got the better of me and when you look at everything that you get with it maybe I should have left it alone. The Steelbook does look fantastic but the 4K transfer is the exact same and you don't get a single extra on it. It's a shame seeming it's a anniversary edition. You think paramount would do a bit more. But I completely understand where you're coming from as well because Arnold is probably one of my favourite actors as well and I regard the Running Man as one of my favourites from him.
Talking about German mediabooks Keith I can tell you that Carrie (1976) is going to be released as a 4K mediabook by Capelight Pictures very soon. I'll let you know when pre orders are up.

Some stellar editions you've got there Keith. The Blu-ray steelbook is probably my favourite out of those three in terms of art, but the German mediabook is probably the best edition overall. There was a massive rumour going around that we were going to get a 4K release of Twister this year. I'm very intrigued to see what they're going to do with the sequel but it is going to be a huge shame that Bill Paxton won't be in it. What a wonderful actor he is and he's sadly missed

I remember predator looking very decent on 4k. I can't remember Total Recall funny enough. I think you're right though because I can't imagine either of them looking better than The Running Man. It does look that good
Funny enough I just got my two editions through the door myself. Unfortunately they sent me the wrong Halloween Steelbook. I wanted the orange one but they sent me the blue. But the good news is they told me to keep the blue one and they're fully refunded my money. So I got it for free

If a 4K has Dolby Vision it will also have HDR. It wouldn't make sense to leave out HDR because the market share of customers with Dolby Vision capable displays isn't big enough.
@@moomcmoosson1992 What I mean is are they both on the same film at the same time because they’re both High dynamic range systems or do you choose in the options menu with what one you want ?
@@WhiteSilverback It depends on what your Player is set to. Some players you can set to automatically recognize HDR or Dolby Vision. Like Panasonic players. You set them to Dolby Vision. If the disc doesn't have DV the player will go into HDR mode. Some players you have to set manually to HDR or Dolby Vision (Sony for instance) which can suck, because it isn't made clear on every 4K release wether it comes with just HDR or also Dolby Vision.
I own the German Mediabook and I've completely given up buying multiple of the same thing, it's pathetic they keep releasing the same old movies over and over with different badges and post cards and hair clips included to brainwash us into spending money and 9 times out of 10 your probably best sticking with the Original Dvd release for the Original sound mix, Before everyone jumps on me giving it yeah you don't get Atmos or Dts x or 4k image quality, I ain't bothered with it I don't think old movies with object based audio go well together in my opinion, Give me Dolby Stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1 Movies any day, No blown up pictures with enhanced colour and fake film grain, Don't get me wrong new movie releases with all this are excellent as they suit them and it's the original sound mix and colour timing, Let's stop changing history
To be honest I probably should have stuck with my 4K German Media book because I'm getting nothing new when it comes to paramount release other than a very nice looking Steelbook. I completely understand everything you're saying Dave but I have to respectfully disagree. I find that if a movie is done right when it comes to a 4K transfer it can almost feel like I'm watching the movie for the first time again and what a gift that is.Dolby Atmos or DTS x do give a great sense of atmosphere that a 5.1 audio just can't deliver. Having said that it's not a deal breaker when it comes to me picking up 4K editions. I could easily live without it if I'm completely honest.

No I completely understand what you're saying and like I said Atmos and dts-x are not essential when it comes to me. I have a fantastic sound system and regardless of what I'm playing on it for the most part it sounds amazing. I do think though when you see movies like the Karate Kid getting Dolby Atmos I found it to be a bit overkill when it comes to sound
I'm still trying to figure out why I picked it up myself. The 4K Media book is better in every way. Better special features the sound is better. Maybe I was curious to see if the picture quality was going to be better on the Paramount release

Someone told me that paramount are bringing out a standard release sometime this year. Finger crossed it comes with a slipcover. I can't believe that paramount would bring out a 35th anniversary edition of The Running Man and not put a single feature on it. Excellent video Keith. The perfect comparison for anyone thinking about making this purchase. As for the book 'The Running Man', I read it about 40 years ago and although it's the story of a television game show where there are runners and hunters, it's nothing at all like the film... which was directed by Starsky by the way (Paul Michael Glaser). I've never forgotten the book though so even though it's not brilliant, it is memorable.

Hey John. To be honest I think I probably should have stuck with my original 4K release because with the latest paramount edition you're getting nothing new with it whatsoever. It's a lovely looking Steelbook though. I had a feeling the book would be completely different to the movie. As a matter of fact I was just reading up about it and Stephen King is not a fan of the movie mainly because it's so drastically different to the book. Apparently there's a rumour going around that there is going to be a remake to The Running Man and Edgar Wright is supposed to be behind it. Maybe that will be a bit more faithful to the Bachman book.
@@millerman9991 I can remember the ending in the book when the hunters have caught up with him and he's a bit shot to pieces but still manages to control the plane he's flying to the destination he's aiming for. The description of his intestines getting caught around something as he drags them along is certainly memorable! Might make for an interesting film and if Edgar Wright gets the job then I'll be even more interested after Last Night In Soho. John.
It's weird but I'm trying to wrap my head around Edgar Wright doing The Running Man. A lot of his movies are are musically influenced and it would be very strange for him to do something similar with The Running Man. But I do have a lot of faith in him especially after seeing last night in Soho. Actually I don't think he's made a bad movie. Correction he had one bad movie with Scott Pilgrim.

You would think with it being a 35th anniversary edition it would be stacked with special features and bonus content, that is a let down. I'm a big fan of audio commentaries and it looked like the digi book has two so I'd definitely go for that one. You'll love the novel of the running man its completely different to the movie. It's a bit expensive to buy second hand but 'The Bachman Books' includes The Running Man and another great story called The Long Walk... They have been talking about turning the long walk into a film for a long time now but seems to be stuck in development hell or something.
Hey Laura. Unfortunately paramount are very lazy when it comes to their catalogue titles and this is another example of it. The German release has everything you could possibly want when it comes to The Running Man and I honestly think that's the version to get. I had a feeling the book was going to be very different to the movie itself because like I said in the video I could not imagine Stephen King writing that book. For the most part you're getting the same transfer but the good thing with the German edition is you get a 7.1 audio and it's loaded with features. Really, really nice looking Capelight German SteelBook Blu-ray. That release includes some nice Special Features not found on many other Blu-ray releases.
I'm starting to think that maybe I shouldn't have picked up the Paramount 4k release because it doesn't give me anything new. No special features and the 4k transfer is identical to the previous 4K release.

I will stick with my superb German 4k media book, that book is excellent (I can read most of it) and there are loads of extras on the second blu ray. With very little difference in the video and audio I couldn't justify spending another £30 on a mediocre looking steelbook with just a 4k disc and no extra features at all. Hey Paul. As far as I'm concerned you have the best Editions when it comes to The Running Man. Very hard to recommend the Paramount release because it honestly doesn't give you anything that you don't have already. I checked out the UK Steelbook that you have and I have to admit I love the back art work on it and that's the only thing that's lacking with my edition. It's a fantastic follow-up to The Predator and I feel sometimes that maybe it got lost in its shadow. Thankfully it's appreciated today.
Thanks man for the comparisons! I note Amazon has a regular 4k penciled in for a Feb 13th release so I'll probably try and pick that up when it's discounted because I don't want to pay 30 quid for a vanilla release without any extras because they are taking the urine! I've just been over to Amazon Germany and found the Blu-ray+ DVD+ soundtrack and an extra blu Ray media book all in for about 20 quid delivered so snapped that up quickly! The 4K media book isn't available for a decent price, I think there's one for 50 quid but I passed on that. Thanks again for making us aware of the German media books👍🍺🍺🍺

Hey Keith - I guess its time to dig in and learn some German so that you can finally read the many German mediabook booklets that you have ;-) I can only imagine that the text talks about the massive censoring the film was subjected to in Germany - as was basically every Schwarzenegger movie in the 80s. The widely distributed FSK 16-version left almost all of the violence as well as most of the (admitedly pretty sadistic) one-liners on the cutting room floor. Around 8 min were cut. Still love that movie!
I had no idea that this movie was so massively cut in Germany. I don't know why I'm surprised because after seeing the Halloween 2 version that I have from Germany and how badly cut that was I shouldn't have been surprised to hear the Running man had something similar. As for the mediabook the good news is I can actually use Google Translate. So at least that's something. I really should take up some German though because my entire room has nothing but German editions in it. I was a bit hesitant because like I said in the video I thought the German Media book was amazing. Even though I feel the Paramount release doesn't give me anything new I'm still quite happy to have it. Great video Keith. Agreed, the BluRay steelbook looks the best. Really surprised the German version looks the best, especially for bonus features. Why they didn't put on the Paramount just seems crazy. Never read the book, but knowing Stephen King it would be mental, he did make Maximum Overdrive. If you're looking to get more mediabooks, recommend He Never Died, great film. Think you would enjoy it. Don't think you could beat the Nightmare On Elm Street set.

What's even more strange when it comes to the German release is the fact that it actually has the paramount logo on it so why the features didn't carry over onto the actual paramount release I will never fully understand. Hey Shaun. I completely forgot that he was Starsky and not only that but he actually directed a movie right after the Running man which I quite enjoyed called the Cutting Edge. It's a relatively unknown movie but I really did enjoy it. The Running Man would definitely be up there as one of my favourites Schwarzenegger movies even though it took me some time to enjoy it. It definitely wasn't love at first sight and it required a few viewings to fully appreciate it and now it's one of my go-to movies

It's not one of Arnold's best, personally I'd put it pretty low down on a list of his films, better than the 6th Day and Eraser but not by much. Think too that Paul Michael Glazer was the wrong choice for director, Arnold said that he shot it like a TV show.
Do you not think the fact that the director shot it like a TV show added something to it seeming it is based on a TV show. I don't know maybe I'm wrong. I think this was the follow-up to predator and you can clearly see there is a downgrade in performance from Arnold Schwarzenegger. I do enjoy the movie though but it'll never be one of my favorites
Hey Keith I agree the mediabook looks great and I suppose red and black is always a winner. I think when I got the paramount version it was quite cheap for a 4k steelbook and now we know why that was. I suppose there's good and bad there. I think German versions often put in more effort with sound, if you remember pitch black German 4k vs the arrow one, German one had dolby atmos and arrow was 5.1.
You know me Steve red and black is always a winner. I ended up picking up that paramount release quite cheap myself. I think i got it on Black Friday for around €22. But honestly I think I should have stuck with my 4K mediabook because you're getting nothing new when it comes to the actual paramount release other than a beautiful looking Steelbook. I suppose that's more than enough reason to warrant the €22. Germans are massively into there audio. Just check out there releases of daylight and twister both of which have Dolby Atmos soundtracks. I think the Paramount release is three played 100GB Disc compared to the German release which is two layer 66GB. GREAT REVIEW.

Why the heck is the new version 5.1 vs the old one being 7.1? I just watched the 5.1 version today and found your video. I don't get why they wouldn't do the back audio or the bonus features. What a waste. I wish I could grab the german one.
I honestly do not know why the recent 4K release didn't get a 7.1. I'm almost certain that a German company done the remaster for the other version while paramount done the recent one and that probably explains why the 7.1 is not on it. I'm not sure if you can still get the German version but I would go over to Amazon Germany and see. I don't think the mediabook that I have in this video is available but I'm almost certain there will be a standard release.

Yeah I heard that Edgar Wright is going to have something to do with it. I'm sure it will be a more faithful adaptation of the book
I loved the German Steel and picked that up. The Uk was similar, without the PET sleeve and slight variation to the art, but similar. The German steel is by far my favorite edition.
I was just checking out pictures for the English Steelbook and I have to admit I do love the artwork on the back of it. I'm actually half tempted to pick it up.
@@millerman9991 yea, I picked it up back when it was released. The back is great. And even though the front is so similar, it is different enough, with color palette, that I feel it makes a nice companion piece. I am passing on the 4K.

i first got the german steelbook because i also love the artwork on it… and then bought the german 4k update disc which capelight sells for 12€ in a paperbag… and put that 4k disc into the steelbook…
i love the 7.1 „lionsgate“ mix… which is on the german release… it’s surprisingly intense… i think the only way paramount could have topped this would be by providing an atmos-upgrade…
which unfortunately has become less and less common for paramount and seems to be pretty random concerning the selection of titles which include it…
Wow that is actually quite brilliant what you done. You now own the definitive version of The Running Man. I honestly don't know what Paramount were doing with this release because it's a 35th anniversary edition and surely they should have put some features on to it. But as you pointed out Paramount are getting very lazy when it comes to physical media and the lack of an Atmos soundtrack is another example of it. I was actually happy to hear that kino lorber is prepping a 4k disc for Face/Off which is another paramount title (in the US at least… disney in europe which is even worse)
so no dnr and probably a quality release… looking forward to that one…
Face Off is my favourite John Woo movie and I honestly cannot wait to see that movie in 4k. Kino lorber are very reliable when it comes to their 4K transfers and I'm sure they will do something quite brilliant with this one. Fingers crossed

Remember watching this back in the day on video it was a let down when I was younger after what we got with Predator however it is alot of fun and I appreciated it more in my later teens I would put it with Commando in my Arnie movie list. Great vid mate

Keith does the German 4k 7.1 audio downgrade to 5.1 when changing the language to English? If so, than it won’t really improve Paramount’s audio?
No the 7.1is for the English only. It's actually 5.1 for the German language for some strange reason.
And it's pretty intense and loud track as well through a sound system especially the scene where they are first launched into the game through the tubes
I was actually going to mention that in the video when they first go into the game and how amazing it actually sounds. I actually thought the scene at the start of the movie with the helicopters was amazing as well. The helicopters were belting out of every single speaker
I have the new English Paramount edition. It confuses me in comparison to the other two. It's the newest one, so why doesn't it have a 7.1 track like the Mediabook? Do you know which company distributed the German one? And why does it state "for the first time on 4k". Very strange...
I like the artwork from the new Paramount steelbook the most between the two 4K's. The color scheme reflects the style of the movie more. I don't find the mediabook catching the vibe of the movie with the black tone. It almost looks like a Predator cover.
In your comparison I like the visual art of the Paramount release the most. Like you noticed. The skins look too red on the mediabook and I notice more lack of details.
And than the extra 's. I don't get the Paramount release at all. Such a beautiful edition, but stripped from everything. While the extra' s are made and on other editions. It was a bummer when I popped the movie in and found out that there was not an special feature on the whole disc.
Nice to see these kind of comparisons. I have a German Mediabook in this style for Everything Everywhere all at Once. I love the idea. Too bad only the Germans do these kind of releases. But luckily I can read it a little bit as a Dutchie.

Hey Robert. I tell you what even more strange is the fact that paramounts logo is actually on the German release but I don't know who done the restoration for it. I need to look into it a bit more and see.
Unfortunately this is another case of paramount being very lazy when it comes to physical Media. No 7.1 DTS and not one single feature on there release. The exact same thing happened to myself when I bought escape from l.a. When I knocked it on I couldn't believe that there was not a single feature on it and paramount are famous for that at the moment.
As for the transfers themselves I stand by what I said there is little to no difference for the most part. But every now and again you will see subtle differences. So when it comes to picture quality I think it's a win-win with either release. It's just a shame Paramount didn't put more effort into theirs. Oh yeah. I also have the Color out of Space mediabook! It's a big one haha. But it's just a tiny thing in comparison to your Big ass Color out of space edition!
That edition of the colour out of space still surprises me. Honestly I had no idea it was that big. It's probably the most surprised I've ever been when it comes to an edition and it's also a great movie
the 7.1 mix was done by lionsgate for the first blu ray release in the US… capelight (the german distributor) bought it but paramount did not…
Nice comparison video Keith 👍 . I have the 4k German mediabook and the UK Blu-Ray Steelbook with the pins in with a German slipcover I picked up on ebay. The 4k looks great heavy on grain but to be expected. It great all round package and agree the best release!
You know yourself Matt if you removed any of the grain from this movie I really would lose something. It's easily the best the movie has ever looked and I'm very happy with it. Awesome that you"ve done this video as i have the blu ray steelbook & the German 4K media book like yourself, & for a few months now i"ve been toying with getting this Zavvi 4K steelbook of "The Running man" & i hate to say this but i"ve been trying to cut down the many editions of a movie, but i can"t let one of the previous editions go, as Arnie is my 2nd fav actor & this movie.
The extras might win it for me so i"ll keep the German media book, even though i do like this new steelbook, thanks for sharing Keith. Such fond memories of watching this one at the cinema, "I"LL BE BACK"
Just like yourself Carlos I'm trying to cut back on the amount of movies that I double dip or triple dip on. Unfortunately when it came to the Steelbook edition my curiosity got the better of me and when you look at everything that you get with it maybe I should have left it alone. The Steelbook does look fantastic but the 4K transfer is the exact same and you don't get a single extra on it. It's a shame seeming it's a anniversary edition. You think paramount would do a bit more. But I completely understand where you're coming from as well because Arnold is probably one of my favourite actors as well and I regard the Running Man as one of my favourites from him.
Talking about German mediabooks Keith I can tell you that Carrie (1976) is going to be released as a 4K mediabook by Capelight Pictures very soon. I'll let you know when pre orders are up.

I’m not sure if I like slips on steelbooks,they can leave fine scratches.
To be honest I think I prefer the clear slips more than a straightforward slipcover.

I just checked it out and there's nothing there. I never had any issues when it comes to slipcovers and scratches

Some stellar editions you've got there Keith. The Blu-ray steelbook is probably my favourite out of those three in terms of art, but the German mediabook is probably the best edition overall. I only have a region 1 Special Edition DVD of Running Man so I might have to upgrade at some point. Great video Keith.

It is a beautiful steelbook it has to be said but I wish there was more to it. The German Media book is a beautiful release and if you can pick it up I recommend doing so. Twister 2 has a current release date of July 19th 2024 in cinemas. Wouldn’t surprise me if Twister finally gets a 4K UHD Blu-ray release around that time if it not before…
There was a massive rumour going around that we were going to get a 4K release of Twister this year. I'm very intrigued to see what they're going to do with the sequel but it is going to be a huge shame that Bill Paxton won't be in it. What a wonderful actor he is and he's sadly missed

Ironic that running man would end up looking better than predator and total recall on 4k. But makes sense .
I remember predator looking very decent on 4k. I can't remember Total Recall funny enough. I think you're right though because I can't imagine either of them looking better than The Running Man. It does look that good

Funny enough I just got my two editions through the door myself. Unfortunately they sent me the wrong Halloween Steelbook. I wanted the orange one but they sent me the blue. But the good news is they told me to keep the blue one and they're fully refunded my money. So I got it for free

The Paramount version has both Dolby Vision and HDR10
I know The German Mediabook has Dolby Vision but does it also have HDR10 like the paramount ?
Yes the German Media book also comes with hdr10. Well covered when it comes to the media book
If a 4K has Dolby Vision it will also have HDR. It wouldn't make sense to leave out HDR because the market share of customers with Dolby Vision capable displays isn't big enough.
@@moomcmoosson1992 What I mean is are they both on the same film at the same time because they’re both High dynamic range systems or do you choose in the options menu with what one you want ?
@@WhiteSilverback It depends on what your Player is set to. Some players you can set to automatically recognize HDR or Dolby Vision. Like Panasonic players. You set them to Dolby Vision. If the disc doesn't have DV the player will go into HDR mode. Some players you have to set manually to HDR or Dolby Vision (Sony for instance) which can suck, because it isn't made clear on every 4K release wether it comes with just HDR or also Dolby Vision.

I own the German Mediabook and I've completely given up buying multiple of the same thing, it's pathetic they keep releasing the same old movies over and over with different badges and post cards and hair clips included to brainwash us into spending money and 9 times out of 10 your probably best sticking with the Original Dvd release for the Original sound mix, Before everyone jumps on me giving it yeah you don't get Atmos or Dts x or 4k image quality, I ain't bothered with it I don't think old movies with object based audio go well together in my opinion, Give me Dolby Stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1 Movies any day, No blown up pictures with enhanced colour and fake film grain, Don't get me wrong new movie releases with all this are excellent as they suit them and it's the original sound mix and colour timing, Let's stop changing history
To be honest I probably should have stuck with my 4K German Media book because I'm getting nothing new when it comes to paramount release other than a very nice looking Steelbook. I completely understand everything you're saying Dave but I have to respectfully disagree. I find that if a movie is done right when it comes to a 4K transfer it can almost feel like I'm watching the movie for the first time again and what a gift that is.Dolby Atmos or DTS x do give a great sense of atmosphere that a 5.1 audio just can't deliver. Having said that it's not a deal breaker when it comes to me picking up 4K editions. I could easily live without it if I'm completely honest.
@@millerman9991 fair enough mate were all different mate and the German Mediabook is brilliant quality with 4k and all special features, My only gripe these days with Atmos and DTS X being put on old releases is I think it's becoming gimmicky for sales and not doing all these classic 80s films Justice, Some just need leaving alone imo opinion, Great uploads pal good watch
No I completely understand what you're saying and like I said Atmos and dts-x are not essential when it comes to me. I have a fantastic sound system and regardless of what I'm playing on it for the most part it sounds amazing. I do think though when you see movies like the Karate Kid getting Dolby Atmos I found it to be a bit overkill when it comes to sound
This was why i didn't buy the 4k steelbook its looks bad and boring artwork
I'm still trying to figure out why I picked it up myself. The 4K Media book is better in every way. Better special features the sound is better. Maybe I was curious to see if the picture quality was going to be better on the Paramount release
