    I think this would be great on a TLDR Extras channel, I love you guys doing stuff like this, just is a bit odd content-wise when you compare to the rest of the channel. It's great to see more of the personality come through! (it's what I like about the Nebula extras / podcasts / etc).

      I agree. This is kinda fun. I have fun watching Jack spiral into disproporitonal emotion and hyperbole on stuff that doesn't really matter! 😅
      But this is sold and marketed as an explainer chanel on business topics and there was no 'explanation' here. This had no research, no data backing. This was "M&M stores and corporate touristy places annoy me in my home town and I want to yell about it for a bit!' 😋

      TLDR Business has always been a little chaotic. I couldn't tell at first if there were angling for longer more investigative videos on this new channel or more shitposty ones. They seem to be doing both, and seeing what sticks.

  • @timsplosion
    @timsplosion ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This video was super fun - I do worry that more content like this about more contentious brands might impact TLDR's neutral brand long term. I think this video is only as fun as it is because "Times Square sucks" and "the M&Ms store sucks" are kinda silly things to get riled up about, which makes it funny to watch. Not sure if it's news, but it's fun!

    • @Raigius
      @Raigius ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah this is fun as a random one off outlier. But if this sorta content becomes normalized it could damage their reputation as an impartial facts based perspective on the world.
      I suspect their testing how much engagement and views this style of video generates with the TH-cam algorithm. And yeah I'm hoping the results aren't so significantly overwhelming that it changes the course of this brand in the long run....

    @rmsgrey ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Doing some quick maths with the Nebula offers, for $2.50 per month to be better value than $300 for the remainder of your mutual existence, that puts a limit on the duration of that mutual existence.
    If you assume that the choice is between paying $300 to Nebula today, or setting aside $300 somewhere where it won't earn any interest (for example, under the mattress) and paying $2.50 of it per month to Nebula, then the mattress will run out of money after a decade.
    If you take account of inflation (assuming the average 5.2% annual inflation of the last 60 years is a good prediction of the next couple of decades) then you're looking at about 14 years to break-even on a lifetime membership. That's still well within the expected future life-expectancy of most people (the average adult has a future life expectancy of over 25 years).
    It gets more complicated if you take account of the opportunity cost of spending $300 as a lump sum - depending what your disposable income looks like, that could put a dent in your finances for quite some time (or it could just mean waiting another month to buy some other luxury, or skipping a particular indulgence once). Still, if you can afford to spend $300 at less than a month's notice, you're unlikely to add more than a year or two to the break-even point.
    All of which suggests that Nebula doesn't expect to last more than 10-15 years. Should we be worried?

    I love TLDR and watch a great deal of their videos. I also love the M&M Store in Time Square and visit it every time I am there. With their offer of free shipping on purchases $250 and above, I load up on presents for my family and friends, and M&M ships them to my home in Florida for free. As far as their locations, they are tourist driven because that's where the people are who would be willing to buy their products. Hershey's has a store across the street and Disney is just a few blocks away.

    Whaaaat?!? Time Square is called Time Square bc of the NYT!!!? That's a chicken or the egg story I would not have believed! Cray. And who knew I would learn that from a Brit video. And super interesting about the seedy period. I always wondered about that. My parents always said it was pretty dangerous along with Central Park into the 90s.
    I was recently told that until not long at all before I moved to London in 2011, places like King's Cross were super dodgy. Now its super clean. Soho were leicester square still has seedy aspects, with cat houses, dodgy casinos and dodgy looking bars/front businesses/bouncers but overall very vanilla-ised. Camden and Whitechapel also very gentrified and so tame their practically sterile now. Always wondered how that kind of process happens so quick that the next gen knows the neighbourhood in a totally different light.
    Super interesting vid. I guess that just goes to show depressingly that for us all to share spaces and feel safe together, we to sterilise things til they lose all character and meaning. Not unlike most box office movies these days which are more popular than ever but so generic and meaningless its painful.
    On that wonderful note, Greggs is pure trash by the way. Toodaloo ;)

    Holy cow, what is this video? Jack spends a good chunk of his time talking about how much he and everyone else at least should, think that something sucks; then the last half is just a tacked on monologue from some TH-camr who has apparently never considered writing their dialogue, just count how many times he says 'like' - as though he never made it out of middle school.

    We have smarties in Canada and I prefer them to m&m 😛 I love time square, i've spent quite a lot of time there; it's great for photos and there's always some crazy stuff going on! 😄I've never been in the m&m store, I'd rather spend time in the Brooklyn transit museum 🙂

    Midnight Cowboy was directed by John Schlesinger. Otherwise, great video!

    Orange M’n’M: Neurotic and paranoid. Can’t leave the house without panicking.
    Sounds a lot like another orange one these days.

    If you had a drinking game for everytime that guy says "like" you'd die from alcohol poisoning.

    This video is literally a combination of Tucker Carlson/Alex Jones style journalism (born out of meaningless and unnecessary frustration) and an out-of-season April Fools joke.
    It is an abosule shame for the TLDR channel, whom I have deep respect and appreciation for in tackling, covering and reporting news and topics that most other news outlets aren't aware of or are just afraid to do so, to be doing such an abhorent video like this and in this way.

    I didn't even notice M&M World during my brief time in Times Square; I went to the Nintendo Store and the Yankees Store and then dipped out because I had other stuff to do.
    This was, despite being kind of informed by a desperate rant, quite informative about how Times Square became the capitalist shrine/hellhole that it is today.
