    Client mode also works as a router, router should be used for nodes with the best antenna and height above terrain.

      @adavies6696 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We need to emphasise router/repeater/router_client should be extremely limited in the network to edge nodes in advantageous positions. Too many are choosing router_client, and its limiting the distance and the communication in the mesh

    I have two Lilygo SX1262 LoRa modules I accidentally bought back in the day to test the Helium Network. Later on, I found out that Helium did not support SX1262, and I also gave up on Helium. Just got curious about Meshtastic, and thanks to your video, I turned them both into Meshtastic smartphone modules, in half an hour (finding the right firmware, researching other modules, realizing mine were ok for the job, flashing, etc.), for my Android phone. Thank you very much!

    Great. Today I started with the same device. Very easy config. The board has battery and solar connectors and it is my next step :)

      Yeah, I'm going to do another video that goes into a more in-depth build. I want to build a solar repeater too.

    Really enjoyed video and this simple approach. Love the idea of meshtastic but I'm waiting for the hardware to continue to mature but I love the way it's going

    Default pin for screenless devices is 123456. Recently some wisblocks have been shipped with it set to random pin. RAK is working on fixing this - they're copying a preconfigured firmware instead of unconfigured.

    • @Atlavox
      @Atlavox  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I guess I got some of the ones with random pin set as default. Definitely would be more convenient if it was just set to fixed. Thanks for the heads up

    • @kaoticrecoil2
      @kaoticrecoil2 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Same. Luckily I ordered an oled. You can put the oled in the pin holes and shove your finger in between to hold tension and it'll display the pairing code...lol. I only had one oled and multiple boards, this worked with each.

      Remember folks, you can always connect it via USB to your pc and reflash. I always do with new boards, as the firmware is always out of date

    Great presentation to start with meshtastic. However I would highly advise not to use that long cable (10:10) from your Rockland kit. Instead mount your node right bellow your antenna with a very short cable (rockland sells these) in a waterproof box or you gonna have quite a bit of loss in that cable. The LoRa nodes are very low power to begin with. Don’t waster your precious power in the coax. If you buy a power meter and measure on the exit of your node and then measure at the end of that coax you will see what I am talking about. My 2c.

    Great videos. As a complete beginner which device would you recommend to get? Thinking either the Lilygo T-Beam (I would need a case though which are hard to come by here in Germany), the Wisblock (same problem with the case) or the Heltec V3 which you can order with a case. Can’t really decide…

    When you send messages from your phone does someone else have to be connected to that node or a different one? How does that work exactly?

    Sorry to be a dummy, but what battery fits the battery terminals on the board and fits comfortably inside the 3D printed case, which is pretty cool!

    Good luck finding anyone out there close enough to talk to 😂 we need another 10k people setting up nodes. They need to fix the software to make messaging actually work too.

      I'm more interested in getting a network set up among my existing friends and family, instead of texting random people who happen to have radios. Although I lucked out and found someone right down the street from me who I picked up and made a new friend.

      My focus too is to get trusted neighbors into this and establish communications in power down scenarios. We are in Hawaii (Big Island rural) and power outages happen several times each year. Big storms can bring in bigger down times. So this can be a potential solution for us here. Most of us have small solar generators and/or gas/diesel generators for critical home power. But internet phones typically die within the first hour of a long outage. And we have older family (Kupuna) we need to keep an eye on or help when these things happen.

    this is actually MORE work to get going than a Heltec V3. only because it's BT antenna is onboard. The V3 has a screen and GPIO pins. Screen means we can connect to BT from a phone without a computer at all.

  • @jordandegraaff

    So unless you get the battery, it needs to be powered?

    • @Atlavox
      @Atlavox  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's correct. You'd need USB power if you don't have a battery, Keep in mind, it draws so little power that most power bricks will shut off because it thinks nothing is plugged in. Keep any eye out for that

    If we have to use the internet and chrome to setup the device isn’t that defeating the purpose of having off grid gear for comms?
